pleasant but unthrilling

We had a beautiful day for the whale watching. The day before they saw 13 whales. We saw none. The crew tried extremely hard to find some, but all we saw were three or four white fin dolphins and sea lions on the buoys. It was quite disappointing, but the boat ride was nice.

A good afternoon which delivered as advertised
Sat, Mar 27, 10   3:30 PM rjpatrick Male 40-49 International Tourist(s) Individual
We spent about 2.5 hours on the water and saw Sea Lions, Common Dolphins and three Fin Whales. Inevitably you spend a certain ammount of time waiting for something to happen but it was a nice afternoon so not a problem. Apart from the Sea Lions they are all hard to photograph though - more of a video camera than a still camera type of activity.

Half day fishing with kids
Mon, Apr 21  10:00 AM rjjump Male 50-59 Local Family With Children
Expect some frustration if you have younger kids. The half day trips pretty much sit at local kelp beds and the boat is positioned where the stern swings near the kelp. 90% of the fish will be caught from the back. The areas are over fished so the fish are small and hide in the kelp. Frequent fisherman will stake the best spots. The captain will announce a time for people to rotate but that will be half way through the trip. Most people will mill around a bit but grab spots close to where they were. So unless you are aggressive and force your way in you will not likely get a prime spot. I would do that but with my younger kids you cant as they are not good enough fisherman to handle the tight combat fishing that happens in the back. If you want to see the local coastline from a boat, have a snack and enjoy a day at sea then it is fine. If you go thinking of catching decent size fish then do something else. I have went 5 times with my small kids and always the same story 100+ fish caught but only a few legal size....and I am talking barely legal. I have not seen anything over 18" or a couple pounds ever caught.

Skunked

6:30 half day trip-Full boat, decent crew and good intentions. Just no luck. 3-4 keepers for entire boat of about 30 anglers. I caught a small white bass but had to throw it back. Crew threw out lures and hooked a bunch of barracuda near the kelp beds to keep it interesting but just no luck. I will definitely give it another chance.

great day!

the crew was nice and my whole group had a great time with all of us catching plenty of fish... we would def. do this trip again soon. Moved around to a few different spots and the captain made up for it by extending the time out there with no pressure on time.... great day on the water.

Held captive while crew gets rich cleaning squid
Sun, Jan 13, 13   5:30 PM RJaquette Male 40-49 Local Individual
You are not allowed to take your squid off the boat until the crew has charged you $3 each to do a half-hearted cleaning job on them. You can't even clean your own!?! We waited for 3.5 hours while just 2 crew members slowly cleaned the boats catch. We didn't get back until 2am. It was ridiculous. A responsible charter operation would let fishermen clean their own or put more cleaning crew on the boat. $1 is the standard cleaning fee elsewhere. We froze while they got rich. Not worth it.

It was our first time fishing from a boat and my girlfriend loved it. The crew was very helpful and they were very polite. I will definitely do it again.

Did not see any whales

It was cold and windy, saw quite a few dolphins but no whales. We were disappointed as we had family from Europe and Chicago area with us.

A wonderful experience!
Wed, Apr 9  10:00 AM riozwart Female 40-49 International Tourist(s) Family With Children
We were very lucky to cone into a large pod of Dolphins, despite heading out in fog. We were totally surrounded by hundreds of swimming jumping dolphins - truly an experience of a lifetime. The boat was immaculate. Overall great, but I did find the one staff member was rather curt for no reason. He no longer seemed to be enjoying his job. Overall it was more than we hoped for.

The crew is great -- dedicated to trying to get you to see a whale (and dolphins). Our captain even continued on to see the whale surface again, when we was supposed to be heading back to port. Great trip!
