Fun experience

A very informative and fun activity in a cultural and historical rich area. Lots of interesting titbits and learning more about living in Greenwich village and Soho. The tastings were carefully chosen providing a nice variety and plenty of great tasting food. Overall highly recommended.

A definite must do!

The tour was very interesting and informative. The food tasting was a great variety that proves how nyc is so rich with culture from different worlds. I've lived in NY for most of my life yet would probably not have tried, ventured into or even notice many of the places that we stopped at on the tour. I highly recommend this tour and look forward to taking one of the other tours that are being offered.

Excellent tour--some areas for improvement

Central Village/SoHo tour was great in its own right, and I would have rated it as "Enthusiastically Recommended" had I not been on the original Greenwich Village food tour given by Foods of New York. The Greenwich Village tour seemed to focus on how to enjoy the Village as a tourist, keying in on restaurants and bars that one could enjoy. The mix of tastings and culture notes was perfect. The Central Village tour seemed to focus more on venues to enjoy if you lived in the area. The fresh pasta shop, the bakery, and the fresh mozzerella shop were fantastic tasting stops, but as a tourist, they did not prove as useful to me as the venues highlighted on the Greenwich Village tour. The culture notes on the Central Village tour, though very interesting, were not balanced with the tastings. The time spent in Washington Square Park seemed very long and made the tour feel a bit disjointed. All these points must be balanced by the fact that I went on this new tour when it was in its very early days--the tour guides indicated at the outset that they were still working the 'kinks' out of the programme. I can't stress enough that despite my recomendations for improvement, I still found this tour to be excellent, and will recommend it to friends and family, as I have already done in respect of the Greenwich Village tour. I look forward to doing the Meatpacking District tour on my next visit to NYC!

very good

The tour was very good. Barry seemed annoyed when I bought some food at a pasta shop. She told me three times that the tour would not wait. I agreed each time, saying OK, we'll catch up. The third time was REALLY annoying. The group had not left when my purchase was complete for reasons that have nothing to do with me. Therefore, at least two of the three naggings were superfluous. Also, there was no bathroom stop on a three hour event.. Not so good for persons over sixty. Otherwise, we enjoyed the food, the history, and the tour.

Great guides, good information, too much standing

I loved the information that we were given about the area that we were in and the restaurants that we could return to to eat,d rink and derive entertainment from. The down part of the trip was a lot of standing around instead of walking or finding a spot where we could all sit and listen to the guides. The food was good and they accommodated individuals who were vegans and disliked spicey food. Very considerate. Some of the portions could have been larger or peraps have two small ortions of two different foods at the same location. I wold reccommend this tour to others in the New York area as something to do when they first arrived so that they had options for dinners and entertainment away from Broadway.

The tour was given by enthusastic members of the community. It was well organized and the food was ready when we arrived. The bottle of water came in handy. They went to great lengt to accomodate special requests. It was nice to hear that the food is actually paid for. The historical remarks were nice as well and delivered the background to the district.

WE ENJOYED THE TOUR VERY MUCH. THE TOUR GUIDES WERE VERY KNOWLEGEBLE AND THE FOOD TASTINGS WERE GREAT, NO SMALL PORTIONS.WE HEARD ABOUT THE TOUR THROUGH OUR DAUGHTER WHO WORKS IN THE VILLAGE. WE WENT ON THE TOUR WITH 12 OF OUR FRIENDS AND EVERYONE COULD NOT SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS ABOUT THE TOUR. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO TAKING ANOTHER TOUR THE NEXT TIME WE VISIT THE CITY. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE TOUR!!!!!!!!

At $20 (the promotional price) this was a major bargain!! We got to try food in places I probably never would have stepped foot inside, and everything was delicious. The history of the area was neat too. I highly recommend this tour.

We were in a party of seven on our guide Barri’s (sorry if spelling’s wrong?) first solo tour of this district and we enjoyed every minute of it! The food samples were varied, tasty and often had a story behind them that made us realise how unique they were, whilst Barri’s enthusiasm for the area, its people and its history was truly infectious. As she pointed out before we parted, we came away knowing things about Greenwich and Soho that most New Yorker’s themselves probably don’t know, so it was indeed a privilege to have had the opportunity. If we’d had more than just six days in this great city we’d have certainly booked onto the other food and culture tours too! C&A, England, October 2006.

In a word... Fabulous!

My husband and I completed this tour on our recent trip to NYC from Atlanta and would highly recommend it to visitors and locals alike. Our main tour guide, Bari, was incredibly informative, professional, energetic and charming. I would softly suggest that her gentleman associate guide turn off his cell phone during tours b/c all the calls were disruptive. We found the historical and cultural information fascinating - Bari's passion for the historical integrity of the village was undeniable! I had been to this area before, but did not know the history or which restaurants (and there are many) were best. The vast variety of ethnical foods we tasted on the tour were intriguing and the main reason signed up for this tour. As a personal chef, I was most interested in the details of the food preparation and the ingredients. I think diehard Foodies would be, too, and the tour guides may have arguably been a little light on this information. All in all, we wished we would have scheduled this tour @ the beginning of our trip vs. the last day. The 3-hour walk was somewhat exhausting for already tired and sore feet, but we found it to be the highlight of our NYC visit. The long-standing ethnical mom-and-pop restaurants and shops were an appreciated treat coming from Atlanta that has sadly evolved into a chain restaurant wasteland.
