Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching

Left the dock 30 minutes late. Returned 45 minutes early. Crew was lazy and unhelpful. Last stop to fish was just outside of harbor entrance, coincidently.

It was suppose to be squid frenzy but no squid to bring home.

The crew was friendly and helpful, providing information and telling us where to look. The boat was clean and comfortable. We did not see any whales or dolphins because of the recent storms but we were given passes to come back whenever we want to. I have been on this boat many times and will hoefully have many more opportunities. GREAT DAY!!!

Just going out on the water was great however the crew were wonderful and entertaining which made it even better. The weather became a little blustery but our guide and narrator was so entertaining that we didn't care. We were unable to see a whale on our trip but we found a feeding frenzy of "simple dolphins". There were probably thirty of them swimming with out boat and darting in an out of the water eating on the Krill that was present. It was an awesome reminder of this beautiful planet we live on. When I came back to land I am determined to make this a bi-weekly or at least monthly experience. To wonderful not to enjoy.

I have been wanting to take my kids whale watching for quite some time, and really loved the half off Tuesday price. Three other friends with their kids also took advantage of the price, but none of us were quite aware of how wonderful an experience this would be. Captains Tom and Larry were friendly and approachable (as were the rest of the crew) and we actually saw and followed a fin whale. We didn't have huge expectations, but the entire 2 hour adventure far superseded what we hoped to get out of it. My four year old tells everyone he comes into contact wtih all about it and can't wait to go again. Truth be told, I can't wait to go again myself.

We didn't catch much, but that's not something the crew can control obviously. Most of the deckhands were great in helping us untangle lines and unhook the fish, but one crew member almost ruined our trip. The cook, of all people, gave us sh*# because we didn't order our food together. Are we suppose to all get hungry at the same time? The cook complained that we were ordering separately and that he didn't want to keep having to go down to turn on the grill. He even yelled out sarcastic remarks so the entire boat can hear. Aside from the annoying cook, the experience was good. If I decide to come back to Dana Wharf, I may think twice about coming on board hungry.

My friends and I really enjoyed the whale watching trip. We only saw one whale but we were lucky enough to get close. There were lots of dolphins and sea lions and we were really amazed at the sight. The crew was very friendly. I definitely recommend this trip to everyone especially those who love nature.

It was a perfect day in early January. Didn't see any whales even though the crew sure tried to find some. Saw seals and tons of dolphins though. Will do it again.

Unfortunately we did not see any whales, but my friend and I still had fun. We did get to see two large pods of dolphins, one of Risso's the other of bottlenose. They surrounded us and a few were breaching, splashing each other, and splashing with their tails. It was really cool to watch. Perhaps the largest number of dolphins I've seen in one place in the wild. I would recommend the activity, but would have found it more enjoyable if we actually got to see whales.

The deep sea fishing was fun. People were constantly catching fish and, unfortunately, birds. I think a half day trip is the perfect amount of time. A full day seems like it might get boring. The crew were really helpful with whatever was needed. They did their best to make the day enjoyable for all of the people on board.

I went on this trip with six other friends. It was a clear day on December 29, 2009. We didn't see any whales, but we did see scattered groups of dolphins. The guide/ boat driver guy told us that this is the beginning of whale migration and that more of them are seen in March. Most of us wore sweaters. Sunglasses really helped block the reflection of the sun on the water. I wouldn't recommend this trip to anyone who easily gets motion or sea sickness. I got a bit of a headache but this was mostly due to someone up front smoking twice while we were at sea. I regret not complaining to the organizers about the smoker. There should be a rule against this especially with kids around.

Very enjoyable ocean cruise, saw two very large pods of dolphins and several sea lions. Nice boat, great crew.

Our family was entertaining a small group of musicians from overseas and we wanted them to experience something of our local lifestyle. It was a beautiful day and the catamaran was the perfect vessel to go out along the coast and enjoy the mist in our faces. When we finally came upon hundreds of dolphins there was great excitement among all the passengers, and our friends really enjoyed their time. Thanks for the experience.

I fish down at Dana Point jetty all the time and catch a lot more. I only caught one fish the whole time, as did my friends. For the money, it wasn't worth it.
