tangled mess/ "over qualified" captain
Tue, Aug 19, 08   10:00 AM Joeyo1 Male 20-29 Local Unspecified
First off , the tangled mess was especially frustrating. To add to that no one knew what do do in the event of a tangled mess besides the deckhand. Second , the capatain of the "Clemente" drove us away from a spot where the the fish could be seen from the deck. Some people were even hooked up as we were pulling away. We then drove to a second spot that was right near the barges parked just south of the San Clemente Pier. That spot was horrible. No bites , nibbles , nothing , by anyone that i could see. We then drove to a third spot that was just as bad as the previously mentioned one. Then , to top off the frustration , the over qualified captain (I'm saying that very saurcasticly) drove us back to the original spot where we then fished for about 15-20 min. or so then called it a day and drove back to port. Idon't recomend the 1/2 dat trip to anyone that likes to fish. And I won't be giving them any more of my business or recomending them to my friends / family.

Too Crowded on Tuesdays

The price was great. The fishing wasn't good on the day I went. I only caught two tiny Sculpin. The boat was way too crowded. I would not suggest going on 1/2 price Tuesdays.

Slow Fishing, but Good Times

I went out on the slowest day I've ever seen, but I still had a good time. Dana Wharf generously gave 10% off people's next trip due to the slow fishing, which they didn't need to do, but was definitely appreciated. The deck hands were friendly, knowledgeable, and patient.

This trip was with my son and his son. All were first timers on a commercial sport fishing boat. We rented poles. It seems the most success by others was with spoons or lures. The live anchovies were mainly eaten by the seals and pelicans. A suggestion to those renting equipment that maybe different types of bait (lures, etc.) might increase the catching would be appreciated. After all, persons renting equipment must be novices otherwise they would already have what is needed. The boat was fine, very clean and the galley and prepared breakfast sandwiches were very good and reasonably priced, which is appreciated. We enjoyed the experience and will do it again. But first I will need to get my own lures etc. The crew was fine and provided help when asked.

Our Experience

My wife and I had a great time on the Dana Pride! The crew was exceptional. We were treated very nicely. We were impressed by the boat being very clean. The bathrooms were spacious, private, and clean. The crew scrubbed the boat immediately, after the expedition. Even the outside of the boat! This was a first time fishing trip for my wife, and she had a lot of fun! Again, the crew, catered to our every need, and we recommend the Dana Pride for all ages. We went in the morning, 1/2 day, and it was very pleasant. Thank you to the crew on the boat, great bunch of guys! Mr. Norman Negrete

Don't call it a "whale watching" cruise
Sat, Aug 16, 08   4:30 PM jcvsfilms Male 30-39 Local Couple on a Date
It was supposed to be a "whale watching" cruise, but we didn't see any whales. We saw dolphins, but they don't justify the $30 price tag. We should have gotten a refund, in my opinion.

Disappointing

On the basis of earlier reviews, we expected to see quite a few animals but in the event all we saw after one and a half hour were some common dolfins.Clearly, this is not a good season to go on this tour.

Fun if not so crowded.

The trip was great, the crew was wonderful. The boat seemed small but maybe it's because it was very crowded. The fishing was good, it could have been great if not for all the line tangles that completely overwhelm the crew. I took my wife and my 11yr old twins and as can probably emagine i spent all of my time untangling them from everyone that got tangled with them. Other them that it was a really good and fun day.

Wrong day wrong time for fishing
Tue, Aug 12, 08   10:00 AM JOHNHANE Male 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
The discount Tuesday overwelmed the crew a bit. If you rent a pole, as a out of townner, try and get something you can cast a spoon with and buy a sppon, no one did anything with the cut or live bait, but the sppons did real well.

We had fun

I decided to take a day off from work to try out the half-off deal on Tuesdays. This was our first fishing trip ever and we had fun though it would have been much more fun if we caught some fish. Crew members were friendly and helpful showing us how to use the fishing rods and hooking up the baits (about 4-inch long fish). I would definitely recommend first-timers to try it out.

An enjoyable experience

The cruise was a great. We saw a Blue whale and her calf, a Fin whale, and sea lions. The captain did a nice job of keeping the ship out of the glare while we watched the whales take thier breaths. I would suggest being on the upper deck the view might be better. However, highly enjoyable anywhere on the ship. If you are on the fence than get off it and go already, it is a great time.
