Diver Ed is a riot, especially for kids
Sun, Aug 16  1:30 PM jeanpcusick Female 70+ Local Family With Children
Diver Ed and his wife Captain evil provide a unique view of the seaworld in the cold waters of Maine with hilarious commentary and actions. Diver Ed sings madeup songs as he prepares to be pushed off the stern by all the kids aboard. He takes a camera with him and the pictures are beamed aboard to a large screen. He selects various sea life to bring aboard, including baby lobsters, scallops, and star fish plus various sizes of seacucumbers. After he comes aboard all seacreatures are handed around to be gently handled and even kissed. Seacucumbers also squirt -- in faces, down backs with much laughter and screams from the kids. The adults also enjoy the show especially seeing the kids react. Both Diver Ed and his wife are extremely knowledgeable about everything we are seeing. My son-in-law and grandson (11 yrs) said it was the best trip they have ever taken. This is a trip not to be missed on any visit to Acadia National Park

Great education for kids (and adults)

I enjoyed every minute of this adventure and so did my daughter and her children. I was impressed with Ed's ability to relate to little kids---the ones with me were ages 7 and 5. They won't ever forget the trip, and I am sure they will return on future trips to Down East Maine. We have recommended Diver Ed to many friends.

Best inter-generational educational outing!

You're not going to find a better activity than Diver Ed's cruise. From the outset, starting by meeting at the convenient, well marked attractive grounds of COA everything is well planned for your enjoyment. Personal nametags give everyone a sense of belonging, the boat is comfortable (there's even a "head"), the scenery magnificent,,the narrative enlightening and Diver Ed's performance unequalled. A short cruise takes you to the diving scene and there is lots of oppportunity for everyone to get to know the sea creatures that he brings up from the depths. A unique and fascinating excursion...don't miss it!

Wonderful, Entertaining Experience
Fri, Jul 18, 08   1:30 PM byrne31 Female 70+ Combination Family With Children
As grandparents, visiting our children and grandchildren in Bar Harbor, we were delighted to participate in the Diver Ed experience. Diver Ed was funny, informative, and thoroughly entertaining. The use of the underwater camera and projection of both voice and picture was fantastic. His interaction with the small children made it a memorable field trip.

Perfect finish to a great vacation!

Diver Ed and Captain Evil (I think that is the name he used, I call her Captain Edna) were superb hosts, educators and entertainers. Our grandson is 9 and our granddaughter is 12, both sat on the edge of their seats the entire trip. Diver Ed interacts with the group while walking along the ocean floor with Mini Ed. As he discoveres the sea creatures he shares the various aspects of each one. He then places them in a safe bag to bring onboard for all to see and touch. They had the opportunity to hold sea cucumbers, scallops, crabs, lobsters, sea stars, sand dollars, star fish and even a sponge; many in various sizes. We not only learned of the living sea creatures but also the equipment required to allow Diver Ed to walk along the ocean bottom. The kids had great fun "helping" him into the water and expanding his water suit upon his return to the boat. We recommend any kid at heart to join Diver Ed and Captain Edna on the Starfish Enterprise for a trip you will not soon forget.

Terrific 3 hour adventure!

The cruise sails from College of the Atlantic, which is fascinating in its own right. The program is excellent for adults who have an interest in Maine sea life and enjoy a cruise. The Park Ranger was both enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. Not only did we see eider ducks, gray & harbor seals, dolphins, gulls (of course), heard about the bird populations of the various islands circled, and viewed some of the lovely "cottages" along the cliffs, but then were enthralled with the video presentation of "Diver Ed'. He dives to the sea floor to collect specimens of starfish, lobsters, sea cucumber (the source of chondroitin!), and other life forms which we then were permitted to touch and examine closely before they were returned to their habitat. "Diver Ed" has a great partner in his wife, who gives a running commentary of what we are seeing on the video screen. It is a true bargain and delight and we were privileged to have the opportunity! Thanks!

Best nature cruise on the coast of Maine
Fri, Sep 4  9:30 AM ilanah Male 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
To paraphrase the bandit in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," "we don't need no stinkin' children" to have a ball at Diver Ed's Dive-In Theater. Ed is a perfect blend of John Belushi and Jacques Cousteau (with a dash of Soupy Sales) and entertains and educates 10 years olds and AARP veterans in equal measure. It's easy to underestimate the importance of this kind of joyous instruction, but someday, somewhere, some kid who's been on Starfish Enterprise will find that he has a personal interest in acting on some information about a danger to sea life because of the fun that he had that morning in Frenchman's Bay. And the world will be a little better place. Diver Ed's interaction with the kids on his boat is at a perfect pitch. It's loud, sometimes scary ("Here, kiss this sea cucumber!"), it's funny, and it's always full of the love he has for what he's doing. If you're within a hundred miles of Bar Harbor, if you have children, grandchildren, or no children, treat yourself to a couple of hours at Diver Ed's Dive-in Theater.

When I got on the boat there were several children and it was feared I'd not enjoy being with so many little ones. How wrong could one person be? Diver Ed and Captain Evil are so very knowledgeable.....and extremely entertaining!! Even at my age I learned things about the ocean and the creatures therein. I would recommend this excursion to anyone who would listen!!! Thanks for a great afternoon!!

This activity was recommended for children. While the children on board had a wonderful time, so did the adults! The Park Ranger was very important to the success of this trip. (We were a group of adults) Accessing the boat is difficult for those who have difficulty walking the two blocks from the meeting point. (One of the groups on the boat). Plenty of extra time should be allowed for this purpose. Also come early to enjoy the natural history museum at the starting point. (The University of the Atlantic.) Parking was complicated. We were directed to a particular parking lot by Zerve agent. The parking lot attendant said that this was not necessary and we went back to park in a more logical place (closer to start of tour). Parking may be restricted when school is in session, but during August it was not.

Excellent for all age groups

Our three generation group all found this trip to be the highlight of our Bar Harbor vacation. Everyone got to participate in the hands on encounter with sea animals and all questions were answered patiently and in ways that we could understand. Watching the diver's finds on the big screen while he worked was amazing because we could see very small creatures greatly magnified. We recommend it most highly.

Best messing about in boats in Maine
Sun, Aug 16  1:30 PM casadora Female 60-69 Local Family With Children
This was our first cruise in the new boat, the Starship Enterprise, but our fourth with Diver Ed and Captain Evil. The cruise is the highlight of the grandchildren's summer visit to Bar Harbor and is always first on the list of desired birthday presents. Ed and Edna are warm and educational and wonderful and they include everyone in the fun, even the grownups. If you want to learn a lot about sea creatures and laugh a lot as well, this cruise is the place to be.

We had three generations from 65 to 3 and all enjoyed the trip. Diver Ed is great fun, like a kid himself , and everyone got into the spirit of the trip. So much fun to see all the kids touching and enjoying all the sea animals. Loved it and recommend it highly!

so much better than I expected

All the staff, Diver Ed, his wife and the ranger, shared their knowledge with an enthusiasm that showed that they really love what they do. Diver Ed was both informative and entertaining, keeping both adults and children raptly attentive. The three hours went by quickly. I would do this again in a heartbeat and I was not that keen to begin with. But I would bring any guest on this trip. It was great fun!
