Great trip - saw whales and dolphins

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Dana Wharf whale-watching trip. The captain went out of his way to make certain we saw both whales and dolphins. When he located a large pod of whales, he kept the boat with them, giving those on board ample time to watch and take photos. He brought us right to the edge of the pod, so that the dolphin were literally beside and under the boat. Later he spotted two Minke whales, an unusual species for southern California. One of them breached four times, a rare occurrence, but great for photos. On the return trip, the captain pointed out a grey whale to us. He attempted to bring the boat to where the whale might breach, but the whale stayed submerged. The captain kept the boat out at sea an extra half hour in hopes we would see more grey whales. We were thrilled to see the whales that we did. It was clear the Dana Point crew wants their passengers to have a good experience. We did.

I went on this trip with my 12 year old son and had a great time. The crew was excellent and even though the fishing was a little slow they tried to put us on the fish and were great with all the passengers. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone who wants to learn how to fish or have children learning to fish, the crew was very helpful and patient with anyone who needed help. Thanks to the Captain and crew of the Reel Fun; we will definitely be back

Great whale watching experience

I have never been whale watching before. I didn't think that we would see much. Maybe some dolphins and sea lions and possibly a whale's tail in the distance. I was totally amazed by how much we saw. We saw several whales. One even jumped completely out of the water in front of the boat and breached a couple more times. The boat captain was very respectful of the whales. He got us close enough to see, but not too close so we wouldn't put stress on them. We also saw a huge pod of dolphins. There must have been a thousand of them. We got great footage of them surfing in the wake of the boat. Overall a great experience.

Gorgeous day, light swell, informative Captain. We were not out of the harbor more than ten minutes before we spotted our first gray whale dipping peacefully in and out of the surf about fifty feet from our bow. Unfortunately, due to a medical emergency on board, we had to return to port about an hour into the two hour excursion. However, the Captain graciously took us right back out, which turned into the highlight of the excursion. We immediately headed for a cluster of boats and caught up with another gray whale surrounded by common dolphins as they romped and played together to our visual delight. Great day, great hosts, highly recommended.

The boat was on time, staff was polite and the captain shared valuable information during the trip. We saw a lot of marine life, to include a whale! the boat was large, clean and spacious. food and drink were on board; reasonable restroom set up. I would definitely do this again, and recommend it to friends/families.

We took the 2 hour boat trip and it was so nice it didn't seem that long out on the water. So exciting that we actually viewed a whale. The entire boat was caught up in the moment that we all exclaimed "there it is" each time the whale surfaced. I wish we would have been able to come upon a group of whales but it was still an experience to remember.

Years ago I had a boat in Dana Harbor and went out to see the whales. This trip far surpassed that. My wife had never seen the whales even though we just got back from a 12 day cruise in the Sea of Cortez. The speaker had lots of really good information and by picking up the North bound whales down South by Cotton's Point and following them all the way North of the marina we really had a good opportunity to observe the whales behavior. Excellent adventure!

Rough weather, but Cpt Jack found whales!
Sat, Mar 1  8:00 AM rodsteel Male 40-49 Local Family With Children
It was raining and rough weather to start. We weren't sure they would go out in the rain, but they had a full ship, so they went! It was fun, and wet (mostly due to rain). Water was choppy, but cant blame that on the sea men. They did a great job teaching about whales and their migration routes. We did see a few groups of greys, and our Capt got us to a group that were doing fluke (tail) breaches! That was awesome to see. My girls (13 & 16) LOVED it and would love to go again... when it's warmer and dry! No dolphins on our trip. :(
