Great Birthday Gift...Beautiful Day!
Sat, Mar 8, 08   11:00 AM marksglover Female 50-59 Local Family With Children
My husband & daughter took me on the whale watching cruise as a surprise b'day gift. It truly was a gift I will always remember. We did not get to see any whales that day; however, it was worth the trip just to see the thousands of dolphins we were able to witness in their natural habitat! We found 2 different pods of dolphins & I will never forget the sight of the ocean literally filled with them swimming, jumping & coming up along side the boat! To make the trip even better, it was a beautiful day temp-wise...sunny, clear & warm! Then we saw some sea lions sunning on top of a buoy on the way back in to the harbor. Great day had by all!

Whale Watching
Fri, Mar 7, 08   2:00 PM dlboomr56 Female 50-59 Local Couple on a Date
We have done this event before and this is the first time we didn't see any whales. We were disappointed as it is a lot more expensive than when we went a few years ago. We most likely won't do this again. The people who ran the boat were most friendly and helpful. Very nice.

a whale of a good time

four of us found it a delightful day to cruise and look for whales. We only found a pod of dolphin numbering over 1000, and the captain made sure we got to see them all. Crew was great, opening the galley for a late lunch. Nice trip even without a whale sighting. We'll do this again.

Dolphins Rule!
Mon, Mar 3, 08   12:00 PM MikeandFran Female 50-59 Local Family With Children
We did not see any whales on this excursion, however, we came into a huge pod of dolphins and the excitement was electrifying! We had our 4 year old grandson with us for the day and he squealed with delight at the sights and sounds of the dolphins jumping, swimming, surfing and just playing all around the boat. The captain played along too by making a wake for them to surf in! It was a memorable day! Thanks, Mike and Fran Edeler

A very enjoyable adventure.

Although we didn't see any whales, we saw an enormous pod of common dolphins. There were literally hundreds of dolphins around the boat for nealry an hour and they were very entertaining. The captain provided an adequate, but brief discussion of the common dolphins' range, etc. In light of the fact that we didn't see any whales, it would have been nice if the captain had filled in some of the dead time with more description of the dolphins, the whales that we came to see, and the history of Dana Point and Dana harbor.

whale watching boat tour - marginal at best
Sun, Mar 2, 08   1:00 PM jafitzgerald Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
it was my understanding that this is the time of whale observing. with modern means of sharing information, i feel the company was pretty sure we wouldn't see any whales, but they were happy to take our money and give us a two hour boat trip. i was most disappointed and would not recommend the boat ride. we saw more sea life activity from the balcony of our hotel than we did from the boat.

A lovely day

We didn't see whales on this trip but we saw a pod of dolphins that were very entertaining. I got a lot of good photos. The weather was perfect but DO follow the recommendations to wear several layers of clothing. It was cold enough to need two jackets and a hood but we were in our tee shirts later that day. Also, consider taking Dramamine before you go. The up and down of the boat is just enough to make you a little queasy.

NIce cruise but no whales
Fri, Feb 29, 08   4:00 PM karriexx Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
I guess it doesn't happen that often, in fact, the boat before us (2pm sailing) saw a humpback, but unfortunately we didn't see anything-not even dolphins, which we were told are always around. Instead we had a nice cruise. The ship is clean and the crew is efficient. They are very prompt leaving and returning. Upon returning we did receive a coupon for a free cruise-which does not expire-so that was a plus. Cost was affordable and for 2 hours it really doesn't cut into your vacation time that much.

I TRY TO GO EVERY YEAR AND ALWAYS ENJOY IT. THE BOAT RIDE IS ENJOYABLE AND I HAVE NEVER FAILED TO SEE A WHALE THOUGH THIS YEAR IT DID TAKE A WHILE TO FIND ONE. WE FINALLY DID. WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE. THEY ARE A SIGHT TO SEE.

Wonderful Time!
Tue, Feb 26, 08   12:00 PM touristgirl Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
After two weeks of stormy, cold weather, and very rough seas the skies were clear, temperatures were in the low 70s and the Pacific was like glass! After much anticipation, we departed the harbor in search of sea life and we were not disappointed! A lone seal was in the harbor, pelicans were on the jetty and not long after leaving port, we spotted the first of several gray whales. We followed the whales up the coastline until it was time to turn back. Several Pacific Bottlenosed Dolphis were sited as was lone sea lion sunning himself on a bouy. We had a FABULOUS time and will go out again if we're ever in California!

Thanks to the Captain and the crew, the trip was safe and fun. We saw the whales backs but didn't get to see their tails coming out of the water. It was calm weather, calm waters, and most everyone had fun.

It was a perfect day weather wise and we took the first trip out in the morning so the sea was calm. Although we had been looking forward to seeing the whales and did not, we were fortunate to see a very large pod of Common Dolphin which made the trip worth while. I would recommend the experience.

Grey whale season in a lull
Sat, Feb 23, 08   10:00 AM MWright Female 50-59 International Tourist(s) Individual
Captain did report that the grey whales were less frequent in that week in February, but only when we finally saw whales after looking for 1 and a half hours. In fact, they were closer in to shore and sailboats surrounded them, preventing us from getting closer. Their return to the north apparently starts in a weeks' time, so I just mistimed my visit.

Basically a cattle boat with little interaction with staff. Ordinary, nothing bad or really good. Nice boat ride. You may want to spend more money and go with someone who has a better feel for whales.

Tuesday Whale Watching
Tue, Feb 19, 08   10:00 AM stevenspence Male 50-59 Local Family With Children
I'd recomend the Tuesday half price special as the boat had maybe 40 people on it. Our Feb 19th scheduled 10:00 am departure actually left about 10:10, perhaps they were waiting to see if anyone else would show up. They ask you to be dockside a 1/2 hour before the scheduled departure, and free parking is more than adequate. The staff on the boat was friendly and talked about the marine life we happened to see. The trip lasted about 1:45 long and was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. This is my third whale watching trip and I've yet to see a whale but did see many dolphin and sea lions. The company offers a guarrantee that if you don't see any dolphins or whales you'll get another trip voucher ... trust me, you'll always see dolphins, probably not whales but always dolphins! There is an indoor galley with seating on board in case your hungry or thirsty and I noted that they sell beer and "adult beverages" too. There are resrooms onboard. I would definitly bring a wind breaker or coat with a hood especially if you plan to travel during the winter months and want to watch from the bow (front) of the boat. Camera's are a must and having a pair of binoculars would be a bonus. If you liked the trip, have a couple of dollars handy since they put a "tip" jar next to where you exit the boat. If you've never done something like this and will not be too disapointed if you don't see an actual whale then I say go for it and enjoy the views, atmosphere and ride. I plan on going again sometime in the future since I live locally. Who knows, maybe the fouth time will be the charm to see whales.
