Wonderful, Informative, Interesting

Great tour of Hollywood and Television History with locations of tragic historical hollywood events and locations. A few of the locations were difficult to view given how high up they were I had to put my head half way to the floor of the van. But this tour is well worth taking. The tour guide was very informative and funny and I highly reccommend it.

Recommend but with reservations

Went on this tour with my wife and 2 teenagers. The driver arrived promptly and the instructions on where to wait for pickup were clear. Driver was full of information, but dropped too many names on who he knew along the tour. Gave the impression that he was friends with many stars. If he were friends with that many you would think at least one would have acknowledged him along the way. Van was small and very hot. Difficult to see if you weren't by a window, and heaven help you if you are unluckly enough to sit next to someone larger. The tour itself was very interesting and the follow along book of photos helped to pass the time. I would recommend this tour soley for the places visited and the expertise of the driver. Ways to improve would be to beef up the air conditioning or get a little bit bigger van. They do allow you to bring soft drinks, but a nice touch would be complimentary water.

Sign me up again next time I'm in LA!

My friend and I were in LA on vacation from Peoria, Illinois. I've read about the TLB case for years and thought this tour would be informative. Little did I know it would also be so entertaining! Scott did, however, handle the subject matter with dignity and respect...very sympathetic to the victims. I liked the tour so much I even bought his recently released DVD, "Six Degrees of Helter Skelter." I watched it last night and it's like taking the tour all over again. It's a very fringe subject aimed at a very unique (and bizarre, self-admittedly) audience. If you've ever had an interest in what led to the events of July and August 1969 in LA, make your reservation immediately. You won't be disappointed.

This was a very fun and informative tour. The AV stuff on the bus really enhanced the experience, and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. A very enjoyable experience, highly recommend it!

IF YOU ONLY HAVE TIME TO DO ONE THING IN LA...

I have been interested in the Tate-LaBianca case for quite sometime. Have read Bugliosi's "Helter Skelter" and followed developments with the victims and the guilty through the years. I've also heard about and been interested in Dearly Departed Tours, and when I discovered they were running a Helter Skelter tour, I knew I had to try and go while I was in Anaheim for a conference. It was an ordeal to get to LA via trains and cabs from Anaheim, but from the moment I got into my seat in the van, it was absolutely worth it! Scott Michaels does a tremendous job as your tour guide, giving you the best information available, all the theories that might make sense, always ready to hear from his guest about what they've read or heard and always ready to answer your questions. Scott takes you to every eerie spot and to some important contextual places to fill out the story I hadn't anticipated. While traveling to the locations, you wind your way through some of LA's most famous locales, the Sunset Strip, Laurel Canyon, Mulholland Drive, Beverly Hills and Hollywood. The music from 1969 adds to the atmosphere, and the video and audio clips take you into the lives and minds of both the victims and the murderers. And always at the center is a consummate, enthusiastic tour guide sharing with you what he loves to do. All the stars are in alignment for a great trip back to the moment that helped bring the 60s to its dramatic and disturbing conclusion. It's just not often that you find something that actually exceeds your expectations, but this tour did it for me! Don't worry about the cost or the amount of time or the size of the van or anything else, just sign up and GO! It's a great, great tour you won't forget! I'll certainly do it again next time I'm in the area. Thanks, Scott!

This tour was great. Scott was a great tour guide, he was very knowledgeable about everything he talked about. He added little tid-bits to make sure we knew what he was talking about. I never wanted the tour to end. I highly recommend it to everyone thats interested in the history of hollywood and hollywood actors that have passed away.

More than a tour about the departed
Mon, Jul 6  1:00 PM HEIDIKMCC Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
We booked this tour because my grown daughter was interested in this type of tour. The tour was very interesting, and we enjoyed it. As we passed many of the places where people had "departed" we also passed other sights which were brought to our attention. We took a general tour of LA the following day, and found that we had already seen many of the sights with Scott on the Dearly Departed tour. Scott was extremely knowledgable about this topic. We were allowed to ask questions, and he answered them all willingly. I understand that Scott is planning a new tour about filming sites of movies. The people on the tour will be shown a clip of a movie and will then see the actual filming location. I would love to go on this tour, and will definitely do so if I am in LA again.

