Izu the Awesome
Tue, Dec 30, 08   9:30 AM madrick Female 30-39 International Tourist(s) Family Without Children
Izu was great! Although she was in a wheel chair due to an injury, she was incredibly enthusiastic. She had a great first hand knowledge of the neighbourhood and a keen interest in it's continued evolution. She was very funny, warm & welcoming, giving us a true sense of what a "dyed in the wool hippie" was and still is. Thank you Izu, Ecko and especially thank you Benny! My new little friend who wouldn't last 5 mins in cold Canada! Tanya & Kevin Madrick

If you are thinking about taking this tour, stop thinking and just book it! It was one of the best tours I have ever done, and when considering how inexpensive the tour is, it's really remarkable! The tour guide Izu was phenomenal and unforgettable and meeting the owner of the tour Pam was a real treat as well. This tour couldn't come more highly recommended. These are wonderful people and a wonderful tour.

I took my 19 year old son and 18 year old nephew with me on this tour. Izu was a lot of fun and very knowledgeable. The boys and I both loved the tour and Izu. I definitely recommend this if you are going to S.F. It was a lot of fun.

As a local, I learnt many interesting and fun facts about my own neighborhood, and it wasn't just about the Summer of love and Jerry Garcia. It was time very well spent. The guide, Izu, was fascinating, very knowledgeable and very interesting. She has a unique and wonderful personality.

A sensational experience!

This walking tour is very highly recommended. Our guide, Izu, was just wonderful & was very much a part of the tour experience with her terrific enthusiasm & great knowledge about the Haight & it's history. The best part of the tour was that is covered the most important parts of the area's history from musical, cultural & architectural perspectives. The trip to the Hippee Musuem was just great! If you go to San Francisco & have any interest at all in the 60's then you just have to do this tour - it is a great 3 hours! Phil Australia

nice history & music background walkthrough

the walk was short but there's a lot to be told. there were several memorable buildings in the hippie years & are still standing. I liked the end where we walked through Haight street & the museum. the rest of the time, Imu (sp?) talked a lot about the hippie's music history. if you have 2.5 hours to spare, its pretty interesting.

"What a Long and Strange Trip is was!!!"

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the Flower Power tour. Our guide--Stan--was quite knowledgable about the Haight-Ashbury district and the "Summer of Love." Being of an age where we remember the 60's quite vividly, the tour was quite meaningful for us. Indeed, it was three hours well-spent! Michael Rosco Perth Amboy, NJ

Learn So Much in Just a Few Hours!

Was with my mother-in-law and a friend from the UK, who is a huge fan of music history. . .we thoroughly enjoyed our guide, Stan, who taught us more than we knew before about San Francisco history, the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, and the musicians and people who populated these streets from the 1960's to present. We met up with friends who are natives of the S.F. area the next night for dinner, and they commented, "wow, we've been living here for years and you sound like you learned more about the area than we ever have!" So that is a huge compliment to our guide, who was entertaining as well as informative as we strolled the streets of the Haight for 2 1/2 hours. The $20 for the ticket was money well-spent!!

My wife and I both adored Izu and her very informative tour through the Haight Ashbury region. We were both born in the 60s, and though not old enough to have participated and not having grown up in the West Coast, we are old enough to remember the great music and vibe that came out of there. Izu took us through all the famous haunts, and her stories, taken from actual experience, were wonderful. Our fellow passengers on the tour were also a lot of fun - I will never look at lasagna in the same way again. All the stories were there - the Greatful Dead, Janis Joplin.... It gave us a unique appreciation of the 1967 Summer of Love, as well as a poignant sadness of what has been lost since then. The Haight is a great region, that is brimming with history and some very impressive (albeit sadly expensive) architecture. San Francisco is a very unique city, and this tour just shows why.

This tour was the best part of San Francisco!

Even if you aren't a Dead Head, you will enjoy the history of the Summer of Love. Izu is a great storyteller and had much to say about the people she knew back then. She even showed pictures of what the neighborhood was like back in the day. Of course my new husband enjoyed talk of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead house but he and Izu shared conversations about "the talking Lasagna" and other things you see when you are experiencing psychadelics. It was a great experience and full of history. If you only do one tour in San Fran this is the one to do.

This was the perfect thing for me to do on a Tuesday morning in San Fran..... a wonderful neighborhood with lots of color....... the area/architecture is so beautiful. The tour guide has spunk and it was apparent to me that she loves what she does and where she does it. She led the tour to all the spots I had expected to see and told us, yes, what is most likely 80% fact and the rest "rumor", but who doesn't want to hear about Charles Manson hanging out on the front porch of his yellow house? I'm a tourist! I took the guide's recommendation and ended my tour with stop at CHA CHA CHA's for lunch/sangria. Yummy and great decor...... The weather was "oh so good", I met new people, and I got to see where Janis Joplin (one of my favorites) shacked up. Yes, I had great day.................

Hippie Tour Not Quite Out of Sight
Tue, Sep 23, 08   9:30 AM bscowler Male 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Individual
While the tour guide was knowledgeable regarding the history of the Haight, some aspects of the tour were troublesome: - The tour did not start in the location specified in the instructions, which almost lead to me and another participant to miss the tour. - The area where the tour started smelled like fresh doggy doo, and we spent fifteen minutes there holding our noses as the tour guide told tales of the 19th century Haight, seemingly oblivious to the putrid odor. - In the early stages of the tour the guide told a story about a previous participant who'd started the tour in fear that he'd have to get high to appreciate the tour, but who - in the end - was so pleased that he could remain "straight" that he gave her a "really big tip" and lots of hugs. There was a noticeable feeling of uneasiness amongst the participants as we felt like we'd just been subversively instructed to tip the guide at the end of the tour; something I don't think anyone had planned to do. - The guide was quick to point out that she'd only been in the Haight in the 1960's while she was 14 years old and on vacation with her parents, and didn't actually move there until the early 1970's, yet she consistently referred to the 1960's Haight experience as something she'd witnessed first-hand. Her comment that "the people who moved to the Haight during the Summer of Love were hard-working kids who weren't looking for hand-outs" was simply naive. - Overall, I'd recommend the tour for anyone who has an interest in the 1960's Haight Ashbury experience, but keep in mind that what you'll hear is around 80% factual and 20% legend and rumor.
