Magical!!

We had the most magical time. I took my 5 year old and he and I had the best time sharing in the beauty of being around the pod of Dolphins and the Blue Whale. We had the pleasure of being with a select group of friends that chartered the boat for ourselves. I HIGHLY reccomend this experience! I can now check that off my "bucket list"!

It was disappointing in the fact that we did not see any whales. I know it is random but I wonder how hard the guides try to find the whales...........they seemed to be doing alot of chatting and talking on their cell phones.

Awesome Whale Watching Experience!

We had such a great time whale watching with the crew from Dana Wharf Sportfishing! The captain made sure he did his part in making our whale watching experience great. We were able to see a couple fin whales. The captain had spent as much time as he possibly could have with the whales before we had to turn around and head back to the Harbor. Time was very limited, however on the way back to the harbor a couple more whales were spotted and the captain proceeded to change course from the harbor to see the new whales. Time had to be made up to get back to the harbor in time for the next group to get on the boat. The capt could have not stopped for the second pod of whales and kept heading to the harbor, but instead he stopped for us then made up the time by going full speed back to the harbor. This cost the boat and crew more money in gas which is a big factor in a boat that size. We were all very happy that he made the business decision to show us more whales! Thanks guys!!!!!

Whale Watching Tuesday

We enjoyed ourselves so much on Tuesday's 10 am Whale Watching trip. It was easy to get the tickets (though we stood in line outside first--it's inside you want to go.) The boat was the perfect size; any smaller and my two year old would not have had enough room to roam, any larger and it would have lost it's intimate feel.

great experience, good price, good length

The tour was great, though we didn't see any whales (can't blame them). However, we did see a ton of dolphins (two species), one of the groups was a megapod with hundreds in all directions. They were swimming with the boat and doing tricks without any fish or anything else from the boat. All natural. The naturalist was very informative and nice and the captain was great at spotting animals. The boat wasn't crowded and the length of the tour was not too long and not too short. The tickets were also moderately priced.

Wonderful Experience

We both had so much fun on the 2 hour trip. We ended up seeing 2 big dolphin groups, a couple minke whales and 2 blue whales. It was so much fun and I think we will be going 2 times a year now. It was a wonderful experience with everyone on board participating in the search and sightings of whales. I had such a fun time I wish I could go EVERY day!!

Wonderfully fun and educational!

I have had the pleasure to ride on the Cat boat three times, all with different groups of family and children. First time, we did not see whales, but saw three different kinds of dolphins, which was absolutely amazing, so I did not miss the whales. The next two times, we spotted whales - which was great! But, I think it is the dolphins that really make the trip! They are so fun and playful, the whole boat goes crazy when they swim by the boat. I highly recommend this adventure for the whole family!

A different experience

Dana Wharf fishing has always provided my two young boys and I with the great experiences. That is, up until now. We have been on 4 different trips. Clemente Awesome! Our first three excursions were on the "Clemente." The captain of the Clemente will not hesitate to trolley around to find the best area if one location isn't getting anything. With his recommendations on bait for the best bite, to how deep to drop your line, you are constantly being assisted either by the Captain himself or his crew. Sum Fun....Not so fun! On my last outing, I put together a 12 person party on the "Sum Fun." We got to our first location, and that's where we stayed the whole day. We were accompanied by 3 or 4 sea lions that continuously robbed us of bait and catch. Also the fish were not really biting in that location. I was expecting the captain to pull up anchor and get us to a better local, but it never happened. It's a good thing I had bought Hot Dogs and Hamburgers for our Bar-B-Que after. I completely understand that you don't always catch the fish you want, however, it would have nice if they could have at least looked for a bettter local. Bottom line, if you get on the Clemente you'll surely enjoy it. If you end up on the "Sum Fun," You could be headed for disappointment.

A Father and his Sons - True Bliss off Dana Point!

This is where my boys and I connect. This is where we are taking away memories that are never forgotten. At 6 and 10, both my sons know how to land their catch. The fish and the good times are plenty. The Captain and crew of the "Clemente" really make it their job to ensure their guests are accommodated. The crew has been instrumental in helping my two boys become two young "fishermen" with their expertise and caring approach. I actually just started them with fishing and we have been back three times in two months. What a tremendous experience! David Jarvis Orange, CA

Fishing was interrupted countless times by the pelicans and cormorants that went after our bait. Not really anyone's fault, but completely wrecked what could have been an enjoyable fishing day. If the captain or anyone can figure out how to get rid of the birds, then this fishing trip would be pleasant, and actually fun!

Great crew, slow fishing, pelicans suck
Wed, Aug 24, 11   10:00 AM JaredCBell Male 20-29 Local Individual
My fishing time was 10am to 3pm. Typical half day. We left at about 1020 on the Sum Fun boat, stopped to get the live bait, arrived at our first fishing spot at a little after 11. But aside from the late start, the captain also fished later than we were supposed to which was nice. Crew was VERY helpful with everyone, didnt seem to get annoyed either especially with all the kids on board. They pushed the boat almost to its max (60 people) with 54. But amazingly, I only got crossed once and was able to fish almost the entire time. I hooked up TWO pelicans at once, crew member ran over and got them off no problem. After that it was a sculpin fest and they were running around helping everyone get them off their lines. My only complaint is that we sat on dead spots for a bit longer than I would have liked. It was extremely slow fishing as it was and I think we should have moved around a bit more. But Im not a captain and im not sure exactly how they decide where, when and what spots to go to. Anyways, only caught two fish, neither of them keepers, hooked into something MASSIVE though which was fun to pull up. It swam down and got caught under a rock but luckily my 65lb braid was able to pull it up. Half way up to the boat, it got off the hook. Good experiences all around and I learned a lot as this was my first party boat. Tips: 1) Bring Dramamine if you get motion sickness at all. The boats out there really rock 2) the heavier weight the better. I was using 4oz pyramid with a double dropper loop setup and with the strong current was able to stay almost right in front of me, while everyone else was drifting around. 3) Cast or drop when no pelicans are by your bait. They were extremely annoying stealing everyones bait and getting tangled. The big weight helps the bait get down before they dive for it as well. 4) 15-20 line is all you need. I had 65lb braid to a 20lb fluoro top shot. This worked really well ripping through the kelp beds. 5) Smaller live bait the more fish you will catch. You can go big and try to get bigger fish but if you want more of an enjoyable experience, stick with the small sardines or anchovies. The ticket our day was squid strips though. 6) if you are an experienced angler, arrive a little early so you can get a spot you want on the boat. I was first in line and got the spot I wanted. This is also key for pre-launch. I was flipping a swim bait by the docks waiting for people to load on to the boat. I got slammed by a huge barracuda right there. Wasnt able to set the hook though but theres a lot of fish in that area. Just a little warmup fun.

My 7 year old granddaughter and went out on a 12:00 PM sail. The previous sail had seen two blue whales that were familiar to the Captain and crew. The Captain took us to the location where he thought we'd get to see two other whales heading south. They did not show, BUT we got to see a whale new to the area thanks to the Captain's determination. The information about the whale was very informative. Getting to see the largest mammal on earth is something we will never forget!

We went on the catamaran on July 16 at 2:00. We were with our 8 year old grandson who is from Arizona. We saw several pairs of Blue Whales, we saw a Fin Whale and a large school of dolphins. It was spectacular! The crew did a great job explaining everything to us, including the large red spot in the water aka whale poop! It was so interesting! Our grandson had a ball too!
