Quite Pleased

I'm trying to get my land legs back as I'm typing this. I managed to score a couple of really cheap advance tickets for Dana Wharf's whale watching tour last month. Two hours of cetacean-stalking 'n gawking on the Dana Pride for $10 a head! It wasn't indicated on their sales webpage, but I'm guessing the generous discount was a daylight-savings special. We started by following the trail of a wayward gray whale going south for about 30-40 minutes. It went up to breathe every once in a while but we were never able to get more than 1/4 mile close to it. I got a "Screw you guys, I wanna get to Mexico ASAP!" vibe from the giant beast. That's OK, I understand. Dana Pride's boat commander guy finally gave up and steered us toward a distant pod of dolphins. The host guy on the lower deck kept reassuring us that we would see "thousands" of dolphins (the company guarantees a sighting ya know, or your next visit's free). I wouldn't say there were thousands, but there were definitely a bunch of dolphins leaping and following us north for the majority of the tour. Quite a sight to behold; I just wished that southern California seawater were clear blue instead of murky green. After that, we made a quick stop at a green buoy convered with photogenic sea lions and returned to the harbor. There was a tip jar for the hosts next to the exit and a discount coupon for a future trip. The last time I had taken this tour was during a field trip back when I was a kid, and I didn't see anything more than a *very* distant whale tail. I'm very glad I got much more out of the tour this time around. Your experience will most likely vary. I'm sure there have been other excursions where whales have come up close to the boats. Don't expect too much and you'll leave satisfied.

This was an enjoyable trip, we got to see part of a whale who was being stubborn but overall I enjoyed the trip out to sea. I liked the fact that the tour company wants to ensure your satisfaction and provided passes for a future whale watching trip, although we wont be in Orange County again in the near future we will definitely consider this company for next time.

We had a fun time on the boat my 3 year old had a blast, I just wished we would have seen whales. We did see a lot of dolphins which left us happy. Maybe next time, I would definately try it again.

Foggy, but fun

The fog was in which made it difficult to find any whales. However, the crew made a valiant effort. We saw several pods of dolphins & stayed out an extra half an hour in search. We got 50% discount passes for another trip. We'll definitely be going again.

Terrific even when the whales don't show up

We are always happy to travel with the folks from the Dana Wharf Whale Watching excursions. This was probably about our 6th trip and our first sunset cruise. The crew is friendly and knowledgeable. The ship is clean and enjoyable. This cruise was not too crowded, so there were plenty of seats below and above (I do wish they had a few more seats on the boat). We did come upon a large pod of bottle nose dolphin -- this was our first encounter with them, as we usually have seen the common dolphin. We were given much time to enjoy them, photograph them and watch them play with the ship. There was no mention from the PA about not being able to find a whale -- I wish they had clarified that. But we also know that whale sightings are down this season. Last stop was to visit the sea lions that take refuge on a red buoy in the water, and they always delight the kids. This was a birthday gift for our daughter, and her request to take out the cruise again. We will be back as many times as our schedule allows and highly recommend it to all.

Well Done

The crew of the Dana Pride do a great job, and the boat is very pleasant. We did see some whales, but nothing spectacular as they were busy migrating, so just a few fins and no breaches. We also saw dolphins and thought the skipper did a fine job educating the passengers with his comments. Good solid family fun.
