A trip to helter skelter and back

If you are at all interested in Manson or even LA crime history, you don't want to miss this tour. We did this tour right before we left LA. We all agreed it was the highlight of our trip. After reading about this case for all these years, we wanted to see the spots where all of it went down. The tour takes you along the route the killers followed and even by locations that pertain to the whole scene, for instance the site of Jay Sebring's hair salon, the spot where Manson hit the ground after being thrown out of the Whiskey, and homes where the Family creepy crawled. There's a screen on the air conditioned bus which shows photos from the original crime scene and of the locales as they looked in the 60s. I've got to tell you I felt a chill go down my spine when we pulled up in front of the LaBianca house and when we made the turn onto Cielo Dr which winds up the hill to the Tate house. Scott was our guide and he encourages interaction among the group and the tour is kept small enough at 12 or 13 people to do that. He also wisely limits this tour to only Manson related sites. It isn't a celebrity homes or architecture tour. The tour bus moves effortlessly and seamlessly between all the sites. This is not a tour which could be offered at your average Hollywood sight seeing outfit. It takes more than a passing interest in the subject . Scott & co. get it.

Really informative and interesting tour

This tour is really informative and filled with good insights on the Manson murders and the Hollywood connections surrounding Charles and the case. My only qualm would be is there should be a sign to turn off phones or to ask the group before hand not to use them. The driver asked the girl in the front who was taking notes on her phone to put it away because it was distracting him and made it seem like he was boring and I'm sure that was embarrassing for her, while later on the tour a guy in the back answered a phone call and the driver just let him take the call! Other than the confusion regarding phone etiquette the tour was really great and informative.

Awesome tour. Got a lot of information. The only thing I wish was if we could get out of the car and take photos. He has an awesome museum back at the shop so thats definitely worth checking out. Really weird to be right in front of all these famous sites. Its really cool to see the houses now and think back to the photos taken back in 69.' Glad they have a tour like this. Definetely recommend it.

Helter Skelter Tour

I took the Tragic History tour from DD last year and really enjoyed it. I was hoping that the Helter Skelter tour would be as good. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this tour for anyone who has just a casual interest in the topic. The tour guide is knowledgeable and obviously passionate about this subject but some of the sites pointed out are just inconsequential (or irrelevant) to the overall story. The tour is long, around 4 hours, and in my opinion should be cut down to a more manageable time. If you have read everything about the Manson family and are really interested in seeing everything then this is the tour for you. If you are just a little curious, take the other tour - it's way more interesting.

I wasn't able to make the original tour. Scott at Deadly Departed Tours responded to an email I sent and said I could reschedule. I replied and said I would contact him in the spring. He gave me a date in February. I couldn't go so I didn't repond. Looks like I'm out the money!!

I had knowledge of the Charles Manson Family murders when I attended the tour. I had read four books, and watched three movies on "Helter Skelter". I have to give this tour guide a very astounding grade. He is one of the best researchers by far. If you want to know what happended in 1969 the era of the Hippies and also the murders you have to book this tour with Scott Michaels . He is one of a kind.

This is my second time to go on this tour - the first time for my daugher Cindy. It was as good or even better the second time as the first time. When we headed over to meet our guide, I told my daughter that I was hoping Scott would be the guide and luckily it was him, as there is no one better at this than him. I also took the regular Dearly Departed Tour with Scott last year with my daughter Cindy and her husband and again he did an outstanding job of keeping it interesting with multiple little details that other tours just simply don't have - never a dull moment. Scott takes his time, has restroom stops, is patience with all of the group's questions, etc. - again, I can't say enough good things about him and the tour in general - I don't know if anyone knows more about the Manson family and those events of August 1969 than Scott does. This tour also provides the best music from 1969 and truly takes you back to that year. I have been on other tours of the LA area about various subjects, movie star homes, etc. with other tour guides who appear to be completely uninformed when compared to Scott. Scott's tours are by far the very best. I can't say enough about how happy that I am with both of his tours and hope to take his new Hollywood Movie Tour in the next few months and may repeat the Dearly Departed Tour again before too long. My daughter Shelley and I will be going on one of them in November, and my daughter Lisa and I are already looking forward to stopping in LA to take one of his tours next summer when we head up to San Francisco. He's the very best and the tour was positively amazing!
