Great Trip (Second Time)
Tue, Jan 6, 09   10:00 AM PKalczynski Unspecified 30-39 Local Family Without Children
This is the second time we chose Dana Wharf and, again, we had a great time. Apart from the sea lions and hundreds of common dolphins, we observed a pair of California gray whales swimming South. The crew is very knowledgeable and they are working really diligently to find whales. We went on this trip last January (with kids) and found whales, too. Highly recommended. BTW If you are going on an early (10am) trip bring your coffee. Most coffee shops are closed and the one that is open charges almost $4 for a cup of so-so coffee.

Interesting Experience
Tue, Jan 6, 09   10:00 AM captainjosh Male Under 20 Local Group of Friends
All in all, an interesting experience. For me, it was my first time fishing, so it was exciting to learn how to fish and to catch my first fish. Fishing was in general a bit slow, but that was probably due to factors beyond the crew's control, such as the season, the reality of over-fishing, and the necessary relative proximity to shore. The crew was generally quite helpful, assisting customers in taking in and preparing their caught fish and informing customers about the various fish they caught. It was also good to know that they used radar to detect schools of fish so as to enhance the chances that we could catch some. One note: if you happen to catch any mackerel, which is fairly likely since they are quite a common fish, they will most likely tel you that it is a no-good fish. However, there are plenty of recipes online of how best to cook mackerel and I must say, it is actually a very tasty fish, and fairly healthy as well! High in Protein and Omega 3 fatty acids. So keep any mackerel you may catch!

Great excursion!
Sat, Jan 3, 09   2:00 PM Hatlie Female Unspecified Local Family With Children
Our group consisted of a family of ten: grandparents, parents, kids aged from 3 years to 9 years. Part of the group was visiting from Germany. It was a beautiful, albeit chilly, day in January 2009. Since this was a "fringe" migration time, we didn't expect to see many whales. We didn't see a one, but we did see hundreds of playful dolphins, which is always a hoot. We also saw sea lions in the water and lounging on buoys. Great! On our way to the whalewatching site, we were making our way from Manhattan Beach, and were put behind schedule (potty stop for little guys) and BARELY made it to the wharf on time. We were soooo concerned, I called while we were still on the freeway, and the office called us back to check on our progress as we made our way into the parking lot. Tense time, but we made it. The staff and crew were super friendly, upbeat, smiley - which we needed right about then - and made it a fun excursion. The captain was informative about the sea life, the galley was open and welcoming, and all were helpful. Not many on board this time of year, and we were happy to be part of it! Very comfortable boat. We recommend it!

where are the whales

The trip itself was fun, there were a lot of dolphins & some sea lions. No mention of whales or of them being absent.. Just found ourselves back at the dock. I realize that the whales won't always be around but it would have been nice to have had the captain explain this during the cruise. As the whales were the primary reason we took the trip, it was a little disappointing. The captain was very knowledgable about the dolphins and sea lions so that portion was interesting.

Zerve misrepresented tour information
Fri, Jan 2, 09   2:00 PM sunisankara Male 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
We went whale watching on Jan 2 2009. While purchasing tickets we asked Zerve if the tour had any success in spotting whales in the last couple of trips, and they confirmed that the tour had spotted whales the past few days. We then bought tickets and took the tour. The tour was good as in we saw a lot of dolphins and seals. We did not spot any whales. When I asked the tour guide about it, he said that they had not spotted any whales in the last 2 1/2 weeks. The tour itself is very engaging and you get up and close with the dolphins. You also get to see seals up and close. I am just very disappointed at how zerve duped me into purchasing the tickets in the first place.

Great Boat - But No Whales!
Thu, Jan 1, 09   12:00 PM rlovejoy Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Couple on a Date
The boat was great, very clean and the crew was nice. Unfortunately due to the dense fog, even at noon-time, no whales or dolphins were seen. The group is honoring their guarantee and as long as we don't lose our ticket we can try again in the same season with no expiration date.

Fun boat ride
Wed, Dec 31, 08   2:00 PM kandyfoster Female 50-59 Local Family With Children
We went on a whale watching trip and had a nice boat ride. We were not fortunate enough to see any whales or dolphins. We were given whale checks to come back anytime. We heard the best time is March. So, if our grandkids come visit again before April we will try again.

OK boat ride but no marine life
Wed, Dec 31, 08   2:00 PM keyoungblood Female 30-39 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
The people (at dock and on boat) were professional. We felt like the crew did their best to try to find whales or dolphins (no way to guarantee 'Mother Nature'), but we only saw 4 sea lions near the harbor. They called out that there were two dolphins spotted far away from the boat, but without binoculars you could not see anything (most people said they never saw anything either). We also later heard that "it is too early to see many whales" and we wish we would have known that upfront. Our 10-year-old was BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED in the trip overall; the adults enjoyed the second half of the boat ride, when it wasn't completely frigid (because the icy cold wind was then at our backs)! The company did issue us 'whale checks' which soothed the pockets of the adults; hopefully we can get the kiddo to give it another try when we visit again next year.

Too cold and windy for whale watching
Wed, Dec 31, 08   10:00 AM olgapinkoson Female 40-49 Local Family With Children
Two hours was 1 hr too long because it was cloudy, foggy and freezing cold, (even though I brought 2 blankets). My teenagers couldn't wait to go back because it was so cold & windy. We did see few dolphins and seals. I would recommend this trip to my friends only during the summer or spring. We got some coupons toward our next trip at the end of the tour which was nice.

Well managed logistics

The process was professional and the crew very competent While on the excursion, was told that this "really isn't the time to look for whales, that comes in a month or two" by a local who regularly liked to take the trip to study dolphins, or so he said. If that is true, I think it would be better for the company to highlight that fact.

The crew was helpful and informative. We had a perfect day. The water was calm and we received a lot of information. We didn't catch a glimpse at any whales.

It was a nice day, we didn't see any whales but saw two different kinds of dolphins. The extra money paid to book on line in advance did not seem worthwhile, but I suppose I would have felt differently if we got there and they were sold out. Despite advertising that they leave on time, the boat left 15 minutes late but returned on time so we got rooked out of 15 minutes of a two hour ride, which wasn't so nice. ALl in all we had a nice time and would recommend doing this trip

No whales and short on porpoises
Tue, Dec 30, 08   10:00 AM JSHarper Male 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
It was a terrific day in Southern California to be on the water: clear, warm, beautiful!!! The boat and staff were great! We really enjoyed a nice cruise. Sadly, no whales -- not something anyone can guarantee, of course. Then, in the final 5 minutes of the cruise -- just in time to save the refund(!) -- we happened upon a couple of porpoises. As we disembarked, the staff wished each of us a Happy New Year AND reminded us over and over again that we had seen a couple of porpoises. I wouldn't have minded so much if the boat company weren't so blatant about protecting their refund policy.

Nice day out!

Enjoyed the commentary from the captain, made it more than just a 'watching' trip. Got to see 2 diff types of dolphins, which was wonderful but wasn't lucky enough to see any whales though. Was slightly disppointed. Perhaps it's not the best time to go (end of Dec). All in all would definitely reccommend.
