Food for Thought
Thu, Nov 12  11:30 AM genuinerisk1 Unspecified Unspecified Combination Group of Friends
Our group of nine consisted of three former New Yorkers, two Brits and visitors from Kentucky, Michigan and Massachusetts. All LOVED this tour. Our tour day was rainy and cool but nothing dampened our experience. We learned about the Village and ate our way from pizza to cookies and from a subtle cauliflower appetizer to faux BBQ'd pork at a Japanese vegetarian restaurant (and yes, you read that correctly). We learned about early Village history and it's modern development; about Washington Irving and Edna St. Vincent Millay; about Cherry Lane Theatre and basement jazz on Cornelia St. Dave, our guide was great. It is hard to please all of the people all of the time but Dave did this for more than three hours of fabulous fare and fun - even the jaded former New Yorkers were dazzled by what had been in their backyard, missed till now.

This tour was a nice intro to Greenwich Village, a gem neighborhood of NYC that's full of quaint and delicious restaurants, specialty shops, theaters and cool places to live. Our guide was friendly and informed, dropping in enough history and current culture to make the midday trek through the Village continually interesting. Plus, the " food tastings" were great!

More than just food

Whilst the food that we tasted on this tour was very good, I particularly enjoyed learning about the history and culture of the area as we walked its streets. We did the tour early in our time in New York and I feel that this understanding enriched our stay. Our guide was knowledgeable and approachable and the pace seemed to suit the group very well. There was a good variety of cuisine styles offered as we walked and although quantities were small to moderate at each venue, no-one in our group of friends needed dinner that night!

Take the tour only if you enjoy food tasting

Overall, I had a good time on the Greenwich Village Food Tasting and Cultural Tour and the tour guide was very comical. I really enjoyed tasting the various foods on the tour (some food tasting stops were better than others though) and the tour did a great job of accomodating a vegetarian diet. If you enjoy food tasting and plan on revisiting the Greenwich Village area during your trip, then this is a really good tour to take because the tour guide gives you restaurant recommendations. However, if you are taking the tour to learn about the culture/history of Greenwich Village, then I would recommend taking another tour because I didn't learn very much about the area. Although this is a 3 hour tour, a lot of the time is spent waiting for the tour guide to go into the restaurant and bring out the food to the group. Also, I was hoping to explore more of the Greenwich Village area, but you basically stay on the same street during the tour. I think this tour is overpriced for what it is.

A Great Food Tour Experience

Our guide, Kurt, met us right on time at the Chelsea Market--he made a real effort to remember and use all of our first names--and was amazingly successful. He really knew the area and told us many interesting things about it. He was very knowledgeable about all the establishments we visited (and there were quite a few), and made sure we all were enjoying ourselves, learning about the Market and meat packing district, and along the way eating lots of delicious food. When we met, it was raining and he said how lucky we were to have chosen this tour as the Market part was all inside--but he promised that by the time we came to the meat packing part, during which we walked outside, the sun would be shining and it would be a beautiful day--and he was right! We also visited several restaurants in the area which was great because we plan to visit Chelsea when next we're in NYC and now we know some good places to eat. Altogether a delightful day. We can't recommend the tour highly enough.

A Movable Feast!

This was the second tour we took with Foods of NY, the first being the original Greenwich Village tour a few years ago. We enjoyed that one so much, we decided to go back for a "second helping," this time bringing an out-of-town guest. We all had a great time. Our guide, Susan, was friendly, informative and thoroughly professional. The tour runs like a Swiss watch, so precise that you have to stop and think about how much planning and organizing must go into it, to have each and every restaurant or shop prepared to greet and serve the group as soon as we arrive. We are lifelong New Yorkers and my husband went to school at NYU, so we are no strangers to Greenwich Village, but New York is definitely a "work in progress" that can and should be visited with frequency. The food was varied, interesting, and of uniformly good quality. The Greenwich Village sights, from Washington Square Park to SoHo a real slice of New York. We even got to witness the finales of two different weddings - a little "extra" no one expected! There are a lot of walking tours out there, but only one with FOOD; no contest!

We have heard about Greenwich Village since the 1960's but have not kept up with the changes that have occurred over the years. It is an area filled with history unique to the Village. We enjoyed the tasting experiences and the tour so much. This was a highlight of our NYC visit. Can't wait to try one of the other food tasting and culture tours offered in NYC. .
