Small and intimate, but extremely moving

When my family of 4 got into the room, I thought to myself what have I gotten ourselves into. Its a small, quiet room with photographs and items from the Twin Towers with little numbers. The small room with a small group is what makes it even more empowering. I really like how the host talks about how the small setting is used for 9/11 survivor meetings and it provides a calming enviroment for them. The respect for the room and all that fills it is felt by all. My 13 year old daughter who was 3 1/2 during 9/11 was probably moved the most. The photographer really captured so much and describes that in his narrations.

Worth every penny and then some.

It just seemed fitting for my family to spend part of my husband's birthday at the museum. My father, uncle, cousins, husband and now son are all volunteer firefighters. They are proud of what they do and so is the family. I highly recommend taking 2 hours out of our busy days to take in the museum.

Very expensive photographic exhibition

As a family we were interested to visit the museum, hoping it would provide a deep insight into the events of 9/11. What we found however was a single loft space with (mainly) photographs of the rescue and clean up following the days and months after the event. Some of these were poignant especially hearing the stories behind them, but mostly they were just interesting. There are artefacts from ground zero, and again the background story helped. Our main issue was the price. We felt it very expensive for what we actually got. Later in the day we took a look at the preview of the memorial being put together actually at ground zero. Ten minutes in there( for the price of a donation) was more interesting and moving than anything we experienced on our trip. We don't mind paying if we think it is worth it but this, for us, really wasnt and it was nowhere near the experience we thought it would be.

An unforgettable experience - don't miss it!

Highly recommend for everyone, but children ages 12 and up will probably get more from this than those younger. An intensely personal and self paced journey which shares, through incredibly beautiful and hearfelt photography, poignant artifacts (some offered as an actual hands on ), and personal remembrance, the events and emotions of 9/11, with an emphasis on emotional healing from a personal as well as national standpoint. A small room which manages to convey and contain a HUGE experience. The self guided tour (via headphones and taped commentary of the photos and artifacts you are viewing) is a masterful way of allowing each individual to pace themselves and create their own personalized experience. Not to be missed if you are visiting NY City. Our group consisted of 8 people aged 13 through 70 +, and one and all were powerfully moved by their time here. Afterward, we took a trip down to Ground Zero and I believe the experience was made that much more meaningful by visiting the Museum beforehand.

Incredibly emotional

I did not know what to expect of this museum. I was initially surprised that it was all in 1 room. That is the reason they only except 25 people at each tour. It is on the 2nd floor of a small building in the meatpacking district of New York. It is NOT at Ground Zero site. The staff was very pleasant describing the procedure of what you were going to see. (It's really all around you anyway) The first thing you see is two videos, one of the photographer and this museum he started, second is the video of his description of some of the people he met taking the photos. His description and emotion touched me and brought back the memories I had of that fateful day. Since I am local (from NJ), that day had significance to me because my husband was at Newark airport at the time going on a plane to Chicago. When I heard a plane hit the World Trade Center I tried to call him but could not get through after several tries. I waited a few min. and listened to the radio in the car on my way back home. He finally reached me to say he was OK and to come get him at Newark. So, this event was emotional for me and I wanted to see what was done. They do not show anyone who had died, just the firemen and police going through the rescues. They have done a great job explaining all the artifacts collected and it's worth a trip if you want to know. They only give you 2 hrs which is plenty of time to view the artifacts they have. I was glad I went and would recommend it. I don't know if this museum will continue on once the one at Ground Zero is opened.

Good Reminder

The experience reminded us of the horrific day in September 2001. The hard work of the NYPD and NYFD and the number of lives lost. It is a reminder that we as Americans should stay united in the fight against terrorism.

Something every American should see

This was incredibly moving and the artifacts made you feel as though you were there. I have only 3 suggestions: Better seating, Elevate the TV. I am very short and it was very difficult to see over those taller than myself. Do not let anyone who comes in late to be seated. Right during the most moving part of the video, 4 people came in very late and really disrupted everyone. Otherwise, this was SO worth the time and money.

The Ground Zero Museum Workshop was an excellent experience. There were many beautiful photographs and stories shared. If you are interested in the recovery effort following Sept. 11, you will be glad you invested the time and money to visit this museum. The emotional topics are handled very well from Suson's photos and narration and the design of the museum to the staff leading the workshop.

Visit to Ground Zero Museum
Fri, Aug 5, 11   11:00 AM linshears Female 50-59 International Tourist(s) Individual
This museum was fantastic. It was very moving, I was close to tears even after the initial video before I had heard all the individual stories behind the photos. This is a unique collection of items, including a small part of one of the planes, coupled with first hand accounts and stories from the only official Fire Department photographer throughout the recovery period. Please go if you are in New York, it is something everyone needs to experience to get a true feeling of what it could have been like after 9/11.

Glad we visited

My husband and I are from Australia and recently went to the museum on a week long visit to New York. It was interesting to look at the photos and hear the stories behind them. It was a great way to get an understanding of what the men and women of the NYFD and the NYPD went through during the recovery period. Don't be surprised of the size of the museum, it is not the biggest museum in New York but it is packed with interesting photographs and artifacts and will take you the entire 2 hours to look at everything. It would be hard to walk away from the museum and not be touched by the devastation that happened on that tragic day.

Impersonal and small

This is one room where you watch a video and listen to prerecorded details of photographs. Could have bought a book with the same pix and descriptions for much less money, and gotten more out of it.

This was disappointing at best.

We did not know till we purchased the tickets that it was not located any where near Ground Zero. This was August. We had to wait outside the building till 5 minutes before starting time. The Museum's location is up a long narrow flight of stairs, no air conditioning. The only room the 12 min. movie and the picture display was held in was a one room apartment with about 25 people in it. The artifacts on display were good.

Everyone should see this.

Outstanding, heartbreaking photographs; compassionate and efficient staff. Both my husband and I agreed that standing in the room brought us immediately back to 9/11/01. Exhibitions such as this are of vital importance to ensure that none of us forget the horror of that day, forget the sacrifices made, or forget that we must remain vigilant. Thank you for a moving and thoughtful experience.

Marquant.

This museum workshop was an excellent experience for our family. Our children were 3, 1, and a baby to come in 2002, so this was a way to learn about history before we went to visit the site. It turns out that it was invaluable as with this year being the 10th anniversary, this was a big focus in the schools this year and many of these kids were able to understand the immensity of this attack and the sadness of this day/year. We very much appreciated the approach and the focus was not on the planes attacking the twin towers, but on the people.
