Great experience

Our "Greatful Dead" groupie tour leader was outstanding. I have already recommended the tour to 4 people at our B&B. It is more than advertised. If I were to make a recommendation to improve the tour, a little more on Jefferson Airplane would have been nice. But this is just a quibble in the total scope of the tour.

Tour by one who was there

The guide (Izu) is very entertaining--combining the high energy of a (transplanted) New Yorker with the warmth and "coolness" of a San Franciscan--and her knowledge of 1960s and 70s Haight-Ashbury (counter)culture is vast. Of course I am influenced by the fact that I am in the same generation as Izu and am myself fascinated by the 1960s. But it adds a lot to the tour that Izu has lived in the Haight since 1971, has participated in many of the events she describes, and knows most of the people she talks about. She could be called the mayor of the Haight.

Architectual history tour: recommended for adults

I liked viewing the buildings and learning the history, but my 13-year-old son was a little disappointed, as he was hoping to see more of the past reflected in the present. Set your expectations appropriately, follow the recommendations and dress in layers (especially if the fog is in and the wind is blowing!), and it will be an enjoyable walk around one of the City's most famous areas. Thank you!

I do not consider myself a reviewer. What I really enjoy may not be your bag. However, I do know that our tour guide, Stan, was very knowledgeable about the Haight-Ashbury area, which provided us with a positive (and fun!) experience. Stan brought along a number of photos, showing views of yesteryear in the Haight. He explained each as we walked along. Our tour man showed us the various "famous" houses of a number of deceased "celebrities" (i.e. Janis Joplin, Jack Kerouac, Buffy from Family Affair TV show.) A highlight for my husband and I was the Grateful Dead house, where the bandmates had hung out together once upon a time. The architecture of the Victorian homes was pointed out, along with estimates of current costs of the real estate. Stan did not leave a (rolling) stone unturned as our group wandered the Haight, garnering cool information. It was the grooviest! Often times, with tours, one has certain expectations...and you hope you dont have a could-care-less guide, who is totally disinterested in what they are presenting. The Flower Power Walking Tour exceeded our expectations because Stan was just an all-around good guy who seemed to actually LIKE/LOVE what he was doing. My husband and I certainly appreciated his obvious concern for giving a far-out tour of Haight-Ashbury!

Excellent view into our past

We signed up for the tour with much hope and enthusiasm, We wanted to step back into time for a short period. Much to our joy, the walking tour provided much more than what we expected! Our tour guide was a local celebrity that knew the area like the back of his hand... so much nastalgia...so much history! We recommend to all... thanks Stan for a job well done.

Long history walk, but worth it

My boyfriend and I traveled to San Fransisco for the first time and though it'd be beneficial to learn more about the history of the Summer of Love. Although we thought our tour guide tended to overexagerate about herself a lot, the tour was really interresting. We went to some pretty historical places (The GRATEFUL DEAD HOUSE!!!) and learned more about the San Fransisco history than about our own home town. The tour guide is very informative and can pretty much answer any question you have relating to the 60's. but then again, isn't that's what she's there for? The tour ended up being longer than anticipated, but she pointed out the good places to eat so it more than made up for it. Good tour if you have little knowledge about the Summer of Love

The small Flower Power Walking Tour ad located in some tourist blurb led to our first and most favourite day out in SF. Our group met promptly at 9.30 on a very cold June morning but very quickly Asus our guide has us pacing along towards the Haight regailing us with both factual information and amusing anecdote, thoughts of the cold weather soon dissipated. If you want to know where Patty Hearsts safe house was, or where Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix hung out, or where the notorious Hells Angels lived ( opposite the Grateful Dead house) then this is the tour for you! If your children are interested in the birth of the Hippy Movement or The Summer of Love bring them along to this tour - it's a fabulous morning out for the whole family, and the vibe along Haight Ashbury remains cool.........oh and finally The Hippies Were Right!

add this to your S.F. "must-do" list

my wife, our 15 year old and myself took this walking tour and enjoyed every minute. our guide was isu and she brought her personal insight and experiences of the summer of love to our tour. we came away knowing more about "the haight", the feelings and emotions of hippy movement and feeling like we'd made a new friend in S.F. our expectations were surpassed in every way ... this is the "real deal", including impromptu meetings with other residents of the haight who were there then and live there now. the walking was easy, but would recommend comfortable shoes and be sure to dress for the typically unpredictable S.F. weather.
