Not My Cup of Tea

If you enjoy being herded onto a boat and taken to a point out along the coast to stare into dark, dismal water then this is the trip for you. The day I participated it was very cold, overcast and dreary. We rode out along the coast, which took about thirty minutes and watched for a whale to appear. We did see one, although very briefly. Everyone flocked to one side of the boat to see the elusive whale and I felt as though I were in a can of sardines. We headed back to shore afterward and I must say, I was happy to get off the boat. I vowed if I ever go whale watching again, it will be in Hawaii!

Nice boat ride but no whales visible.

Nice boat ride on a nice day. No whales. Boat company gives you a complimentary ticket if no whales are seen. This ticket has no expiration date on it! Good marketing!

Captain was very negative in his talk.

I have taken this trip many times before with great pleasure. However, this captain was preoccupied talking with other ships and would tell us where the whales had come up but it was not until the very end that anyone believed that there were whales to be seen. He talked about sea lice and the killing of whales and the people on the boat were just shaking their heads. There are so many beautiful things that can be said about the whales and the dolphins and these things have been shared iin the past by other captains. We did not see one dolphin which was very unusual.

Part of the activities for the Dana Point Festival of Whales. Did it for my wife's 60th Birthday celebration. Great fun for everyone involved. Did not hear any comments that were negative. Everyone had a great time. Lots of whale sightings, dolphin encounters and sea lion viewing.

Strategic boat position to facilitate whale watchg

The crew members presented a very informative dialogue on whale history. The captain always had a good view of the whales as the boat was always pointed toward whale location. Guests gravitated to side where whales were sighted. It was not always possible for all guests to have a look at the whales. If the boat had been strategically positioned, everyone could have had a better view.

I received this trip as a birthday gift. I had been whale watching in different places 3 times before, and had never seen a whale, so I was hoping to see one this time. The captain, crew and naturalist were fabulous, very interested in our comfort and questions. They had charts and books onboard to further educate us. We had plenty of room to sit and see. All at once, there was a Gray Whale, a juvenile male, going the wrong direction! He was friendly to us and let us get closer, showed us his fluke and flipper and he lounged in the sea. He stayed near the boat for quite awhile. "Happy Birthday!" the naturalist said to me. On the way back dolphins played in the wake of the boat, we saw a Sun fish, and two other whales. Also sea lions, pelicans and all kinds of other birds. One lady took beautiful pictures and emailed them to us. This is a birthday I'll never forget!

A Whale, Sea Lions, Dolphins and Great Food

Another boat let our captain know the siting of a whale and he was able to go full speed ahead and found the whale in question. We followed it for some time. We also saw sea lions and dolphins. In addition, the food was great along with a cocktail bar. It was a beautiful sunny California day. What more can anyone ask for!

Very enjoyable

We enjoyed the whale watching. The boat was professionally maintained and run. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is that it was too crowded. Very difficult to move around on deck.

This was our first time whalewatching with Dana Wharf. It was a smaller boat than on previous trips and that was a plus. The boat was clean, the crew was friendly and informative. We didn't have to go to far out before we began to follow a whale. On the return trip we spotted 4-5 more. We all had a good time.

Whale watching in Dana Point

My friends came from Chicago and were staying in San Diego when they decided to go whale watching. I told them to come up here since it was more convenient to get tickets, get on the ship, and more pleasant surroundings. We went whale watching, and although we didn't see any whales(can't predict), we did see hundreds of dolphins, non stop. The ship was beatiful(Dana Pride), plenty of room to walk around or sit, inside or out. It was a beautiful day, the coastline was fabulous, and we got great pictures. My friends said it was an E ticket, can't get better than that.
