Very Crowded no enough help
Tue, Jun 17, 08   10:00 AM Sorcha1 Female 50-59 Local Family With Children
I have been taking these trips for several years and I do have to say that is was not one of my favorites. The boat was too crowded so crowded that people had no spots to fish and the deckhands had to make people move to allow others to fish. On many trips the captain has the people on the boat move around so everyone can fish in different parts of the boat this did not happen until two of us were overheard talking about it and then it was only one movement. Then one of the deckhands stood over the bait tank constantly chumming the water and hitting me in the head with fish! My son helped several people with their fish because he did not get down and help them with tangled lines and bringing in fish. I am careful what I bring on the boat because I know the rules, however there were people that brought coolers with beer in them and the people that were smoking was awful. It seemed like there were not enough deck hands to handle the numbers. I am not sure that I want to try this again anytime soon unless I go on a different day.

Fishing and Fun
Sat, Jun 14, 08   12:00 PM johnwmilton Male 50-59 Local Family With Children
It is not exactly deep sea fishing but still a lot of fun. We mostly fished in waters between 30-50 feet deep. Most of the fish caught were bottom feeders. Not a lot of keepers. It is a great way to spend quality time with your family with a minimum of work on your own part. The helpers on the boat were available to do most of the hard work. However, baiting the hook with a live sardine was a challenge. They did have pieces of squid which made it easier for the squeemish. A lot of standing up. Plus, the boat did not have a lot of room to walk around so you are pretty much stuck in one place. Overall it was a lot of fun and a great way to see the coast line of California.

Tremendous - Highly Recommend!

We (along with the crew) started the evening not sure of what we would find. Quickly we found a large group of Bottlenose Dolphins. Quickly behind them we found some Risso's Dolphins. Another even bigger group of Bottlenose Dolphins played and even jumped in unison in front of the bow! Then, the best - a Blue Whale! We got to watch it come up and dive several times. The crew was even amazed - the first of the year! Then we briefly saw a smaller whale - the Minke? It was such an incredibly beautiful evening - coming back in with the sunset and having seen the beauty we had...would do it again in a heartbeat!

Everyone caught fish! It was a good season opener. Somehow got a Thresher Shark aboard which was divvied out in big chunks. Cool trip!

The boat was old, hardly any passangers. Only found out there that the whale watching season was over. Website of whale watching company is misleading. Captain did not say anything that he will making an effort to spot whales, in contrast with another whalewatching experience from Monterey Bay last year. There the captain and staff was zigzagging the area for us, and made an honest effort that we get our money's worth. No whales there either, but at least we knew that everything was done what humanly possible. It would have been much better to buy the ticket on site, that way I could have used the local coupons for discounts. Since I preapid the tour, that option was lost. Overall the experience was very negative. Cannot recommend it to anybody. Received $10.00 discount for future trips, which I will not use, since I am a tourist from Canada, and will not come back to this area anytime soon.

Poor Winter-type fishing

Just hit a bad day, I guess. I usually have good luck with Dana Wharf Sportfishing, but this day was bad - only a couple of sculpin caught for the whole boat, and my group caught one small rockfish between the four of us. Frustrating morning all around.

Fun cruise of Dana Point Harbor

Even though we took our trip in late April and no whales were to be found, we enjoyed our 2 hour trip. The 2 man crew was friendly and pointed out a pod of dolphin and brought our boat to the middle of them so we could enjoy their antics close at hand. It was breathtaking to observe the dolphin in their natural environment, enjoying themselves. We ventured out a little further along the coast to try and spot any whales, but no luck. On the way back to shore we passed harbor seals sunning themselves on a bobbing buoy. Very affordable good time for anyone that might only have a short time in the area.

Specially in California, nice sunny day on the oceanside will never forget. All the services by Zerve well scheduled on time and the narrator on the boat was excellent too. We had very good time and had fun. I will recommand if you stay one night in the resort by the sea that added great value for our trip. Thank you Zerve!!!

