Guiltless Gourmet in Greenwich

The tour is well-planned, easily walkable with plenty of sitting-to-eat breaks (I'm 20 weeks pregnant, and I never felt outpaced), and most importantly delicious food! The tour sampled 7 outstanding local establishments, while highlighting others that we might also like to enjoy (and many in my group did immediately go try the extra choices when the tour was over). We got a wonderful sense of the West Village--its character, history, gossip, and fabulous foods! A very, very special tour. I can't recommend it enough.

Food for Thought

Our group of nine consisted of three former New Yorkers, two Brits and visitors from Kentucky, Michigan and Massachusetts. All LOVED this tour. Our tour day was rainy and cool but nothing dampened our experience. We learned about the Village and ate our way from pizza to cookies and from a subtle cauliflower appetizer to faux BBQ'd pork at a Japanese vegetarian restaurant (and yes, you read that correctly). We learned about early Village history and it's modern development; about Washington Irving and Edna St. Vincent Millay; about Cherry Lane Theatre and basement jazz on Cornelia St. Dave, our guide was great. It is hard to please all of the people all of the time but Dave did this for more than three hours of fabulous fare and fun - even the jaded former New Yorkers were dazzled by what had been in their backyard, missed till now.

I'm a foodie! And my english is not good. But I did understand the tastings. New York surprised me most on this tour. All I can say: New York (read: Greenwich Village), I LOVE YOU!!! Kind regards! Rudy Schoofs Belgium.

Great tour-delicious food and informative history

We did the Greenwich Village - Soho tour and were totally thrilled with it. When I booked it I was afraid it might be a bit cheezy and inauthentic, but thought we'd give it a shot anyway. I knew from the first stop that we were in for a good day. The food we ate at the Indian restaurant was absolutely delicious, and the other diners in the restaurant were from Mumbai, so it was clearly an authentic place! All of the other sites were terrific too - almost all locally owned for generations by the same family. It really felt like we were getting an insider's glimpse into the neighborhood food scene. Our guide was great - a young guy that knew his history and his food. And the other people in our group were sophisticated and polite, so it didn't feel like you were being dragged around with some huge obnoxious tour group. I would reccomend the tour to anyone!

The tour was so much fun and we ate some amazing food. Our tour guide Cindy was so upbeat and it seemed like all of the local vendors knew her extremely well. She really went out of her way to personalize everything. The weather was rainy and miserable but the time flew with how much fun we had. I'd recommend this tour to anyone! Local or tourist.

Easy, Interesting and Tasty!

This tour was a nice intro to Greenwich Village, a gem neighborhood of NYC that's full of quaint and delicious restaurants, specialty shops, theaters and cool places to live. Our guide was friendly and informed, dropping in enough history and current culture to make the midday trek through the Village continually interesting. Plus, the " food tastings" were great!

A delightful, informative walk through the Village

The four of us, two women and our husbands have been to Greenwich Village many times on our visits to New York. But this was the first time we thoroughly enjoyed walking through, leisurely stopping at places, looking into windows, meeting shop keepers, tasting different foods, learning about the history of the neighborhood an New York, and generally having a good time. Our tour guide, Sephra, was well informed, humorous, provided all kinds of information about places, buildings, restaurants, where to eat, places of interest, and people who live in the village. Because of her we later came back and ate at The Commerce Restaurant (good Sunday Brunch), and enjoyed an outstanding performance of Judith Ivey at the Cherry Lane Theatre. We later also frequented other places on our own, and felt like we really knew the neighborhood. If I moved from San Francisco, I would probably move to Manhattan, and live in the village. Sephra was a terrific guide--make sure she stays with your organization. She was a bonus. Elise Kazanjian

We've already recommended this to our friends, and even gone back to two of the 4 of the places highlighted on our tour! The Ricotta Cheesecake at Bellavitae was the best we've ever had. We bought coffee from Porto Rico Importing, Co. and have already made some in a brand new French Press! We got some noodles from Rafetto's and can't wait to make them. Overall, This was one of the highlights of our trip. We hope to take one of the other food tours when we return!

We had four days in NYC and this tour had been recommended to us. MAKE SURE YOU DO IT even if it means you miss some of the other more traditional sightseeing. Walking around Greenwich Village will give you a sense of the real New York and the restaurants that real New Yorkers rate. We tasted some fantastic food, met some of the chefs and laughed all the way round with our tour guide who had a great sense of humour. Our tour guide was Sephra (a trained pastry chef) so was more food focused that history and acrhitecture but that suited us fine!

Take the tour only if you enjoy food tasting

Overall, I had a good time on the Greenwich Village Food Tasting and Cultural Tour and the tour guide was very comical. I really enjoyed tasting the various foods on the tour (some food tasting stops were better than others though) and the tour did a great job of accomodating a vegetarian diet. If you enjoy food tasting and plan on revisiting the Greenwich Village area during your trip, then this is a really good tour to take because the tour guide gives you restaurant recommendations. However, if you are taking the tour to learn about the culture/history of Greenwich Village, then I would recommend taking another tour because I didn't learn very much about the area. Although this is a 3 hour tour, a lot of the time is spent waiting for the tour guide to go into the restaurant and bring out the food to the group. Also, I was hoping to explore more of the Greenwich Village area, but you basically stay on the same street during the tour. I think this tour is overpriced for what it is.

Knowledgeable leader and great tastings.

The Greenwich Village tour offered a wealth of information about this neighbourhood along with some delicious tastings. The tour was extremely concentrated in a small section of the Village, and we would have liked to travel a bit farther - it seems that standing still is more difficult than walking! While we thoroughly enjoyed the tastings from the various restaurants and proprietors on the tour, we would have appreciated being able to wander through more of the establishments for a greater appreciation of the wide variety of products some of the shops offer. Having said this, we feel well armed to return to Greenwich Village to further explore some of the restaurants we were introduced to. Thanks to our awesome tour guide for her expertise and enthusiasm!

A Great Food Tour Experience

Our guide, Kurt, met us right on time at the Chelsea Market--he made a real effort to remember and use all of our first names--and was amazingly successful. He really knew the area and told us many interesting things about it. He was very knowledgeable about all the establishments we visited (and there were quite a few), and made sure we all were enjoying ourselves, learning about the Market and meat packing district, and along the way eating lots of delicious food. When we met, it was raining and he said how lucky we were to have chosen this tour as the Market part was all inside--but he promised that by the time we came to the meat packing part, during which we walked outside, the sun would be shining and it would be a beautiful day--and he was right! We also visited several restaurants in the area which was great because we plan to visit Chelsea when next we're in NYC and now we know some good places to eat. Altogether a delightful day. We can't recommend the tour highly enough.
