my boyfriend and i went to see the castle on the way back to the city from upstate. the boat ride out to the castle was nice especially bc it was the middle of fall and the leaves were all changing. the tour of the castle was interesting. the guides mixed in interesting stories and facts that kept us engaged. it was nice to be able to wander around a little and take as many pics as you want. the views were amazing!! everyone was super nice and seemed to really love what they were doing which made for a great day!

Bannerman Cruise & Walking Tour Departing Newburgh

A fun half day excursion from Newburgh down the river by boat to Bannerman's Island. We went in October and the foliage was peaking so the views were superb. The island has the ruins of a castle and surrounding buildings that were the headquarters and home of the Bannerman family and their army surplus business. Interesting bit of history here... The tour spiel seems to elevate Mr. Bannerman to an exalted status. To me, he seemed to be an admittedly hard worker who managed to build an empire by salvaging (stealing?) munitions and supplies from battlefields and selling them to anyone with the proper amount of cash. After making a fortune, he bought this island and built a storehouse for the arms and ammo (which eventually blew up...) and a residence for his family as well as the Castle which served as HQ for the business. The guides explain how he refused to hire architects, but instead made his own drawings which were given to 'his workmen', who figured out how to build the structure so that it looked the way he wanted. No surprise then that the the castle has begun to collapse, I guess. Still, what is left is worth seeing, if only to revisit a period in NY history when such things were possible! And there is a really nice walk around the island with beautiful views. And besides. Who doesn't love a boat ride? Highly recommend;)

We really enjoyed the Bannerman Island walking tour. The scenery was beautiful, especially since it was during fall foliage season. We learned many interesting facts, and seeing the castle was amazing and sad at the same time. It would be wonderful if this castle could be saved, and restored.

Relaxing Cruise on the Hudson

The weather was not the best, but the cruise was enjoyable. I took pictures from the upper deck and saw some very interesting sites. There was an audio presentation during the cruise, which was helpful. But we were very upset at some of the other people that were very loud and playing cards. There were three ladies behind us that talked the whole two hours and did not look out the windows to enjoy the view. The drink service was very good. This was our first time visiting the Hudson River Valley. Thx for the "Cruise"

This trip was well worth doing - we drove in from eastern CT, and completely enjoyed ourselves. The tour boat was comfy, the video informative, and our tour guide quite entertaining. Bannerman Castle is an amazing example of turn of the century architecture at its most grandiose. We were happy to hear that the island is finally getting the attention it deserves.

Visited with a photography club from Connecticut. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. I understand the reasons for the limitations, but would have enjoyed closer access to the warehouse ruins.

Awesome weather and a great time. It was comfortable, informative, and friendly. It was a great way to enjoy a class reunion. The changing colors of the trees made the trip even more enjoyable. I am considering a family weekend around this cruise, next spring or fall. It was clearly stated that there is NO smoking for the sake of safety, yet a male crew member stood at the bottom of the stairs and smoked. Since it is truly a question of safety, no one should smoke, especially a crew member.
