I really enjoyed this tour and would strongly recommend it to anyone (of all ages). Our guide arrived on time and instantly energized the group. She had so many great stories (she even went about 30 min over the scheduled time- maybe allow yourself some extra time if you're scheduling other activities or tours just in case- but I'm definitely not complaining- I could have listened to her all day!).

The tour guide who I think spells her name Susie backwards and drops off a few letters and had the best NY accent I have ever herad was really great. She new her stuff, was enthusiastic, engaged the group and certainly added to our visit. Next time I visit I want to do the tour with the right wing ladies from New England. Loved the stories of that group. I will also now brush up on the Grateful Dead now I can put them in context.Thank you so much. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Had a Great time

I picked the worst day weatherwise in SF's history so it seems. Hurricane like weather beating down on the bay area. Hotel Awning's were flying off. But that didn't stop my flower Power tour of Haight and Ashbury. Our guide Izu and hippie who lived in the Haight and Ashbury in the 60's changed the tour around so we could sit comfortably in a beautiful Victorian home in the H&A neighborhood. There we were 5 of us and Izu sitting around a coffee table listening to Izu tell stories of life in the 60's in the H&A. Just Beautiful. We got a tour of the house and the last 15 minutes was spent outside looking at Grateful Dead's, Hell's Angels and Janis Joplins former homes. I would definately recommend this tour and had a greater appreciation of Hippie culture and philosophy after doing the tour. -Phil

what a wonderful tour

What a wonderful tour! We live an hour away and I've always wanted to see the Haight but since it's not 1967 anymore it was not clear what there was/would be to see. Times were different then but the strong feeling of community that must have been present then seems to live on in the neighborhood. Walking through the neighborhood, we kept encountering people who knew our tour guide and she was always ready with stories about the neighbors, such as the later owners of the Grateful Dead house stepping over the impromptu shrine set up on the steps after Jerry Garcia's death. We had two four-year-olds with us and they got along fine (mostly because we didn't stay in any one place long but kept moving). Most of the discussion went over their head -- the only thing really inappropriate was hearing Magnolia's last name but they don't seem to have caught that. Lots of history / who's who and all the stories/anecdotes contributed to building up a powerful impression of the neighborhood. I keep saying that word but it really felt like we were meeting the neighbors at a particular slice in time and that the right response was to go get involved in our own neighborhood back home. (Hey, about some things, The Hippies were right!) The guide was early, no worries about finding the group or hooking up with them. I only wish I'd seen more of Hippie Hill ... it's right at the starting point but not part of the actual tour. Highly recommended.

A Great Experience-Worth every cent!

We saw the tour advertised and thought it was a great idea. We love San Francisco and every trip back always take the time to discover something new about the city. No trip to San Francisco would be complete without a trip to the Haight district, to include this very thorough, informative, and fun tour. Our tour guide Stannous has lived in the Haight district since the 70's and was a plethora of infomation. As much as he said how enjoys giving the tours, it is evident in his knowledge, the pictures, and his pure love for San Francisco that comes through during the tour. An added bonus is to get a peek at the inside of one of the unique homes in the area.

I took my 21 year old daughter on the tour with Izu. Haight is a very bustling, colorful, exciting place, still looking like the 60's. Izu was fantastic! She was there in the 60's! Very knowledgable and organized. In addition to bringing us to sites we wouldn't have found on our own, she also had many visuals (old pictures, retro restaurant menus, etc). This tour gave us so many details and insight into the area then and now. She gave us shopping and dining tips also. Izu is a real character, eccentric, eclectic....perfect for this tour!

My friend and I took the Walking Tour with our Guide "Izu," and absolutely loved it. Izu was funny, knowledgable and entertaining. Would highly recommend this tour. Her personalized stories and knowledge of "Summer of Love" trivia made this a most memorable experience.

Definitely a must in San Francisco

A trip to San Francisco is not complete without a visit to Haight Ashbury. Of course, the neighborhood is not the same today as it was 40 years ago. But with the tour given by a bonafide hippie who was there and lives there today, it really comes alive with its history, people and intimate details of the events that took place there. Izu, our hippie tour guide was a real delight. Outgoing and fun loving, she really shares her passion with the area and the ideals of the hippie movement. No, she won't offer you pot, but she might share a ginseng or ginko biloba capsul with you. At the end she will send you off with a hug and peace sign.

Cool Tour of Rock & Roll History in Haight Ashbury
Tue, Nov 27, 07   9:30 AM eric_grove Female 40-49 International Tourist(s) Family Without Children
We really loved Yzu's* enthusiasm and cool stories of the neighborhood. She is the walking history of Haight Ashbury so is really really perfect to lead the tours. Loved the stories and history of the Hippie movement, Rock and Roll and the environment today. The only think I would have liked to hear a bit more about was the architecture but maybe that was not the context of this trip. All our thanks for a really fun morning.
