A well kept secret
Sat, Nov 14  11:30 AM Reniehale Male 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Couple on a Date
Came across this tour by accident on the internet. Was planning to do a tour of manhatten and heard about the tour that the Food Network did on a very limited basis in 2008 and wanted to visit the Food Network. After google searching, came across this Food Tour of Chelesa Market. Read the description and was curious. Spoke with my friend and we decided to take the tour. Tour guide was very knowledgeable about the Market. Description about going on tour on an empty stomach was a good suggestion. Sampling was throughout the 3 hour tour. Very informative and exciting on my part since I am a self proclamed "foodie." Both of us enjoyed stops along the tour that interested us in our own specific taste. I never knew I could get so excitied about a milk bar that served oatmeal. The Corn and Crab Chowder at the Lobster Place was to die for as my friend enjoyed the Lobster Bisque. The tour held no more than 15 people, which was just about right since we went on a crowded Saturday. It is recommended that you wear good walking shoes, since you will be on your feet for about 90% of the time. Had the opportunity to do a wine tasting. Yum. The meat packing district was a informative segment of the tour. I would do this tour again. This tour was taken on 10/14/08; 11:30am.

Fabulous!

Diana was our tour guide, she was excellent! Very informative and fun. As for the food, it was above and beyond our expectations and much larger quantities than we thought they would be. Needless to say we were very full by the end of the tour, the food was wonderful. The weather was not that great but most of the time we were indoors so it really didn't affect our tour much at all. We even lucked out and had a wine tasting at both Delposto and then later at the Wine Vault. (Not normally part of the tour, but we in the right place/right time). We had such a nice group of people from different states as well as locals. We enjoyed this tour so much that we are already planning to do a different one in the spring! Thanks Diana, you were great! One of the "Jersey Girls"

Just do it!

It was great! We would do it again (and we probably will)! Our guide was fantastic. We had more food than we could have guessed, and it was all good. Plus we learned about the neighborhood and history. It is a fun way to spend an afternoon in New York! Really, don't wait, just go ahead now and make your reservations.

The best part of my NY trip by far!

Our guide was Curt Upton, and in my opinion the tour could not have better. The Tour took a little over 3 hours and not once in that time period was I bored or Wanting for something to do. The guide was funny and extremly knowledgable About the area and all of the local of interest. The food was fantastic and well chosen. Even though I just went on the tour I would go again in a heart beat. Well worth the Money and then some.

Had a great time

My family and I wanted to do something different that everyone from all ages could participate, so when I read about this I signed us up, being as we love to eat. I have to say the first response from my family was not accepting of what I had expained what we would to be doing, but midway through the tour I was getting hugs and thank yous from everyone. They all enjoyed themselves so much that we plan to do it again in the summer time. I highly recommend this tour. It was a experience that I will be talking about for a while.

Walking and noshing ... nothing better than that

This is my third experience with Foods of New York, and they haven't failed me yet. And I don't believe they ever will. Instructions to the meeting place were accurate. The guide was on time and easy to identify. The food tastings were varied and interesting. And the guide was knowledgeable and fun ... a personality. The time flew by, and I enjoyed every facet of the few hours.

Fantastic Time!

The tour was great. Our guide not only knew the history of the area and the restaurants, but she was a local who had her own history in the neighborhood and was able to share great insights about the establishments we visited. She made sure everyone was able to enjoy the tour regardless of age or mobility level. Of course the food was fantastic, and while sufficient from a quantity standpoint, left us wanting more from a taste standpoint! My wife and I plan to try another tour the next time we are in NYC. If you are looking for a unique way to explore the city, there isn't a tastier way to do it. Cheers! JP & Julia

Was unable to attend

Our tour was scheduled for Friday, 13 Nov. We are from the Jersey Shore and a Nor'easter hit our area for 48 hours starting on Thurs evening. We had no electricity and therefore, unable to shower or dress to go into the city and take the tour. We wasted $92.00; we understand there are no refunds. My husband and I are very, very disappointed that we could not attend.

Interesting, informative, and tasty

This was a delightful tour. My tour enjoyed learning about the history of the building and this entire area of NYC which we had never visited before on previous visits. The tasting part of the tour was delightful as well. The "famous" bisquits that we tasted at Sarabeth's were the only part of the tour that was disappointing. We're from the South, and we know our bisquits. These were NOT good bisquits. The lobster bisque from The Lobster Place was outstanding, however, and our tour guide, Darrell, was worth the price of the tour.

Barrie was the best!
Fri, Nov 13  11:00 AM DianeMcGinty Female 60-69 Domestic Tourist(s) Individual
I hope I spelled Barrie's name correctly. She was an outstanding tour guide. She was very knowledgeable about Greenwich Village, and about its history. She seemed to have a great love of the Village and of NY in general. She kept us going at a good pace, and politely answered all of our questions. The stops along the way were fabulous....great samplings of food, and a nice variety of places. I really enjoyed the whole visit, and would recommend it highly.

I loved this tour. It was so informative and of course the food was amazing. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgable and I feel like I know more about the neighborhood than most local New Yorkers. Next time I am back to the city I will definitely do another one and eat at the reccommended resturaunts.

Food for Thought
Thu, Nov 12  11:30 AM genuinerisk1 Unspecified Unspecified Combination Group of Friends
Our group of nine consisted of three former New Yorkers, two Brits and visitors from Kentucky, Michigan and Massachusetts. All LOVED this tour. Our tour day was rainy and cool but nothing dampened our experience. We learned about the Village and ate our way from pizza to cookies and from a subtle cauliflower appetizer to faux BBQ'd pork at a Japanese vegetarian restaurant (and yes, you read that correctly). We learned about early Village history and it's modern development; about Washington Irving and Edna St. Vincent Millay; about Cherry Lane Theatre and basement jazz on Cornelia St. Dave, our guide was great. It is hard to please all of the people all of the time but Dave did this for more than three hours of fabulous fare and fun - even the jaded former New Yorkers were dazzled by what had been in their backyard, missed till now.

Dave - excellent Food - some not so good
Thu, Nov 12  11:30 AM CarmenDrake Female 40-49 Local Family Without Children
Dave was a terrific tour guide - enthusiastic, spoke clearly and audibly, seemed to know a lot of trivia and information about the area and the restaurants. I highly recommend him. I really enjoy Japanese food but the Japanese pseudo pork and mini bento box was very poor. I was very disappoonted in that. The rice ball at the start of the tour was not served hot enough, either. I attended a tour in late August and the food was much better. We did not do either the Japanese place or the rice ball. We had a chocolate breadstick and a thick slice of pizza instead. These were both better options.