Not too satisfied

The trip was supposed to be a 2 hour trip. The boat was late coming in because the group before us found dolphins. That was understandable. But as a result, we were only out for 1 1/2 hours instead of 2. And we didn't get to see whales or dolphins! I understand that these things are unpredictable, but it would have been nice to get the full 2 hour opportunity to find these marine mammals! The boat could have used a few more places to sit comfortably. I was with my 80 year old aunt and she was a little uncomfortable. It was a beautiful day and the boat was really steady.

We went on a whale watching boat. We saw sea lions. No whales. We left on time and returned on time. Food and drinks may be purchased on the boat. Bring small money. We did not see any whales. We were given a free ticket for the whale watching boat to be used at a later time.

Even though we didn't see any whales or dolphins on the morning that I went, it was a beautiful and relaxing day out on the water. I met a lot of nice people. At the end of the cruise, we all got a ticket to come back again, since we didn't see any whales. I would go again whether I saw any or not. Having owned a boat before when I lived out here, I do know that you can see dolphins and whales and sea lions during certain times of the year. We almost always saw dolphins on our way to Catalina. They used to play in the wake our our boat. They are such a joy to see when they are around, but it's not something you can predict, only hope for. Either way, whether you see them or not, you will enjoy being out on the water for a relaxing day trip. I would go out every day if I had the time. I will be back again soon! Just be sure to bring your camera's or video cam's.

I was not a happy fisherman!!
Thu, Apr 17, 08   10:00 AM DianaOakley Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
Beginning with front desk to "sign in" and get my tickets...find out info and purchase fishing licenses/rods and tackle.........."gentleman was unfriendly and rude........answers to queries were curt and not well explained ! Boat crew was preoccupied and not at all helpful....we were repeatedly asked for our "number"...and we were NEVER told our "number"!! Having fished many times..I KNOW they are not always "biting" so NO complaint about that............but bait was not easily accessed.......and there was no contact with crew except for the fellow running the 'galley.' I would not go on this excursion again..

Went with my daughter for her 18th birthday father/daughter date. It was great being together just the 2 of us. The boat was spacious, comfortable, and crew very professional. The burgers were excellent and the whales cooperated too!. We saw a mother gray with her baby right outside the harbor entrance! We will make this an annual event! Two hours is just right.

We Didn't Catch Any Fish, However........
Sat, Apr 5, 08   12:00 PM MARCYFALLER Female 50-59 Local Group of Friends
We had a GREAT time!!! I've been out fishing in Balboa Hated it, everything about it!! The person on the phone, the boat, the crew and I couldn't understand a word that they were saying on the speaker on the boat. The crew was so rude out of Balboa I swore I'd never go back and I did'nt!! Through a friend I started fishing in Marina Del Rey, which I absolutly LOVED!!! However this trip because I was taking other people from work it was too far to go, so someone suggested Dana Point!! From the first person I talked to on the phone to the end of the day was very enjoyable!!! The person at the ticket counter was very friendly and helpful. The crew on board was very helpful and friendly, they came around all the time and helped. I Love being on the boat anyway, so not catching any fish was disapointing, but the Captain and Crew are not at fault. I think the most important things about fishing is to make it fun and enjoyable as possible, and the Captain and Crew did just that!!! They all apologized over and over for not catching any fish, which said a lot, that they really cared!! The Captain talked on the speaker about a lot of things and I could understand him and the Crew (along with the Captain) actually talked to us!! I would go again for sure!! This summer if I can get them together we would like to charter one of your boats for our firm!!! Looks like I have found a new home, I go fishing quite often (usually by myself) and I will definitely be back to visit you again and I wouldn't even bat an eye about going alone!!! Thank You So Much for making our trip so enjoyable. The two other people that I went with had never gone deep sea fishing and on the boat they were both talking about next time. When I arrived at work on Monday they thanked me for inviting them along and they could hardly wait till the next time!!! Good On YOU!!! Please give a special thanks to the Captain and Crew and please tell the kid that got his wisdom teeth removed that I hope he's feeling better!!! Thank you again so very, very much!!! Marcy Faller