This tour was interesting, a bit long, but Scott was very friendly and informative. I'm 24 years old, and a lot of people on the tour I didn't know, or have only heard of and did really know. If you are into famous death and how people died and where they died I would recommend this.

If you are into the darker side of Hollywood mixed in with some history and even some tabload sights, this is the tour for you. The tour guide is happy to answer questions and compare notes with you. The stops are interesting and the presentation is fabulous! Scott really has a sense of humor and it shows. If you are into these things, I cannot reccomend this tour enough! You get to see a lot of cool things and don't have to deal with the traffic...just sit back and relax and take pictures (if your flash is off they come out fine). If I am ever back in LA, I am doing it again, again! Especially good fun if you are a fan of findadeath.com.

Great Tragical History/Hollywood Information Tour
Sun, Jul 5  1:00 PM rhatley Male 40-49 Local Couple on a Date
Scott Michaels is the real deal! I've been on other tours hosted by folks who were waiting for their big break as an actor. They've told me that Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson and Robert De Niro all lived next to each other on the same street in Beverly Hills. Balderdash! Only Tom lives in Beverly Hills; Mel lives in Malibu and Bobby doesn't even live in Los Angeles! Scott has a passion for what he does, he takes it seriously (but he has fun doing it), has an encyclopedic knowledge of Hollywood history and he's not trying to be the next big thing. He genuinely cares about giving his tourists the best possible experience. I highly recommend Dearly Departed Tours because you'll have fun, you'll be entertained and you'll have an appreciation for the history (some wonderful, some tragic and all of it unique) of Hollywood. I enjoyed myself so much that I'll be attending the Helter Skelter Tour of the Manson murder sites in L.A. in September. I even bought Scott's DVD, "The Six Degrees of Helter Skelter", and was riveted by it. I've read everything I can get my hands about the Tate/LaBianca murders and even I learned some things I didn't know. In closing, Scott does a great tour and you'll definitely get your money's worth. Sincerely, Rodney J. ("Rod") Hatley, J.D., LL.M.

This tour wasn't as morbid as I thought it would be -- which is a good thing. Scott packed a lot of material in 3.5 hours -- all of it interesting.

This tour was a hoot.

This was my second time taking the tour. I had out of town guests with only 1 afternoon to sightsee. I felt that within 3 hours my guests could really get a feel of the geography, architecture, pop culture (past and present), and of course the tragical aspects from Hollywood's history. What I didn't realize is how the tour is a work in progress, with updated information included since my last tour. So although it was my second time around, much of where we went and what was discussed was new to me, which I appreciated. The middle of the tour, the time from the rest stop at the Will Rogers Park to the end of the tour was too long. I noticed a few people nodding off just from the motion of the bus for so long. I would recommend the stop in the middle of the time or two stops. Although the driver offered a second stop, no one took him up on it and in a group setting, some people are hesitant to speak up for what they would really prefer. My out of town guests loved the tour and were amazed at how much they learned. This was certainly easy on me as a host. Thank you. I felt that the cost of the tour provided very good value for the money. One more thing that was mentioned to me by my guests was that there were a few seats on the bus that didn't provide easy viewing; there was a wall instead of a window next to them so they had to cran their necks to see throughout most of the tour's mentions on one side of the bus. Zerve was also easy to use and not a costly fee.

This tour is a great way to learn about Hollywood and it's stars not only their deaths and how they occured, and where they occured, but a lot of Hollywood Star history and information. Our tour guide Richard was very informed. The only thing I could recomend is expanding the tour into the San Fernando Valley where numerous stars have either died or have been killed. Maybe it could even be an additional or different tour. Janet & Friends

While I would not strongly recommend this tour for anyone who does not have a fascination with the "morbid" aspects of Hollywood life, it also does have something for the guest who enjoys seeing the architecture and history of a city. The driver's skilful meanderings through old and new Hollywood ... fillig in the history of the City , describing the circumstances of the best-publicized deaths, and adding musical accompaniements to the story ... make it a very special afternoon for both local and tourist alike. Richard's in-depth knowledge and apparent love of the city, were most welcome. He was friendly, funny, and responsive to all questions. Incredible memory for names and dates as well. I've been twice and have recommended the tour to friends. In a week in which Michael Jackson, Farah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, and the hairy TV pitchman all died, I think I will have to go again in the future.
