Nice trip to see marine mammals on the ocean
Tue, Jul 14  5:00 PM bamurray1950 Male 50-59 Local Family Without Children
We didn't see blue whales, but that's really a function of the whales, not of the boat operator. We saw several groups of dolphins. Boat was great and clean, commentary was useful, overall an enjoyable evening.

Fun Trip for the Money but crowded
Tue, Jul 14  12:00 PM janahayden Male 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
I took my 6 year old son on the half day trip. Overall we had a great bonding experience, and that is what matters. We went on the half day so it was only $19.50 each. Very reasonable. The boat was very crowded. If you go get there early and rush on to the boat so you can get a seat on the back. The crew was nice. We caught a few fish which was exciting for a 6 year old, but nothing big enough to keep.We only purchased 1 rod and reel with our tickets, but they gave us 2 which was neat to. My son had a hamburger on the boat for $5.50 so it was reasonable too.The strangest part was when we arrived to check in. It was a little confusing as to which line was the check in and which was for purchasing. So everyone was standing in line and the lady that worked there started literally yelling at everyone to back out the door and form a line. It was kind of strange because we had all just arrived and she was borderline manic. There was no need for it and just made everyone more confused. I think it kind of started the trip out in a somber mood for all the visitors. Most people are on vacation trying to enjoy themselves and the lady just started spazzing out. Anyways as for the parking we had no problem finding it. There were spots open everywhere. Overall fun for a dad and 6 year old, and the price was great.

Best value for our summer vacation memories!

This activity was not only the best value for a day trip, but was also the most memorable. We didn't get to see any whales, but the amount of dolphins we encountered was unreal! Our daughters(ages 5 and 8) were so excited. They were able to see the details in the dolphins faces and even named one "Flipper" since it kept doing flips in front of the boat. We LOVED it!

My great grandson (age 10) and I caught a lot of fish (although they were all too small to keep) and we had fun. It will be a day to be remembered by both of us. Good trip for a first timer.

A rather "generic" fishing trip.
Sun, Jul 12  12:45 PM jimjazz Male 50-59 Combination Family With Children
The trip was scheduled out at 1245pm. We actually waited for a family of four AFTER departure! What' up with that? Crowded boat, went to some places where you just catch everyday fish. It was like fishing with a hook and line off the dock in Minnesota; you're guaranteed to catch a bunch but you wouldn't want any of them. I understand we're not "sportfishing" but we expected more. The Sunday special was affordable but I'm glad I didn't pay retail price!

great experience, good price, good length

The tour was great, though we didn't see any whales (can't blame them). However, we did see a ton of dolphins (two species), one of the groups was a megapod with hundreds in all directions. They were swimming with the boat and doing tricks without any fish or anything else from the boat. All natural. The naturalist was very informative and nice and the captain was great at spotting animals. The boat wasn't crowded and the length of the tour was not too long and not too short. The tickets were also moderately priced.

Great day of fishing!
Fri, Jul 10  12:00 PM Sarge7 Male 30-39 Local Group of Friends
The captain and deck hands did a great job of taking care of us from start to finish. There was a wide variety of snacks and drinks available at reasonable prices. The deck hands were patient and very helpful throughout the afternoon. The live sardines were quite large and difficult to deal with. We did not get hardly any bites with that bait. Smaller sardines or maybe even anchovies would have helped us get more bites. We waited an extra hour to be first in line for the boat to get a good spot. Then we had to rotate around twice during the trip and lost our preferred spots. We would have preferred not to have to rotate since we waited extra to get our preferred spot on the rail. Overall we had a great time and would do it again.

As this was the first time we ever tried going on a fishing trip like this one, our experience were very good. The staff both in the shop and on the boat were great. Very helpful with everything. Unfortunately we didn't catch a lot of fish, but we still had a great time.

Lots of fun and a great show

Maybe it was just a lucky day for us, but within a half-hour of leaving the dock we happened upon two blue whales and followed them around for the better part of two hours as they dived and re-surfaced. The Captain did an excellent job of tracking them. On our way back to port we took a loop through a school of dolphins who raced along with the boat, jumping out of the water as they swam along. It was quite a thrill.

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE
Tue, Jul 7  5:00 PM SMSTEINBE Male 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
The Blue Whale watching cruise far exceeded our expectations. The staff was friendly and knowledgable and imparted just the right info at just the right time. The boat was clean and comfortable, the weather was fantastic, the wildlife cooperated as if trained to do so. The Common Dolphins were there to see in incredible #'s and swam with the boat, performing for us as if trained to do so. Then the HIGHLIGHT of our cruise appeared, A couple of Blue Whales , which we sighted numerous times as they surfaced , swam and dove and reappeared several times to our surprise and enjoyment. THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE WAS PHENOMINAL !! THANK YOU DANA WHARF FOR AN EXPERIENCE MY WIFE AND I WILL NEVER FORGET !! Scott & Danielle Steinberg.

I am local to Dana Point area and have been thinking about visiting the whale watch cruise for quite sometime, until recently. My in-laws were visiting us from abroad and I decided this trip would be cool one. Yes in deed, it turned out to be very nice trip after all. Since we went on weekday, there wasn't much crowd in the boat(at 15-20). The captain took us to the area where whale sightings have been reported that day. On the way there, we saw thousands of dolphins and its really cool to watch them show-off their skills in front of the crusie. Captain was very well knowledgeble on the whale location and was quick in turning the boat around to get closer to the whales. We spotted about 6 whales that dy in a span 0f 45 minutes. Great time and very relaxed atmosphere. Will surely take my brother and family from the east coase, again in August.

I took my grandson on the 1/2 day fishing trip, which was the first time either of us had been open water fishing. While neither of us caught any "keepers" during our outing, we had a great time, and we highly recommend the trip.
