A MUST SEE TOUR IN LA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, Feb 21  9:00 AM catundra Female 30-39 Local Individual
I am new to the area and have always had an interest in the Manson murders so when I found out there was an offical tour - I immediately bought a ticket. The tour price is very reasonable for the wealth of information and entertainment Scott Michaels offers on the tour. Whether you are only mildly interested or truly fascniated, you will love every aspect of the tour. Scott offers insider information, plenty of video and audio to entertain you as you are riding to and from the sites. The tour is very friendly and interactive. It felt like a group of friends riding around town instead of virtual strangers. However my favorite aspect of the tour, was the attention given to each tourist interest. When Scott overhead me say my favorite band is The Doors, he then pointed out Doors related locations. Many times he pointed out other topics of interest which made the tour even more interesting and satisfying. I definitely recommend this tour and all others Scott offers. He is incredibly knowledgeable regarding numerous LA sites and makes the tour a one of a kind!

We enjoyed this tour very much. Scott was articulate, accommodating, knowledgeable, and most of all passionate about his topic. His passion and enthusiasm for LA stories made this tour a stand out.

not really that tragic

The tour was good but I expected more "Dearly Departed". The tour actaully became another tour of LA. It seemed as if there were only 10 or some tragic locations to take us to, and that being the fact, we "toured LA" while traveling to those locations. I did, however, learn more about LA than expected.

Lots of Fun!!!

Had a great time on this tour. Our guide had a ton of knowledge about the area, old Hollywood in particular. The audio portion (911 recordings, etc) was also really neat, albeit a bit too loud. My chief criticism was that our guide spent a lot of time dropping names, which got kind of tiresome. You are obviously an expert on this topic - you don't need to drop names to lend more credibility to the tour. The detail and thoroughness of the tour speak for themselves. I am highly recommending this tour, but it's not because you know Danny Thomas. Also, I loved everything about the tour, but it wasn't quite as scandal-oriented as I'd expected. For instance, the "House of Davids" was interesting, but seemed out of place. It's a quirky thing to see, but it was basically the equivalent of taking us to see an Angelyne billboard. Finally, the tour starts just a couple of blocks from the Peterson Automotive Museum - why not show us where the Notorious B.I.G. was shot? That's interesting, and still remains unsolved. Overall, though, this was a great experience. I'd like to come back for the Helter Skelter tour.

The best tour in LA!

Having been to LA many times, I'm more interested in people who are NOT there anymore, than those who are there now. So I went on a ride that had more thrills, spills and chills than a rollercoaster?the Dearly Departed tour. Our guide Scott is obsessed. Check out his site. He's the best man for the job - showing us the famous places where infamous events occurred - good, bad and ugly. We were provided with historic photos of each site to compare with the locations as they appear today. Theme songs, sound bytes, news clips and actual 911 calls placed us right into each scene. The Beverly Hillbillies theme song projected us into the Clampetts' rollicking jalopy, surrounded by towering palm trees on both sides of the street in the opening credits. I think we were all momentarily transposed into black and white too! We saw the exact spot on the street where James Dean lies in the opening scene of Rebel Without A Cause. William Holden?s apartment, the Alto Nido from the film Sunset Blvd. with Gloria Swanson remains unchanged. We learn that TMZ stands for Thirty Mile Zone, a term coined in the 60s. Apparently, everything that?s important happens in a 30-mile radius from the intersection of Beverly and La Cienega. We saw many Marilyn Monroe related spots. There was endless trivia and banter between Scott and the knowledgeable tourists on the bus. Scott owns some remarkable memorabilia; a piece of the Hindenberg, part of the linoleum floor from the Ambassador hotel?s kitchen exit where R.F. Kennedy fell after being shot, tiles from Jayne Mansfield's swimming pool and more. Scott will take you off route if you have a special request that is nearby. He took us to Lucille Ball's house, and Desilu studios. 1-2-3-4!!! 'Rockaway Beach' began as we pass the apartment of Dee Dee Ramone, and the Hollywood Forever cemetery where Johnny Ramone lies, along with hundreds of stars from Tinseltown?s golden years. Scott feverishly rattled off names of the deceased, and while passing Cedars-Sinai Hospital, he was nearly speaking in tongues to list all the births and deaths which occurred there. The chilling confessions of the Menendez brothers to the police were the soundtrack as we pass the house where they killed both their parents. We are serenaded by Bauhaus as we pass Bela Lugosi's home. We see the hotel where Mae West lived. There are hundreds of aging actors from classic films of bygone eras living alone in hotels and in crumbling buildings, still waiting for their phones to ring. They are the true essence of Hollywood! Scott points out the section of the Sunset Strip where they 'paved Paradise (an old estate and hotel) and put up a parking lot.' The tours differ each time, depending on traffic & weather, so you are always in for a surprise. We covered 40 miles! Scott will soon have his Movie Tour license, which will allow him to freeze-frame historic films right next to the actual locations where they were made.

