Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching

Bring a jacket. We went in July and it was alittle cool.

It was really fun. I enjoyed it when the crew members talked to us and told us about all the dolphins we were seeing. Having them share their knowledge really made the trip more meaningful. The kids enjoyed it. It would have been better if we would have seen a whale, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Next time. It was a nice bonus to receive a 50% voucher to come again. We may definitely use it in the near future since we are local.

it was a beautiful day on the ocean. the crew was nice and tried to find a whale for us to see. but, no luck. we got whale checks just the same and will try again next year. i enjoy whale watching but was sorry we had no luck. though, like i said, it was a nice day at sea with my friend.

I TRY TO GO EVERY YEAR AND ALWAYS ENJOY IT. THE BOAT RIDE IS ENJOYABLE AND I HAVE NEVER FAILED TO SEE A WHALE THOUGH THIS YEAR IT DID TAKE A WHILE TO FIND ONE. WE FINALLY DID. WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE. THEY ARE A SIGHT TO SEE.

Friendly crew, and excellent burgers (thank you George)! Captain was eager to find us good catches, and did not hesitate to move as often as necessary to do so. The entire trip was easy and stress free.

Honestly, I would have to say that the 1/2 day trip on the SUM FUN was NO FUN! I go out quite a bit but mainly out of San Diego. This was my first trip out of Dana. Maybe I have been spoiled by the excellent service recieved from Point Loma, and H&M Landing, but the boat "SUM FUN" out of Dana was terrible. The deck hands were awful, sure I cought fish, but again the service from the hands was horrible. I would not reccomend this trip at all. The main problem was the crew, they were not good at all.

This trip was with my son and his son. All were first timers on a commercial sport fishing boat. We rented poles. It seems the most success by others was with spoons or lures. The live anchovies were mainly eaten by the seals and pelicans. A suggestion to those renting equipment that maybe different types of bait (lures,etc.) might increase the catching would be appreciated. After all, persons renting equipment must be novices otherwise they would already have what is needed. The boat was fine, very clean and the galley and prepared breakfast sandwiches were very good and reasonably priced, which is appreciated. We enjoyed the experience and will do it again. But first I will need to get my own lures etc. The crew was fine and provided help when asked.

Someone on our boat caught an endangered species fish and the fish was filleted at the end of the ride.

My 10 year old son is now hooked (pun intended)on fishing and can't wait to go again!

Did not see any whales, however, saw a school of rare riso dolphins. Beautiful day to be on the water.

The boat was over packed I think with around 50 fisherman. The fishing was very poor, but this is not due the the crew tring to find the fish they tried very hard to find the fish moving serveral times. The main issue was the fast moving current and people not following there lines. The breakfast Burrito was very good.

No whales, but literally thousands of dolphins that frolicked around the boat and wake.

It was an amazing time! We were on vacation and decided at the last moment to go out whale watching, the sea was calm and the temps no too cold so we booked the noon trip. Boat was clean and well stocked with snacks and refreshments at quite reasonable prices. The crew friendly and knowledgeable. We saw hundreds of dolphins and got up and close to sea lions as well. Unfortunately, we didn't see any greys during the trip, but the captain had received info that there were some headed towards us from up north, but our time had run out. He didn't have to do this, but he told everyone on board that if we had the time he would take us back out, for free, on the 2pm trip and we'd try to get to the group of whales headed our direction. We did get a glimpse of the amazing animals, but were't able to get very close as it was a mother and her calf. She did everything possible to keep us at a good distance from her baby, but was fun and interesting just the same. The captain manuvered the boat to entice the dolphins to play with us and what a show we got! Many of them chased the boat and would leap 15 feet or so out of the water jumping our wake. I would recommend this to everyone!!

No whales the day we did the whale watching, but plenty of dolphins, a nice crew and the will to do it again as soon as possible!

We had a great time on the whale watching trip, however, we did not see any whales or any dolphins. Maybe next season.....But overall great outdoor event with the kids.
