Great trip - saw whales and dolphins

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Dana Wharf whale-watching trip. The captain went out of his way to make certain we saw both whales and dolphins. When he located a large pod of whales, he kept the boat with them, giving those on board ample time to watch and take photos. He brought us right to the edge of the pod, so that the dolphin were literally beside and under the boat. Later he spotted two Minke whales, an unusual species for southern California. One of them breached four times, a rare occurrence, but great for photos. On the return trip, the captain pointed out a grey whale to us. He attempted to bring the boat to where the whale might breach, but the whale stayed submerged. The captain kept the boat out at sea an extra half hour in hopes we would see more grey whales. We were thrilled to see the whales that we did. It was clear the Dana Point crew wants their passengers to have a good experience. We did.

Dana Wharf Whale Watching tour was everything I expected and more. The customer service from the clerks, shipman, and capital was better than expected. They were all friendly, happy and gave you fun facts and lots of information about the whales when we saw them. This was a bucket list item on my list and it was awesome to see the mother and baby whale.

Our captain and his first mate made sure that we were able to see whales despite reports that some whales were unfortunately hit by other boats and he thought we initially would not be able to see the whales. Great experience for our group of 9!

Fun adventure but minimal sightings

I would go again but would do more research about when whale sightings are more abundant. We saw a few gray whales blowing water but that's it. Unique experience even so.

We felt since it was whale season that there would be more activity The boat trip was very nice. We would definitely come back. But did wish we would have seen more whales and at least some dolphins.

We took the 2 hour boat trip and it was so nice it didn't seem that long out on the water. So exciting that we actually viewed a whale. The entire boat was caught up in the moment that we all exclaimed "there it is" each time the whale surfaced. I wish we would have been able to come upon a group of whales but it was still an experience to remember.

Saw a whale waaaaay far away, very disappointed

My husband and I decided to save money by going on a 8 am tour. Which was a huge mistake. Apparently, that early morning tour is designed for the captain to find out the location of the whale for his next tours for the day. So we pretty much chased one whale for a while, but the closest we could get to it was probably 1000 feet. Once every 10 minutes some of the guests would exclaim and point their finger at the direction where they just saw a whale, and the captain would steer that direction. And by that time the whale was gone, and the chase continued. It was so damn far, that even the captain couldn't say what type of the whale it was. We saw a bunch of dolphins, but that was not what we went there for. I would rather save the money and watch whales on youtube. My recommendation though is - do not go on an early morning tour. It's nothing but a test tour to locate the whales.

Even though it was a day of light rain, our trip was fantastic. We had the pleasure of seeing a large pod of dolphins, and two whales that let us watch them for more than 20 minutes. if you go when it is raining, don't forget to bring a poncho, or some kind of raincoat. You will love it!