The Dearly Departed tour is a must do for tourist and locals. Scott knows so much about the history of Hollywood that I wish I had taken notes. It was definitely an afternoon well spent.

We had taken the Starline tour a week back and were hoping this was a more moody, with-it, cool tour of the underbelly of LA... The reviews all seemed to suggest it was great. Sadly, it wasn't. There were a couple interesting things but the majority of the tour was our tour guide, an out of work actor, Richard, name dropping. He told us how he's friends with Richard Simmons, knew George Burns, and met all these celebs who "love it when the bus pulls up outside their homes"... Very boring and dull. He kept pointing out buildings he thought had nice architecture but thats it - no details about the architects, why its nice, or the history. Just his opinion. Most of the tour centered around driving through Beverly Hills. Hancock Park, and Holywood looking at Stars homes. Maybe 10 minutes (of the agonizingly long 3+ hours) is devoted to things like the unsolved Black Dalia mystery and the suicides at the Hollywood sign and the Manson killings -- and ALL of the interesting things are played back through an ipod hooked into the van's speaker system. At certain points he would hit a button and we would listen to an audio clip explaining those things. And the main selling point of the tour -- seeing locations where celebs ODed or died? Well, all the "dearly departed" stuff centered around driving past a couple locations (like Cedar Sinai Hospital, Chateau Marmont, and the Viper Room) and the driver yelling out lists of celebs who died there. DULL!

Best tour in L.A.

My wife and I are from Southern California, and couldn't think of a better, or more interesting, way to see Hollywood. We have visited Hollywood many times but never seen it in such fun detail. If you think the name of the tour sounds a little morbid, don't be discouraged. The tour is very informative and presented well. Scott, the tour guide is very enthusiastic about his profession. He REALLY enjoys what he does and it shows. His fun, down-to-earth personality is what makes this tour shine above all others. Don't miss a chance to to take the Dearly Departed Tour. You won't find a better tour for this price!

Our tour director was Scott who was very informative and interesting. He is a font of information and made it very entertaining as well as informative. I liked the audio clips he played while visiting the spots we were passing. He gave everyone plenty of time to see places and ask questions. He is very knowledgable about movies and the stars. I would definitely recommend this tour to others. Having lived most of my life in the Pasadena, CA area, I'm sorry I didn't take the tour sooner. I probably thought it was more for "tourists".

This is some of the Hollywood and LA you DON'T always hear about. It we interesting, well-researched, documented, and well put together. This is fun for out-of-towners and even locals. It's not the glamour and glitz we're used to, but instead behind the scenes. Fun

This was my third time on this tour and it was great. My guests that hadn't been on the tour yet loved it. Only one complaint. I was sad to find out upon our arrival that Scott would not be our tour guide. We were really looking forward to seeing him and my guest meeting him for the first time. It is understandable that he can't do every tour everyday but it would have been nice to know in advance that he has associates helping with the tour. But his tour guide helper was just as good for first timers! I just missed Scott's wicked sense of humor on the tour. I highly recommend this tour.

Thought the tour was fun. I can suggest an additional piece of trivia while driving along Franklin from the James Dean house to the apartment that Dee Dee Ramone OD'd in - 7230 Franklin Ave - Franklin Plaza Apts - this is the location that Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue) OD'd from heroin in the late 80's. His friend Slash (GnR) called 911 and an ambulance came and "kick started his heart" with adrenaline and saved him. For some reason the Helter Skelter audio tapes bugged me. I didn't want to hear the song from Manson, but that could just be me :) Lots of fun, thanks
