Great fun for a family

The boat trip was fun for all 8 of us even though the weather was very cold. We only saw a few dolphins but everyone enjoyed the day. Our 5 year old and 10 year old grandchildren enjoyed doing something different and had lots of fun checking out the hot chocolate and chips, We all plan to go again. Thanks for making our trip fun.

good, but...

Liked the cruise and that we were able to see a whale within the first 20 minutes, but after that we were notified that we were heading out to see a pod of dolphins and the person who does the announcements never came back on for the next hour of the cruise. We really had no clue what was going on, if the dolphins were gone or what, or if we were heading further out or back. He finally came back on when we were in the harbor and it was obvious the cruise was over. Very cold too, so make sure you dress warm, recommend a hat!

Not Impressed

After the trip was over and we had not seen whales, I felt that I had been had. We were told that we would get a free trip if no whales or dolphins were seen. The first thing the ship did was head out and show us dolphins, which was nice, but not what we had come to see. Then the next hour was spent cruising around supposedly looking for whales. I think they knew there weren't any whales in the area at that time and rather than be truthful up front and since they obviously sell tickets each day whales or no whales, it is a bit of a hustle.

Thanks to the Captain and the crew, the trip was safe and fun. We saw the whales backs but didn't get to see their tails coming out of the water. It was calm weather, calm waters, and most everyone had fun.

Basically a cattle boat with little interaction with staff. Ordinary, nothing bad or really good. Nice boat ride. You may want to spend more money and go with someone who has a better feel for whales.

Although we only saw one whale, it was a great trip - sunny, clear, calm. I would go again just to get 2 hours out on the ocean.

The prices were actually affordable, unlike most activities of this kind. We could do this again and again, and we will. The staff were courteous and informative. They provided educational information I hadn't heard elsewhere, making it not only exciting, but educational for my daughter. The boat was uncrowded, making the experience pleasant, w/just enough people to provide pleasant company w/out being uncomfortable. The day was beautiful, not too cold. Being out on the boat was exhilerating! We saw one grey whale four times. It was amazing! They are truly incredible creatures and we got to see one in her natural habitat. Huge, fascinating animals. I feel very priveleged to have been able to participate in this experience, and will definately take my family again. A huge thank you to all the staff!!

Whale Watching Tuesday
Tue, Feb 19, 08   10:00 AM jason8096 Female 30-39 Local Family With Children
We enjoyed ourselves so much on Tuesday's 10 am Whale Watching trip. It was easy to get the tickets (though we stood in line outside first--it's inside you want to go.) The boat was the perfect size; any smaller and my two year old would not have had enough room to roam, any larger and it would have lost it's intimate feel.

Tuesday Whale Watching
Tue, Feb 19, 08   10:00 AM stevenspence Male 50-59 Local Family With Children
I'd recomend the Tuesday half price special as the boat had maybe 40 people on it. Our Feb 19th scheduled 10:00 am departure actually left about 10:10, perhaps they were waiting to see if anyone else would show up. They ask you to be dockside a 1/2 hour before the scheduled departure, and free parking is more than adequate. The staff on the boat was friendly and talked about the marine life we happened to see. The trip lasted about 1:45 long and was an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. This is my third whale watching trip and I've yet to see a whale but did see many dolphin and sea lions. The company offers a guarrantee that if you don't see any dolphins or whales you'll get another trip voucher ... trust me, you'll always see dolphins, probably not whales but always dolphins! There is an indoor galley with seating on board in case your hungry or thirsty and I noted that they sell beer and "adult beverages" too. There are resrooms onboard. I would definitly bring a wind breaker or coat with a hood especially if you plan to travel during the winter months and want to watch from the bow (front) of the boat. Camera's are a must and having a pair of binoculars would be a bonus. If you liked the trip, have a couple of dollars handy since they put a "tip" jar next to where you exit the boat. If you've never done something like this and will not be too disapointed if you don't see an actual whale then I say go for it and enjoy the views, atmosphere and ride. I plan on going again sometime in the future since I live locally. Who knows, maybe the fouth time will be the charm to see whales.

We found whales within 15 minutes or so. The boat stayed with them for the entire trip with narration from the captain. The food was good. I would reccomend this service to friends and family & I found being able to scedule online great.

Amazing to see magnificent grey whales live!

The captain of our Whale Watching trip has been doing this since 1989. He is extremely knowledgeable and I felt he still was in awe after seeing these magnificent creatures so many times. He know where to go and how to approach the whales. The crowd was wonderful and they don't overcrowd the boat. I thoroughly enjoyed the views of Dana Point and San Clemente as well. I came away with new wonder and appreciation for God's amazing creatures. Worth it!

Terrific even when the whales don't show up

We are always happy to travel with the folks from the Dana Wharf Whale Watching excursions. This was probably about our 6th trip and our first sunset cruise. The crew is friendly and knowledgeable. The ship is clean and enjoyable. This cruise was not too crowded, so there were plenty of seats below and above (I do wish they had a few more seats on the boat). We did come upon a large pod of bottle nose dolphin -- this was our first encounter with them, as we usually have seen the common dolphin. We were given much time to enjoy them, photograph them and watch them play with the ship. There was no mention from the PA about not being able to find a whale -- I wish they had clarified that. But we also know that whale sightings are down this season. Last stop was to visit the sea lions that take refuge on a red buoy in the water, and they always delight the kids. This was a birthday gift for our daughter, and her request to take out the cruise again. We will be back as many times as our schedule allows and highly recommend it to all.

The trip we took was great. From the start the staff was very friendly. The boat was very clean. We did not catch much fish, but the crew took us to different areas to help us find the best catch. The view and sunset were just beautiful. We had a lot of fun and help from the crew. Most of all we enjoyed the grilled burgers they were the best, way better than our sandwich. Next time we go I will not bother taking a lunch, maybe some snacks. I will definitely return and take another trip with Dana Wharf Fishing
