Awesome Experience
Tue, Feb 5, 08   10:00 AM Disney2008 Female 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
It was the first time my family and i had ever done an attraction like this. We were all sooo glad to have chosen to go whale watching. On our boat trip out, we saw lots of dolphins swim with the boat, sea lions and a grey whale. It was such a awesome experience to see these animals out in their natural environment. The captain and crew were great, and you could tell that they really wanted you to see something on your trip out and did their best to see that you did.

Invigorating!

We got to see a couple gray whales, and while we followed them for a while and they seemed to not mind our boat, their track and their wanting to be seen frolicing was short lived when other boats (sail, power and yachts) interrupted by cutting our ship off and getting in front of the whales, so the local snooty boots people kind of ruined it... We got to see the amazing phenomenon of the white-sided dolphins working together with local sea lions (that seemed to come out of NOWHERE!) do the hunting task I've only ever seen on the Discovery Channel - where they circled a school of fish and put them into the ball and swam thru them and had a feeding frenzy, including the dolphins, sea lions, sea gulls and even pelicans. That was amazing to see live... It was a nice day, there was great weather, the guides were great, they were VERY knowledgeable, very nice, very courteous and most importantly, very enthusiastic and helpful. I would come back every weekend if I could!

The trip was awesome!

In lieu of buying toys for my grandchildren at Christmas, birthdays, etc. I have decided to spend time with them. This was definitely time well spent. Not only did they "ooh" and "aah" at the pod of common dolphins and shreak with excitement when the whales breeched. The boat ride itself was an adventure for them. Thanks for a great day!

This was a surprise trip for my boyfriend's birthday and we were both pleasantly surprised! Not only did we see hundreds of dolphins but we saw 4 whales! The crew was great in taking us to the perfect spots for dolphin viewing. They were jumping out of the water, some with babies, and playing around the boat and playing with each other. They looked to be having such a wonderful time. It was awsome!! We then ventured out further to search for whales. Our trip was even better than most from what we heard. We saw one of the best 'breaches' of two whales that even the crew said they'd seen. It was absolutely spectacular. We saw others swimming around nearby, partially out of the water at various times, but could see them 'spouting' as well. I highly recommend this trip and I will certainly do it again !

Good Crew

The captain and crew were very nice and easy to get along with. We didn't go very far out maybe 2-3 miles. Stoped a few times to fish, but didn't do to well. We did get a few keepers. There were 14 in our group. Nice day at sea, but the sun didn't come out much. Better luck next time. We would go out again anytime with this crew.

Nice tour, good guys

The trip was pretty much like I expected it to be. As an avid outdoorsman I know that wild animals don't travel by a set schedule and their actions can be un-predictable. I am sure many tourists expect to see about 100 whales per trip, all with their flukes about 15 feet out of the water for 10 seconds each so cameras can be focused. In a perfect world...right. We saw whales, the crew was pleasant...we had a good time. We got a few good photos....the price was right. All good stuff. Thanks

Excellent Value

If you can get passed the pretencious, snobby, plastic locals that live outside of their means, in a dream world - the area is actually really nice. The ship it self was very clean, well maintained, with very well educated staff. I felt safe the entire time, as did my girlfriend. We were just looking for something to do to get away from Disneyland for a day, and this seemed like a good idea. We saw grey whales surface several times, and some dolphins jumping, as well as sea lions (these can be seen at pretty much every rocky point on the west coast, but still interesting). There are food and drinks on the ship, and the one guy who's name I can't remember - he actually stays on deck with you and is full of useful information about the area. I definitely will return and do this again, and highly recommend it for couples or families.

Great time with Dana Wharf team

Even though the rain was threatening the day was beautiful! The Dana Wharf team was able to find a smooth location to fish and we hit a great spot. My group caught the majority of the fish landed on the trip which made for an even better trip.

Good service provided

There are two ways to rate this fishing trip. 1) the quality of the service provided and 2) the results. 1) This was a half-day trip. What I liked about it was that the boat did not spend a lot of time traveling. A short trip out to where the fish were suspected to be, some repositioning to stay on top of the fish and then a short trip back to the dock. The one deckhand worked hard and did his job well. Purchased food was well prepared, fish-cleaning and filleting was quick, fish were removed from the hook and put in your bag for you. Plus, rigging 'help' was offered if it appeared that you needed it or asked for it. Overall rating of service provided: (considering the ratio of customers to deckhands) Better than Average. 2) I have results rated separately because good or bad results can influence one's opinion of the service provided. If you haven't been on a trip like this before, realize that the captain can go to spots that typically hold fish, recommend techniques, and provide bait - but it is still up to the fish to bite and you to catch them. Sometimes they bite and sometimes they don't. I think this spot was known to be a good spot for sculpin. Fortunately, we were catching just enough fish to keep us on the spot. (SCULPIN--aka 'rattlesnake' for the 6 hours of intense pain it can inflict if one of its spines jab you. Sculpin fillets are very popular for eating as they have a light, tasty meat that's not too 'fishy'.) My personal luck wasn't very good: three keeper (10" minimum) sculpin in the bag, double that released for under size limit, and a few small tom cod and queenfish released. Overall rating of results: Below Average considering the size of the jackpot fish, the quantities of fish in the bags, and my personal results. (I've had better 1/2 day results.) If you are considering a half-day fishing trip, understand that local 1/2 day fishing doesn't typically provide big fish or large numbers of fish. Your chances for either of those is better when you go on a longer trip. That being said, this dock provided well for this 1/2 day trip. Parking for this dock is inconvenient. There is a special area available, but it is a few hundred yards away. The inconvenient part is that the dock needs to provide you with a special card to place on your dash so that you don't get towed for exceeding the four hour maximum. That means leaving your gear in your vehicle while you get your ticket and parking card or you leave it at the dock while you hike back to your vehicle to put the parking card on the dash. I have an open bed pickup truck so in my case, either option leaves my gear unattended and susceptable to theft. I chose leaving it outside the dock's shop and it was fine. If there were more than one in your party, this problem could be easily avoided. The convenience of viewing the calendar, reading reviews and purchasing the ticket online was very nice. I recommend to all docks to do the same.

Nice Boat Ride

The coastline was beautiful and it was neat to see Sea Lions. We didn't see whales or dolphins, so I can't recommend it on that account. They did provide a coupon we can use to go again for free. The coupon supposedly never expires.

After a valiant effort to locate a viewable whale, our captain headed further out to sea to discover a Mega Pod of Dolphins! Hundreds of them! It was amazing and they were all around the boat. Good fun! Great experience!
