Crew member was drinking and smoking
Sun, Jul 26  5:00 PM johngetz1 Male 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
The captain did a good job but the two deck hands weren't with the program. One was busy spending time with his girlfriend and the other was drinking beer and smoking. We had to ask him to remove himself and his smoke from the passenger area. If the deck hands had spent more time looking for whales, we might have seen one.

Seven in our group, five adults and two teenage boys. The kids and two adults where here on vacation from England. It was their first time fishing anywhere. We all had a GREAT time and the boat and crew were first rate and VERY helpfull. We have already made plans to return in February and go out again! Thank you!

Mediocre Effort
Thu, Jul 23  5:30 PM pkwatts Male 30-39 Local Family Without Children
There are several dolphin and whale watching cruises around. Haven't tried them, but I imagine they're probably better than Dana Wharf. Although the cruise was cheap, I wasn't particularly impressed by the knowledge of the crew, the organization of the enterprise (use a lot of inexpensive, young labor), or what we saw that evening -- the captain spent way too much time with a small pod of dolphins instead of at least trying to make a decent effort to find other marine mammals (i.e., whales). They would have been a bit more interesting. When I do this again, I'll use another company that goes out on the 5-hour cruises. It's more expensive, but you pay for what you get.

Relaxing trip
Tue, Jul 21  5:00 PM rodneyestle Male 50-59 Local Couple on a Date
Don't forget to take binoculars as it is hard to get close to the whales they keep swimming underwater while feeding so you don't know where they will pop up next. Also you have to be quick with your camera and have a good zoom feature or else pictures won't turn out very good. Don't go below unless you only want to see other peoples rear ends.

Day of fishing
Tue, Jul 21  10:00 AM ejchanda64 Male 20-29 Local Other
It was a hot day with little fish bites. But that's fishing, no guarantee you're going to catch anything. A bit crowded but I'll go again.

Saw Blue Whales
Sun, Jul 19  1:00 PM ware_ed Male 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Other
Tour was full 2.5 hours, plus, as we saw two blue whales, and several dolphins, the crew went out of their way to treat us to a good show. Thanks.

Fishing is fishing.

Our group was most of the male side of a wedding party and some relatives (all male), 2 were young boys who had never been fishing before. Overall it was a fun trip. I only got a couple bites, and my sons never got a nibble, so they got bored and tired early. I happened to be stationed at the bow, and it seems all the good activity was off the very crowded stern. I believe the captain was doing a good job finding fish, as there were some keepers brought on board, but all from the rear. The boat was crowded (60) people so not everyone could get to the stern. We had a lot of tangled lines due to the crowding. Most of the fish I saw were too small to keep, but there were a lot of them. I kind of expected fishing is fishing, you throw a line in and never get a bite while a person right next to you seems to get all the fish. I guess the law of averages says, the more times you throw the line in the water, the better the chance at catching the big one. The crew was knowledgeable and helpful and it made for a pleasant trip. They have a galley so food and drinks are not an issue. I would do this trip again, maybe have better luck next time.

Yes, the 'bite was on' . We had a 'great time'. Easy purchase and check-in was quick. Our fishing trip was a successful thanks to the service and caring of the personel at Zerve and Dana Wharf!

Fun for everyone
Sun, Jul 19  12:45 PM wpetko Male 30-39 Local Family With Children
I took my son (8yrs) fishing on the 1/2 day and we had a blast. Make sure you bring some dramamine if you get sea sick and sun screen. The deck hands were great, they were running around getting fish off the lines, helping with tangled lines or setting up the lines to fish. The fishing was ok (because a seal came in and scared the fish away just when they started biting). You will stop at about 2-3 different spots to fish depending on how the fishing is. But overall it was a great trip. Would recommended to anyone that has just started or does not have time for the whole day trips.

A Father and his Sons - True Bliss off Dana Point!
Sun, Jul 19  6:30 AM Jarvisboys Male 40-49 Local Family With Children
This is where my boys and I connect. This is where we are taking away memories that are never forgotten. At 6 and 10, both my sons know how to land their catch. The fish and the good times are plenty. The Captain and crew of the "Clemente" really make it their job to ensure their guests are accommodated. The crew has been instrumental in helping my two boys become two young "fishermen" with their expertise and caring approach. I actually just started them with fishing and we have been back three times in two months. What a tremendous experience! David Jarvis Orange, CA

Leave Late back on Time
Sun, Jul 19  6:30 AM ArchTeer Male 50-59 Local Other
I found it odd that when reading the daily catchs on line that it shows a great deal of fish being caught, but then on the boat few fish were caught and the captain made a statement that it has really been slow lately! Another statement from the captain made while sitting at the dock was "we are running late this morning" everyone on the boat paid for 5 hours of fishing and we were all cut short. We left late and arrived back on time. To make things worse not very many fish were caught and condition were good.

too crowded
Sun, Jul 19  6:30 AM thegrau Male 40-49 Local Group of Friends
This operation books too many people to make it truely enjoyable. The boat was elbow to elbow from bow to stern. but as they say, the worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work and we did catch some fish and the deckhands were helpful. I'm sure I will go again, but never again on the weekend unless they limit their load.

Twilight Fishing highly reco. but not w/Dana Wharf
Sat, Jul 18  5:30 PM mooyeado Male 30-39 Local Group of Friends
Twilight fishing is great, however, I will not bring friends again to Dana Wharf. This was like my sixth time of bringing friends (in groups) and all but one time I and they came home with nothing. I had 5 people with me this time, and when everyone was catching fish they decided to move to another spot because most were smaller. I had 4 other people that were gonna come but couldn't make it--thank God. Well, we didn't get anymore bites the rest of the night--even after 2 more moves. We should have stayed where we were catching fish. I know you can't catch fish every time, but this isn't the first trip that we were catching fish and they decided to move. Aside from occassionally using the benefits of Kids Club, I probably wont use Dana Wharf again. I've had sucky experiences with about 30 different friends I've taken to Dana Wharf, including a bunch of friends for my brother's bachelor party night. Tooo disappointing.

Sum Fun is NO Fun!
Wed, Jul 15  10:00 AM rr2132 Male 30-39 Local Family Without Children
Honestly, I would have to say that the 1/2 day trip on the SUM FUN was NO FUN! I go out quite a bit but mainly out of San Diego. This was my first trip out of Dana. Maybe I have been spoiled by the excellent service recieved from Point Loma, and H&M Landing, but the boat "SUM FUN" out of Dana was terrible. The deck hands were awful, sure I cought fish, but again the service from the hands was horrible. I would not reccomend this trip at all. The main problem was the crew, they were not good at all.

Nice trip to see marine mammals on the ocean
Tue, Jul 14  5:00 PM bamurray1950 Male 50-59 Local Family Without Children
We didn't see blue whales, but that's really a function of the whales, not of the boat operator. We saw several groups of dolphins. Boat was great and clean, commentary was useful, overall an enjoyable evening.
