Twilight Fishing highly reco. but not w/Dana Wharf
Sat, Jul 18  5:30 PM mooyeado Male 30-39 Local Group of Friends
Twilight fishing is great, however, I will not bring friends again to Dana Wharf. This was like my sixth time of bringing friends (in groups) and all but one time I and they came home with nothing. I had 5 people with me this time, and when everyone was catching fish they decided to move to another spot because most were smaller. I had 4 other people that were gonna come but couldn't make it--thank God. Well, we didn't get anymore bites the rest of the night--even after 2 more moves. We should have stayed where we were catching fish. I know you can't catch fish every time, but this isn't the first trip that we were catching fish and they decided to move. Aside from occassionally using the benefits of Kids Club, I probably wont use Dana Wharf again. I've had sucky experiences with about 30 different friends I've taken to Dana Wharf, including a bunch of friends for my brother's bachelor party night. Tooo disappointing.

Great day of fishing!
Fri, Jul 10  12:00 PM Sarge7 Male 30-39 Local Group of Friends
The captain and deck hands did a great job of taking care of us from start to finish. There was a wide variety of snacks and drinks available at reasonable prices. The deck hands were patient and very helpful throughout the afternoon. The live sardines were quite large and difficult to deal with. We did not get hardly any bites with that bait. Smaller sardines or maybe even anchovies would have helped us get more bites. We waited an extra hour to be first in line for the boat to get a good spot. Then we had to rotate around twice during the trip and lost our preferred spots. We would have preferred not to have to rotate since we waited extra to get our preferred spot on the rail. Overall we had a great time and would do it again.

Small boat....not much help....overcrowded
Tue, Jul 7  10:00 AM SoCalGirly Female 30-39 Local Group of Friends
This was not a great experience. There were too many people on the boat. It was shoulder to shoulder. There was not much help from the deck hands if any. Someone stole my fish out of my bag. The boat was small. The cook was the nicest employee and was really helpful. Other than him, it was not a good trip.

Great Father Son Time
Mon, Jun 29  6:30 AM joeymv Male 50-59 Local Group of Friends
My son and I had not been fishing in years. This was great fun. Caught fish without most of the work and hassle of clean and unhooking them. It was also a beautiful day on the water. The crew was on their toes helping everyone and we had absolutely no issues. Next time we are going out on the 3/4 day boat. The half was too short.

We were given this fishing trip as a Father's Day present. My son-in-law and I had a great time, this was a first for him. Next time we will do the all day trip!

Twilight

The fish were not biting but that happens sometimes- the crew, however, was determined to get us to a place that they were biting and they were helpful when it came to bagging fish and tying on hooks and sinkers- the only complaint is that I wish the boats were nonsmoking my wife has asthma and the smoke made light headed and sick-

Slow-paced, but educational
Tue, Jun 23  1:00 PM jhaberer Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
We enjoyed the trip, but it is definitely an "eco-tour" as opposed to a "good times tour." The tour took us into a pod of dolphins, which were really fun to watch, then the captain spotted a HUGE blue whale and we hung out near the whale and watched it breach and dive, breach and dive, breach and dive (you get the picture...) It was amazing, but 45 min. watching one whale, all the while bobbing in the swells, was a bit much. The little girl next to me "lost her lunch" overboard. Personally, I would have preferred moving on after seeing the whale for a short while (you can only see a tiny portion of the whale's back) and finding some more dolphins. They seem to want to entertain you! Anyway, if you have whale enthusiasts, go on this tour. If you are just looking for a fun ride or if you have a tendency toward sea-sickness, I'd not advise it.

fun and informative

I've lived in Southern California most of my adult life, yet learned things about local sealife that I'd never heard. We saw more dolphins than I could imagine, and more whales than I was expecting or hoping for. The captain was very experienced and informative. I plan on taking my grandson this week.

Great Afternoon!!
Sat, Jun 20  12:00 PM BOB1946 Male 60-69 Local Group of Friends
Had a very enjoyable afternoon of fishing and the deckhands were very helpful. If you got hung up, they would help you get free. And if you broke a line they would get you re-rigged and fishing again. When you caught a fish, they would help you get it un-hooked and measure it to see if it was a keeper, if not they would throw it back or if it was, put in your sack. It was also nice that they would clean and bag your fish as we returned to port. All in all, a very enjoyable afernoon of fishing. Bob Goodman Banning, CA

Blue whale-June 14
Sun, Jun 14  5:00 PM JimBlumthal Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
A great time. Spent about 30 minutes watching the blue whale we found-then headed back and watched about 100 dolphins. Good boat and informative captain. This was the evening cruise which was the determining factor for us using this seller.

Fine for locals with their own tackle
Sat, Jun 13  12:00 PM jroush Male 30-39 Unspecified Group of Friends
We participated in the 1/2 trip from 12-5pm and unfortuanetly it was an uneventful day. We had a group of about 9 in our party out of 25 total on the boat and the fishing was very poor. The boat seemed to cater to the everyday locals that had special tackle that allowed them to fish near the surface in the large kelp beds we were parked next too. The 3 fish that were caught (Small bass) in the 5 hour trip were caught by these locals using their specialized tackle. The other 95% of the boat was using pole/tackle rentals and forced to fish off the bottom catching absolutely nothing. At least we got 5 hours of sun.

Wish it was longer....

Wish the trip was longer than 2 hours! Had a great time and saw 2 whales. Would love to go on a longer trip the next time and hope to see dolphins as well.

Lackluster, Avoid 1/2 Day Trip
Sat, May 30  6:30 AM austini Male 20-29 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
I am an avid fisherman from the SF Bay Area. I own a fishing boat and am out on the bay at least once a week. I was attending a friends wedding in SoCal and tried to fit in a fishing trip. I've been on this trip two times. The first time we caught many fish, but the crew was pompous and distant. To avoid that experience, I tried to plan a trip out of San Diego but time constraints necessitated we leave from Dana Harbor again. This time the crew was great, but fishing was terrible (not their fault). The captain drove around the coast for over an hour "scouting" for bass. On a 1/2 day trip it’s just not worth the time (they are in the kelp beds!). I don't know about the longer trips (I hope they are better), but my recommendation is to avoid the half day trip. I've been disappointed twice.
