catamaran whale watching cruise cut short.

I chose the last catamaran cruise scheduled for the day. Dana Warf states on their tickets that everyone should arrive 30 minutes early because each cruise departs exactly on time. Mine did not. My boat was 20 minutes late from the earlier cruise. The captain did not make up for the delay by staying out an extra 20 minutes. Instead we returned to the dock exactly on time so our cruise was cut short by 20 minutes.. which was unfortunate because at the time we turned back we were following a whale. I will not take their cruise again. I expressed my displeasure to the crew.. they told me to speak to the captain..... he was no where to be found.

I was impressed with the captain's commentary about Baileen Whales and the CA Gray Whale in particular. We spotted and trailed a Gray Whale for about an hour and the crew seemed just as excited as the passengers were. What a spectacular trip!

A pleasant way to spend a few hours on the ocean

While it would have been great to see a whale or two, I was happy to see some seals, several lazy dolphins, and a whole lot of interesting birds. The boat was clean, there was plenty of seating inside (although the best place for sightings is the outside railing), and there was a good selection of reasonably priced items in the galley. I will definitely go again!

An Alaskan Cruise was fantastic but...
Sat, Mar 6, 10   9:00 AM SavannahDawn Female 50-59 Local Individual
Everytime the Captain said he spotted whales...they were gone by the time I got to that side of the cruise ship! At Dana Point...I saw at least five whales, spraying, swimming, diving, and holding their tales above the ocean...like the whales tail charm I have had since I was sixteen from Hawaii. I will go again, and again. Rain was forcasted...not till our wonderful trip was over. You said it is calmer in the am...with my accupuncture bracelets on, I was greatful to not heave with the swells. Up and down, up and down...I haven't checked my pictures yet...I know that I got alot of seagulls wing tips...hopefully some part of a whale... I am not a morning person... I drove 80 plus miles an hour...to Dana Point, my TomTom wouldn't speak the whole way down because I uploaded it the night before, big mistake...thank God for your directions, and instructions! Having not been to the festival before... I parked at the other end of the parking lot... Thinking I had to put a ticket on my dashboard... I ran to and from the tackle shop...arriving at my car...minutes till the boat left, to find I didn't have my car keys... Thank God for my hide-a-key... Struggling to open it, I grabed my heavy stuff, (do pack light). I ran back to the tackle shop where "the bratt that gave me my ticket for the whale watching...denied having my keys"! I'll get you next time mister! In may I'll book my 4th of July Dinner /Fireworks Cruise...alone:( Everywhere I go, I tell people how exciting it was to see the Whales, Artists, and Shop owners. Everyone was so nice and friendly... "Frank Stockl", a fabulous photographer was generious enough to give me a "one of a kind Christos Picture of three yellow Umbrellas"...I almost cried, twice. The important point is...I finally saw Whales!, this also is an educational experience, as well as a fund raiser! Book your trip...maybe I will be there too. P.S. Thank you Westways Magazine for publishing the article on the Dana Point Whale Watching Festival, It's a good thing I brought reading material into dad's former office... I find the most interesting articles... whilest on the toilet.

when i went whale watching, i saw some sea lions hanging out and basking in the sun. i took some pictures and we went deeper into the water. Later, we saw some common dolphins playing in the water. i tried to take some pictures, but they were too fast. i managed to take some pictures of them jumping. we didnt see a whale though, so we headed back to the docks. on our way back, we saw more dolphins. we got to the docks.

Great Crew, they worked hard on an off night

We tried a new area in deeper water and the squid just weren't to be found that night. We were out a couple of hours longer than planned, but that just proves how hard these guys were willing to work to try to find some kind of action. I get in the area once in awhile for work and I'll be giving these guys another go. Polite and courteous crew. Just wasn't our night.

Squid kinda slow now

The squid were not biting as hard as other years. I like the $25 price for the squid only boats. No screwing around with other fish. Just go get the squid and come home. I'll try again if the squid are still around.

Fun day at sea even without whales

We had a beautiful warm and sunny day to sail. Even though we did not see any whales we did see dolphins and sea lions. Staff was pleasant & knowledgable. Comfortable boat. One woman had a 3 year old and I wouldn't recommend for that young age group - she spent the time running around the boat after him! He didn't have the patience to keep looking out for the whales!

The day of the Dolphins!
Sun, Dec 20, 09   12:00 PM Lindash Female 40-49 Local Individual
The day was overcast and the ocean was calm and glassy when we took off from Dana Point on our Whale watching adventure on 12/20/09. I took the 12:00 to 2:00 tour and we headed north looking for Gray Whales, but it's a little early in their migration season and we didn't come across any whales or even any Dolphins. I was given a Whale check and figured I would stay on for the 2:00 to 4:00 tour because as we were comming into the harbor they had spotted Dolphin activity in the distance. As we headed out on the 2:00 to 4:00 tour we saw some In-Shore Bottlenose Dophins right away. Then we headed out further to a pod of Pacific White-Sided Dolphins that were very playful and would bow ride. They were very lovely with distinct dark gray and white markings. We continued on and saw a large pod of Risso's Dolphins and also some Off-Shore Bottlenose Dolphins. Apparently all were feeding on Giant Squid in the ocean. Everywhere you looked there were Dolphins. What a contrast to my earlier tour where we didn't see a thing. The captain said that yesterday they were in the direction we had headed this morning, but had moved South. I was very glad I had stayed on for the 2nd tour and was able to witness all the Dolphin activity. You never know what to expect in our vast ocean, it's either filled with life or empty and that can be all in the same day.
