We were so lucky to go out for the day with such a hospitable boat crew and captain. Not only to us as passengers, but more importantly to the sea life that was presented before us. Such respect for our wildlife!
We were very lucky to watch a gray whale breach 3 times and fluke a good handful of times. The commom dolphin mega pod was spectacular as well.
A day we won't forget.
Thank you! |

best kind of learning for a kid -- and a blast

this is a fun trip. and even tho' we caught no fish that day, and it rained miserably, we still had a blast. it was really good to go on sunday for the 12:30 trip where they expect and accomodate children and beginners.
also, it was so obviously healthy for my kid to get out of the world of memorization (school, tutoring) and obligations (do your homework, eat your veggies) etc, and simply into a world of authentic, natural learning -- experiential learning -- just BEING in it.. learning to DO. such as catch anchovies from underneath, set them on a hook, how to dress for inclement weather, what to bring for food, how to stay balanced on a boat that is rocking, how to interact with strangers (other people fishing and their kids), how to tell the difference between a whale, a sea lion and a dolphin (all of which he saw).. these things are priceless, and he can't get anything like this in school. frankly, i think school SHOULD be like this.
i liked that the captain took the time to call the children down onto the boat in a separate group beforehand to give them a pre- orientation. this was neat. and his explanation was kind and patient. however, it could have been simplified. when he got into knots and how to wire the rod with weight and hook in several various configurations it was too complicated, and i think the children did not follow it (i know i didn't). but it didn't matter because his crew was helpful all day long with hooks, weights, bait, etc. In fact, i think his initial talk could simply have been limited to safety concerns and the basics of handling the rod/reel (which he did cover nicely).
when it rained, i was surprised to see we were the only 2 who had brought raincoats/slickers. everyone else was soaked and miserable (tho' no one complained). my recommendation: consider checking the weather, and bringing raincoats if rain is a possibility, as well as a backpack with extra food, sunscreen, hats/sunglasses, aspirin, sandwiches and grub, and even a towel -- whatever you need for the day. you'll be glad you did.
one more shout out to the great captain and crew -- they were a blast, quite professional, and very friendly and helpful. it was a great day, thanks guys. |

While we didn't get lucky enough to see a whale, we did see more dolphins than we could count, along with quite a few baby dolphins. My kids, ages 9 & 5, were thrilled to see the animals in the wild and can't stop talking about the experience. The staff was friendly and informative. We will definitely return. |

This is something to share with your family. My kids (6 & 2 yrs) loved watching the dolphins leap in and out the water, see the whales & watching a sea lion swim around. This was our 2nd time to go on Dana Wharf's Tour and it's been great both times. A must see! |

The weather was perfect ! It could have been cold and windy. The boat is roomy with plenty of seating if you get in line early. The Captain was informative. We followed 3 whales for about 45 minutes. The captain then took us to see a pod of Dolphins numbering 50+. This was the real show. The adults as well as the children were so excited.
It was a great experience! |

From beginning to end, the customer service was excellent. I was running a few minutes late and they were considerate enough to wait for me just a couple of minutes as I made my way through the parking lot, not only that, but as I literally got onto the boat, I had a customer service representative call me to see if I had been able to make it after all! Now that's service! Our guide was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and you can tell this is not just a job for him, but his calling in life! I and my friend had a great time, learned a lot, and got to see a fantastic whale and playful dolphins...can't wait to go back again next time! |

We were out there for around 2 hours. It was a nice and pleasant day. We only saw one grey whale going by. Seeing a grey whale surface and then dive down showing off its beautiful fluke, was spectacular. But somehow I expected more out of this short trip, I was hoping to see more whales, maybe some species of dolphins but for me , personally, after the 15 minutes of watching the beautiful whale, the trip was kinda flat. Not much else to see but the ocean. I guess its all luck, one day you see everything, the other not so much. |

The boat was great with lot's of room to move around. The crew was fabulous. The captain was great with his knowledge of wildlife and the chef made us yummy breakfast sandwiches. Everyone was kind and friendly. We got to see Common dolphins, a Grey whale, and some sea lions. I would recommend this excursion to everyone.
Thank you,

Took my girlfriend here, thought it sounded fun. We both had a blast. We were lucky enough to see a whale, but both of us agreed that even if we hadn't seen a whale that day it would have been worth it. The boat ride itself is great and the crew is friendly and knowledgeable. We are planning on returning in the summer to see the Blue Whales! |

The tour was given to us as a Christmas gift, and what a fabulous day it was! We saw a pod of gray whales with 4 members-the first and largest pod sighting of the year. On the way out, we saw Rizzo dolphins and again on the way back. The animals that were the most fun were the HUNDREDS of Common dolphins that raced to our boat, and even changed course just to bow ride. They are quite playful and everyone was thrilled.
We appreciated that the captain was not in any rush to get back to the marina.
Go!!!!!! It's an experience you'll never forget! |
