Not Worth The Cost

The first three years we did the 1/2 day fishing we were out on the Dana Pride and were very happy with the results. we and everyone else on those trips caught fish. The last two years we ended up on the Clemente and were very dissapointed. Since the purchaser has no control over which boat you get to go out on it's basically a crap shoot. Our party of four caught 3 fish and because one was a non game fish (basically bait) we only got 2 keepers. @ $40 each with license and poles that was $160 for 4 small fillets on an over crowded boat. There were 40 people on our boat and there were only 40 keepers total. On Long Island and Virgina Beach for less money the boats hold just as many people but they also have seating for everyone to get out of the sun/weather because they are longer wider boats, the poles and bait are included and are identicle (personal rigs are not allowed) so there is less time lost untangling lines. I just felt that for the same investment of time and money there are better ways to spend my valuble vacation time than to accept pot luck and end up on a boat that couldn't find fish even if it fell into a bait tank. ALSO, why does it say 5 hours?? We left the dock at 5:30PM and got back to the dock at 9:30PM. That is only four hours total. I think they still owe me an hour. What a rip-off!!!!

Terrific Deep Sea Fishing Outfitter

My teenaged son has been on several 1/2 day trips with this outfitter- he always has a great time. Each boat has a different captain and crew but all are very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend the Kids Club and Kids Fishing Camp in the summer, too.

Elbow to elbow

I would not recommend taking this trip unless you don't mind trying to fish with 95 other people with two staff members to help. I am an accomplished fisherman and I didn't pull in one fish, not even a poisonous one! With 5 of us who fish all summer long you would have thought that we would have caught more than one very small keeper. You have to change your bait every 2-3 minutes and you have to shimmey past all the other people who are standing elbow to elbow to get to the bait. Most fish caught were not keepers and the biggest one I could have easily caught in Nebraska in one of our beautiful lakes. Most definitely a different species but still. The restrooms are not convenient since they are on the side of the boat where everyone is standing elbow to elbow trying to fish. The limited staff that was available were OUTSTANDING. Hats off to Tim, Chris, Tom the Captain and Jack in the galley for doing their best! The breakfast burritos are fantastic! and the beers were cold.

probably should have waited another week or two so water would get a few degrees warmer. but the captain and crew were very helpful and deligent in trying to get the right spot. unlike some boats that only try 1 or 2 spots, we tried several which you must do to find that right temperture level for a good bite. bait was very lively and food was very good. i plan on going in 2 or 3 weeks on same boat. by the way this was my first time at dana point. i usually fish closer to home but this was well worth the extra drive. sincerely, dennis mukai

Better planning

It took over an hour to get to a fishing hole. We traveled down the coast and came back up the coast before we droped anchor. The crew was chumming only the back part of the boat.

Fairly good fishing

Fishing was good on our twilight trip, it would have been lots better with anchovies for bait, we had 90 % large sardines. And the 13 inch Calico bass in general were not large enough to swallow a large sardine. The Crew on the Clementine was good and very helpful. The bass readily went after the few chovies we had.

Lousy Fishing

My son (15) went with 2 friends. They got 4 fish between the 3 of them and 1 was a mackerel. Captain should have known better locations to go to.

1/2 Day Fishing Trip was really a treat

Went out on a 10 O'Clock trip on the Clemente, and it was great. Fishing had been marginal due to water temps being low, but a warm week leading up to Thursday had helped bump it up a bit, and the fishing was better than expected. Captain did a great job of getting us on a rock South of the pier, and it produced for several hours, with Rockfish, Sheephead, Calico's and Sand Bass. Fish were biting on squid, shrimp and live Chovies. Once this spot cooled off we headed back North for a few minutes and fished a rock with a lot of kelp, flylining Anchovies for Calico bass, and we hit quite a few. It was really fun, and just about the whole boat had something in their bags by then. Saw a few pods of dolphin, a few seals interested in a quick snack, jellyfish and so on. Crew did a great job of helping with snagged lines, bagging fish and grilling up some awesome grilled cheese sandwiches and killer cheeseburgers. All in all a really nice day. I've been fishing out of Dana Wharf SF for 20+ years, and as always, they have experienced Captains, great crew, and they know where to go to get you hooked up. And they're friendly too........ One thing to remember is that you can't park in the lot adjacent to the DWSF office anymore, as it has a four hour limit on that lot now, so you have to go check in at the office, get a parking pass, and then move your vehicle to the long term lot which is further away. So don't lug all your gear to the office, only to find out like I did that you have to go move your car. :(
