OUR TOUR OF THE HAIGHT
Thu, Mar 27, 08   2:00 PM christinere Female 50-59 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
Well I have to say, being an old hippie from the 70's, with my husband, also an x-hippie, with our 17 year old daughter in tow with us ,forced to go of coarse: I found the Flower Power Tour quite interesting though somewhat long, over 3 hours long. The tour guide was ,shall I say ,quite entertaining in a somewhat dramatic way. Would I recomend this tour? Yes! Would my teenager recomend this tour?Yes I think she would, she really enjoyed all the shops that were recomended by our tour guide. We also ate at 1 of the restrauants she said was good and it was great! Go ahead and take a chance, go on the tour, it will certainly give you something to talk about!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

By far the worst walking tour we took in San Francisco. The tour guide (Izu ?) talked more about herself than the neighborhood (Haight Ashbury). Very little content and nothing that you couldn't find yourself on the internet. The Hippies left the Haight long ago and this tour does them no favors at all. Take Tom's tour of Muir Woods or The China Alleyways Tour (both excellent value) but avoid this tour like the plague !

Informational and Interesting

The guide was very knowledgeable and the tour seemed all inclusive of the past and present of the Haight Ashbury area. Pictures were diplayed of the areas past and time was allowed for the taking of pictures of the most historic areas. Being a person who grew up in this era I found the tour of great interest. Safe and enjoyable.

I was surprised to be greeted by Stan, as so many reviews have noted that Izu was the guide (and beloved by all). But my disappointment gave way to interest and admiration; Stan was a good guide, plain and simple. Didn't realize that he'd be giving us some history of the city and housing, so that was a bonus. The "hippy" portion of the tour was fun and quite informative. Makes you want to go back and relive the era (or live it in the first place!). The culture of the Haight is diverse and fascinating. It's sad to see some of it fade into the past, but that is the ultimate demise of history, isn't it? The length of the tour was too long, however, as we had to leave just after 1:00 to meet friends for lunch. We thought that the tour would be over by 12:00 or so at the latest, so we were starting to get a bit famished and were disappointed to have to bow out before Stan finished the tour. We wonder what we missed...? That's the only criticism; but I'm sure others looked at it as a bonus. Can't please everyone, right? All in all, a very pleasant experience that we have since recommended to several folks heading out to S.F. (And it's only been about a week!) Thanks for the memories... Sara and Bryan Michigan

Very enjoyable, but perhaps half an hour too long

This was a great tour with a knowledgeable guide. It is primarily concerned with the architectural gems around the area, scattered with good stories about characters from the 60s and 70s. The tour was advertised as 2.5 hours, but was still going on when I excused myself after 2.75 hours, and at that time looked like it would be going on for at least another half an hour.

THE GUIDE IS THE COOLEST PERSON EVER.

I absolutely loved the Flower Power Walking Tour. Our guide, Yzu, was soo cool. She told us all about how she moved to the Haight during the summer of love when she was only 14, and what it was like- she even met Jimi Hendrix! She showed us all over the area- telling us which are the best restaurants and shops (she was always honest too- like she'd let you know if the food at some place was crap). She showed us all these historical spots- like the house where the Grateful Dead lived, the house where Janis Joplin lived, and where Charles Manson lived for 6 months. She had visual guides, like awesome pictures of the area during the 60's and 70's. She also took us to the kitchen where the Hippy Gourmet does his show. The whole tour was just awesome- the guide was very well informed, funny and entertaining. Plus, her rent just went up and she needs some more customers so spread the word and take everyone you know!!

This tour was the highlight of our 9-day trip to the bay area in spite of the bad weather. We not only saw the musicians' houses, we learned of the architechture, botany, overall history, and politics of the neighborhood. Our guide was knowledgable, friendly, and enthusiastic about guiding the tour. A must-do for anyone visiting SF!

Stan

Stan is amazing! He has not only lived in the area for some time, but also traveled the US. This gave him a wider approach to help us understand why this part of San Fran is so important to US history.
