Heart of the Village Food & Culture Tour

activity photo

Sample tasty treats from ethnic, old-school eateries in two distinct areas - one colorful and exciting, the other surprisingly quaint.

Enjoyable but too filling.

Our tour guide, Susan, was very informative and pleasant but might have been able to interject a bit more humor or storytelling into the tour to peak more interest. This is my third tour (have done the original Greenwich Village and Chelsea Market tours) and while I enjoyed this food tour, it was my least favorite. While there was a nice variety, there were too many "carb filled items" that were filling and wouldn't allow full enjoyment of the "tasting" experience, i.e., foccaccia mini-sand, Indian wrap, pasta bolgnese, empanadas. Perhaps a chopped Italian salad or antipasta, satay chicken, a mango/papya salad - anything to break up the heaviness a little. Other than that, the tour was enjoyable as always. And the Cuban dining room was adorable! I'm sure it's difficult to get these tours "inside", but I think part of my fascination has been each restaurant's ambiance (really enjoyed Moromoto's bathroom experience on a Sunday!) and the restaurant in the Village tour that had the personal back kitchen (name escapes me right now). Will definately recommend and continue to go on your tours.

A great way to get to know New York City!

This is a great way to get to know individual parts of Manhattan. If you love foods, and history, this is a great tour. Definitely wear your comfortable shoes...3 hours is long for walking/standing and it can get to your lower back! I would say this is not a tour for young children, as there is a lot of listening to history, but teenager age and up with an interest in this would be appropriate. I had my two daughters, college age, and my mother iage n law, and it was a fun time! You do not need to eat something first...there is plenty of food! We can't wait to take another tour. Oh, and by the way, 3 of the 4 of us are vegetarian, and you need to let them know this when doing the online purchase as they will accommodate you! Everything was delicious! Our tour guide was great! After the tour we went back to purchase fresh, delicious pasta on Houston St. (One of the stops) Bring your camera!

Raheem was an excellent guide! I highly recommend him. He was funny, and knew an overwhelming amount of information about the area as well as all the foods we tasted. We were very full after our tastings and did not need to eat anything for a long time afterwards! The foods were amazing!! The flavors truly exploded in your mouth with the first bites. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone!!

Really enjoyed our tour thru the village. Was totally impressed with all of the history the guide gave in a fun and interesting way. Plenty of food for the tastings. Will go back to places we visitied in the future. Had a great time! Love the small groups walking instead of buses.

Susan was an excellent guide, but the stretch of walking through the Washington Square park was long and slow. Also this tour seems to focus more on the food and less on the history than the Chelsea/Meatpacking tour, which has been our favorite of all the food walking tours we've done in the past five years.

Will do it again . . .

This is our second tour, my husband and I took the Original Greenwich Village last May. This time we included 8 additional family members (18 to 65) and we had a great time. The quality, quantity and diversity of the food selection were excellent with the added bonus of more indoor sit down tasting than the previous tour, which was appreciated since the day was very hot. Our guide Dianna was very knowledgeable about the history, culture, architecture and past and present residents of the neighborhood. We would do this tour again and look forward to doing the other tours offered by this company.

Not as advertised, did not enjoy

Guide appeared to be unwelcome at at least one establishment, food of average quality at best. Left tour after 90 minutes, most of which was spent standing outside establishments eating food out of wrappers or listening to anecdotal stories. Definitely not something that would appeal to "foodies'. Need to either establish relationships with restaurants who welcome visitors and provide a variety of culinary treats or rename the tour to something closer to what it was - anecdotal history of the area with fast food on the side

This was my third food tour with FoodsOfNY purchased through ZERVE. It was easy to setup the tour but not as easy to find the group meetup in New York City, since it actually was inside the restaurant instead of outside on the street - outside is better in my opinion. Everyone can see the group from a distance, for one thing. Secondly, we were dodging the wait staff inside. And finally, that restaurant was NOT on our tour, which I found pointless and distracting. The tour however was very good and everyone in our extended family enjoyed it. We ate significantly more food on this tour than the previous two, which was very nice, considering it is billed as a food tour. I will likely take future tours with FoodsOfNY. This remains an excellent way to spend 3+ hours walking around New York City, and everyone else in the group seems to have felt the same way, judging by the number of tips we gave our tour guide at the end.

This was my 3rd tour and I enjoyed it just as much if not more than the first 2. Our tour guide, Susan was very knowledgeable and gave us plenty of details & history about the area. The food tastings were very generous portions and everything was delicious. I can hardly wait for the next tour which will be the Nolita tour.
