Not having much of a background on the Manson murders, I was looking for a timeline and facts on what happened. Our guide was great- a great mix of entertaining and factual.

Most fascinating 3.5 hours of my life

I'm not usually a tour person, but this isn't your garden variety tour. Scott showed us all the major sites relative to the Tate-Labianca killings, and some more obscure ones like Tex Watson's hose and was able to answer all questions posed. This tour is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in the Tate LaBianca homicides. I would have gladly paid twice what I did for this tour.

From someone ambivalent about the respectfulness

It was sort of hard for me to make the decision to take this tour because I wasn't sure if it was respectful to the dead. Also I was afraid other people on the tour would be Manson admirers. But in the end I'm glad I went. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is that I think people who are very sensitive should be cautious when choosing this tour. It affected me differently than I thought it would. I knew I would be emotional when seeing some of the sites, especially the murder houses. But my reaction was way past what I thought it would be. The hardest part for me was when we pulled up across the street from the LaBianca house. If you’ve read or seen a lot about this case, it just smacks you in the face to be right there, looking at it. I was shaking and crying. I’m shaking as I write this. We were lucky to have no Manson admirers on the tour, but what if there had been someone like that?? I may have ended up in a fist fight. I thought of leaving the tour when we took a break halfway through. I was afraid of seeing the Tate house. That site actually didn’t affect me as much, though, because you are not as close to it when you view it. Also it’s not the same home, so all the pictures you’ve seen are not popping into your head. I am grateful to our guide for having absolutely no fear and taking the bus into difficult to navigate streets, where some people hate him and hate the tour. I was very nervous about people coming out to yell at us or worse, because I wasn’t even sure if I should be there (no haters appeared). I think I’m still not sure if it’s too disrespectful to the dead. The reason I’m glad I went is because it’s the only way to really, well, get smacked in the face by it. To realize that all that stuff you’ve read about did go down. It’s not just a horror story – these were real people. So in a way I feel like I do have respect for the dead, because I wanted to see them as people and not just crime scene photos. Also $5 of each ticket is given to the Tate family’s foundation.

I've been reading about this case for years now, and was impressed with Scott's knowledge and thoroughness! The route we took was well planned and allowed us to hit almost all of the important locations. The victims were in no way degraded and the killers were not glorified. A+ tour.......highly recommended!

I would like to thank Scott for having the insight to make a tour for those of us fascinated with this particular case. I found this tour to be very informative and captivating. The tour really helps you re trace the events that happened on that fateful night while providing you with the actual locations and video footage of the events. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in Manson and a a look back at unique historical events. Scott was on time and prompt with our pick up and really immersed the group into the tour. I met some nice people on the tour and got to share a unique experience with them. In closing I would definitely take the time to check out this tour and enjoy yourself on a look back at the Manson Family and Old Hollywood

Great insights into the case

Scott gave a fascinating tour. It was really interesting to actually see the areas where the murders took place and to get a feel for that time. The use of audio and video really added to the atmosphere. Scott was friendly, considerate of the group, a great narrator, and very sensitive to the nature of what he discussed. He also pointed out sites not necessarily related, but interesting to see nonetheless. Highly, highly recommended for anyone interested in this case.

This was the BEST TOUR we have ever been on!! We went to places in Los Angeles that you would never go with any other tour company. Our tour guide (Scott) was top notch......his enthusiasm and fascination for the subject showed!! If you don't already own his documentary, you will want to after the tour is over. LOVED IT!

Scott was well informed on the events that took place during the Mason Family murders. I learned new facts with regards to the murders and never realized how close I live to them. My 13 year old nephew was completely blown away and bought himself a copy of Helter Skelter.

The Highlight of Our LA Trip
Sat, Aug 17, 13   9:00 AM tempelton Male 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
This is our second Dearly Departed tour (we did the Tragical History Tour in 2011), and once again we found this to be the highlight of our trip to LA. Scott really knows his material and it's clear that he has a passion for the history of the City of Angels. Yes, that passion is undoubtedly for the darker side of the city, but it's clear that while certainly an expert on all matters Manson-related, Scott is clearly no morbid obsessive. Rather, he's interested in telling the stories and seeking out the details of what went on all those years ago - and hey, isn't a city with lots of secrets to tell anyway? The tour - which takes place on a comfy air conditioned bus - provides you with a space to learn more about the subject and also, if you want, to offer your two cents too. Using a combination of multimedia, narration and obviously the sites of the murders, and associated places, this tour will fascinate and enthrall anyone who loves a good mystery (because yes, there are still some lingering mysteries surrounding the case, as you will learn). There's also much else to see along the way, with stunning views of and forays into the Hollywood Hills, including Laurel Canyon, as well as views of Paramount Studios and other interesting sites. I guess the reason we keep coming back to Dearly Departed is because we sense that, Scott (and no doubt his fellow tour guides, though I have not done any tours with them yet) really is passionate about storytelling and about giving you a great experience. Believe me, if you are interested in the darker side of LA-LA-Land, then this tour will thrill you to your core. We are already planning our next trip to LA, with the Dearly Departed Halloween Tour hopefully forming the centerpiece to that journey. Long may Dearly Departed reign!
