great cultural experience!

The group consisted of mostly under 35 couples, but there was a single woman from new jersey, myself and my mom as well. I got it for my mom as a mothers day gift, figured it would be unique. She enjoyed it, as did I. I will definitely participate in another tour again. Someo f the food was spicy, so beware. I am not one for spice, but I do enjoy a little exotic food once in while so I thought it was tolerable, but my mom did not enjoy the spice much. The tour guide Susan was fantastic. You could see her passion about the neighborhood. She was very friendly and helpful. It will make you tired! The walking was not very far but for some reason I was exhausted afterwards. My mother was too. I work in manhattan (and im only 23) so im used to alot of walking, in total i walk approx a mile per day, and my mother walks for 30 minuts almost every night, but this tour definitely made us go home and rest. It was well worth it though!! Just think through any plans you make for afterwards, and plan for the tour to go over atleast an hour or so. ine was supposed to end at 330, it ended at 415.

very good tour

The tour was fine, it lasted a little too long perhaps because of the long trip round Washingon Square. The food was fine but could be more interesting. The first dish at the Indian restaurant was great but it was downhill from there (we left before the last too restaurants as we had another appointment. It was nearly four PM at the time). I would recommend this tour to friend.

Great way to spend an afternoon

This is a great way to spend an afternoon away from the tourist traps of Manhattan and find out about the real NY from a New Yorker's point of view. Our guide Rahim was superb and whilst we weren't familiar with all the cultural references being from the UK we did know where he was coming from most of the time. The food was excellent going into places we probably wouldn't normally do just by the look of the outside. We went back to Montes for our final dinner (thanks for the recommendation) and also to some of the great places we went to on the original tour a few years ago - glad to see they are still going strong - John's Pizza and Rocco's particularly.

Great guide, nice tour but food bland & uninspired

No question guide was best part of experience and was enthusiastic explicator of area haunts & history. Altho $44 doesn't require knock out food or big portions, it should be warm ( tour began late and food was prepared for earlier arrival), tasted bland (i.e., potato gnocchi at Monte's & potato pizza at last stop), and uninspired. Nothing exotic needed. Why not try a little red sauce or something familiar to compare against? Authentic Italian pasta maker & cheese maker across from St. Anthony's Church were great and tasty. Indian Bakery was good as well as Sullivan St. Peanutbutter Co. with taste of curried chicken in pb sandwich. One bone to pick: tour need to be prepared for vegans or those with food allergies for alternate offering(s). (There were insufficient quantity of substitute to satisfy the number of people in these categories in our group.) Another quibble: Tour covered many spots but ommitted mention of a few notable restaurants in the area that are on par with, or superior to, Monte's, et al. Best part was learning history of area. In summmary, it was a good tour because of our guide and nice walk around the area, but food, in general, was disappointing. Correct that and you have a 5+ star experience.

Great food!

Great food! We were able to sample food from other countries (i.e. Indian, Greek, Italian, Middle Eastern). The tour was interesting and tour guide was very knowledgeable. We were looking forward to the Israeli and Jamaican food as described in the tour info, but for some unexplained reason we never got to sample these foods. We would like to recommend that tour ends where it starts. It was a bit confusing to get back to our subway station afterwards. We did not enjoy this tour as much as the Greenwich Village food tour which we took last year. Bleecker Street Pizza remains our all time New York pizza favorite!!!!

Fun

It was a fun tour and our guide (Raheem) was awesome. He was really funny and he was a dynamic and interesting speaker. He really seemed to enjoy what he was doing. I did the Greenwich Village tour a few years ago and that one had better food, but this was still enjoyable. If I repeated one though, it would be the Greenwich Village tour, not Soho.

Village History with Taste

It rained steadily for the entire 3.5-hour tour but our guide kept our interest and offered a strong distraction from the rain with his knowledge of the classic central West Village and its historic clubs, hotels, coffee shops and hangouts. We sampled eight types of food on welcome opportunities to go indoors, learning first-hand why the Village/Soho may be New York's most ethnically diverse neighborhood and why eating there is as much adventure as it is appetite arousal. The guide, incidentally, spoke to be heard above the street sounds, although he sometimes rattled off his stories a bit too speedily.

3rd walking tour in nyc

Friday may 9th. Everyone showed up for the walking tour of Soho and central village and it was pouring rain and windy.Rajim our guide was interesting and informative. He tried to get us inside our tour stops to let us eat inside as much as possible. It was very good and enjoyable despite the weather. My recommendation is maybe a couple more eating spots, just don't tell us about how good the food is at certain places but let us sample them. My first tour of Grenwich Village we had 11 different eating places. Next I was at the Market area and that was 9 or 10 so a couple more would make it perfect, cause there was quite a span between eatries at the latter part of the tour but overall it was informative and interesting and I will definitely book for the 2 new tours. Japanese Tapas and Shisii.

Great Secret Finds

Super. Yes, we did have great tastings at conspicuous places but the uniqueness of this tour is the discovery of small "hole in the wall" eateries that were great surprises!
