While born and raised in New York, although I don't live there any longer, I had never visited this area before or really knew about it, other than that it existed. It was a really worthwhile tour with excellant food, a fantastic, very knowledgable tour guide, nice people from New Orleans, Europe and Australia, and educational. I went because of a recommendation from a friend, and will definitely recommend this to others. |

I thought we spent too much time at Chelsea Market, but that may be because there are not a lot of restaurants in the area. Curt was wonderful. He's entertaining, friendly, funny and knowledgeable. |

Our tour guide, Curt was part historian, part foodie extrodinaire, part stand up comedian. He had us laughing while we learned a lot about the history of the area and the food we were enjoying ... the afternoon flew by. It was a delightful way to spend an afternoon with friends exploring a part of Manhattan we had not before. |

We were guided by Bob, a NY native, who was very knowledgable about the area. His interest in food and personalities in the food industry was very evident and infectious. A very charming guide to the area.
I had done the Greenwich tour before and must admit that I preferred that location to this one. The Meatpack tour took place in Chelsea market which is essentially a gourmet mall of relocated family businesses. Personally I prefer to do the tastings in a more original atmosphere. Also due to the sound from a decorative fountain in the building the tour guide could sometimes not be heard.
Another thing which I didn't like was that one of the tastings was potato chips. The packaging had been laid out on the table so the "gourmet" tasting felt just like the usual tastings you get at your local mall. It cheapened the experience a bit.
Nevertheless a recommended tour but the original Greenwich tour is considerably better.

Don't go to Soho - try this out instead!

When I booked this tour, my preference had been for either Greenwich Village or Soho, but as it was last minute, the only place left was on the Chelsea and Meat Packing District tour. I did think twice but I am so glad I did proceed with the booking. I turned up at Chelsea Market and was met by the guide - Cindy. She was fabulous! So enthusiastic, full of life and interesting stories. We spent most of the 3 hrs in Chelsea Market - what a facinating place! We stopped and so many places to sample and feast along the way and then finished the tour outside in the meat packing district, which they are now calling MeaPa ... this district is quite surreal, on one side of the street you have chic designers like Stella McCartney and then accross the street you have a meat packing plant with joints of meat hanging from huge hooks.
But it was a super 3 hrs and you will love Cindy - such a character!
A few tips:
1. Don't eat before you go on the tour
2. Be prepared to eat desert first!
3. Make sure you have some time to look around on your own at the end of the tour as no shopping is allowed! And there is so much to see in this area and some great little restaurants to sample ...
Don't go to Soho - try this out instead! If you are interested in food and local culture, you will love this tour. You also get a look at where Sex in the City's very own Samantha lives! 2 for the price of 1 - now that's value!
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! |

The tour was terrific--even for two locals. Our guide was funny, energetic and knew enough N.Y. history to teach a university course. We definitely plan to take the other two food tours in the near future. |
