Not Ground Zero Museum

It's Not a Ground Zero Museum. It's a Gary Susan's photo Gallery. Not what I expect.

Amazing!

We are from Kansas and when our tour bus dropped us off at the actual Ground Zero site, we were suprised. At this time there wasn't anything to see or no where to basically pay our respects. We spoke to our hotel about that and they suggested we go to the Ground Zero Museum workshop. We had them immediately call and we scheduled our reservation. My husband and I, along with my parents and our 2 kids (age 6 and 9) made our way down to the museum in the meat packing district. We were a bit alarmed where we ended up and then to find it was a 1 room facility at first we thought we had been took. But 2+ hours later, I had to be pulled from the place. The interactive set up is nothing short of amazing. Both of my kids spent a lot of time going through all the different things we could listen to. It held their attention for the entire 2 hours. We had the last slot of the day so we were told we could stay as long as we liked. I found it all extremely moving. This isn't a museum describing what led up to that awful day, but a memorial to the people that worked tirelessly for 6 months after 09/11 and the people that perished that horrible day! The workers painstakingly trying to find the remains in the most respectful way they could. Amazing is how all 6 of us described it. I laughed, I cried and I was in held in AW for the entire time. I would suggest this wonderful place to anyone who can remember that fateful day in September 2001! It is a wonderful tribute to all that died and all that worked the site after the event. Gary, the photographer/artist happened to be there the day we visited (which happened to be Memorial Day 2008) and he was an amazingly genuine person. He took the time to speak to both of my kids. He didn't hover over them and worry about what they might do....he truly offered his words of help and support. We strongly suggest this place when you plan your New York tours. It is off the beaten path, but it will be the most memorable 2 hours of your trip!

Avoids the rampant political, xenophobic and rhetorical nonsense that is sadly attached to this event. Fantastic. Also, he's the only reason that you'll ever see photos of this effort, and it shaved years off his life, so go thank him and show some RESPECT, ya?

I didn't expect to see so much from behind the scenes. I had no idea about the damaged building across the street, the one the insurance companies wouldn't let any one go into for so long, or the subway track under the WTC. Its wonderful how everyone pulled together. I was only surprised that the tour didn't end at the sight, but when our tour was over and we went to ground zero I understood more as to why.

Incredible!

What an amazing museum! I was impressed by the fact that the museum was able to take such a tramatic event and display memories of that horrible day in a tasteful way. As a person who witnessed the events first hand, I was reluctant to go to the museum. But I am so glad that I did. The setting is peaceful and lets individuals come to terms with 9/11 at their own pace.

Excellent photographs with explicit commentaries

The museum was smaller than I expected but the photography was excellent and the comments by Mr. Suson really gave you a feel for the gravity of the experience. It is artfully presented and respectfully done. I did feel the tour was a bit pricey at $25 per person. It was mentioned that a portion of the proceeds go to the families of 9-11 but it was never clarified as to how much.

Learn more about that fateful day

Much has been written about September 11th. We've all read the accounts of what occured that day and we've seen pictures that have shocked us. That being said, there are stories (and images) within the story of September 11th, things that were not reported/seen in any media formats. Why? Because the media was not allowed on-site access to the World Trade Center site. However, that changed in November 2001 when Gary Marlon Suson, a New York photographer, was gained unlimited access to the site. He soon gained the trust of the police and firefighters who were involved in the cleanup/recovery. Suson's museum includes many artifacts that he was allowed to remove from the actual site. You can even hold an actual piece of World Trade Center steel, which has been shaped into a cross. The images really convey a powerful message. They show frustration, exaustion, and sadness. Every artifact and image is presented with the utmost respect and dignity. These are the accounts of a man who was there, day in and day out, right alongside the firefighters as they searched for their fallen brothers. A visit to the Ground Zero Museum Workshop will allow you to become more informed about September 11th and it's aftermath. Even more importantly, the images will provide a window to the soul of many recovery workers who gave all they had for nine months, helping to heal a strong yet bruised nation.

An incredibly rewarding few hours.. Gary's spirit and passion ooze out of the walls of this very special place. If you visit New York you must come. Be prepared to relive some of the raw emotions of 9/11. You will also be uplifted by the photos and stories of the many heroes of that day. Bravo Gary and thank you for letting us share the experiences and insights that were granted only to you..

This was my second time visiting this place and it is a very moving, powerful experience. It's really a memorial. Gary Suson is a wonderful human being and had a superb idea to create this museum. Having it in this one room that has 2 small sofas in the room and some chairs where you can just sit and take it all in, in addition to the audio and personal tour is just a perfect way to experience this. I think everybody in the universe needs to go at least once. My second time was just as moving as my first time. It is really not to be missed on a trip to NYC.

Excellent, hearwarming true stories of 9/11

The Ground Zero Museum Workshop Tour is like no other Mueseum that I've ever been to. Its intimate atmosphere allows you to get up close and personalize what happened on that September morning in 2001. The photos are unbelievable and each has its own story to tell which is told to you by the photogropher himself Gary Marlon Suson through a audio-headset. There are many artifacts to look at as well. The tour starts with a video and then is self guided. If you are interested in learning about the rescue efforts and the personal stories of 9/11 then the Ground Zero Museum Workshop is essential. We were fortunate in that on the day we went to the museum, Gary himself was there and gave us the tour. Not only is he a talented individual but he has a great heart and he shared with us so many of his personal stories as the official photographer of Ground Zero.
