Great way to see Height & Ashbury
Fri, Nov 9, 07   11:00 AM chrisl Female 30-39 International Tourist(s) Family With Children
We can definitely recommend this tour if you are interested in the Height & Ashbury area and would like to learn more about the hippie culture and its history. The guide was excellent and very enthusiastic. She had many interesting and personal stories to share. Our 1 year old son slept through the whole tour, which was good. No problem taking a stroller.

The 60's come alive!

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the 60's era because she was a part of "happenings" in the Haight. Her personal touch gave the tour an added flair.

I can't imagine a better guide for this tour than Izu. Well-informed, charming, personable and a bona fide native. Well worth the money.

My thoughts on the Haight-Ashbury tour

Good morning! A friend and I took the Haight-Ashbury walking tour on Friday, 2 November at 11 a.m. Our guide was Izu Interlandi; there were only five of us in the party and Izu was able to give a more intimate walking tour for us. My friend and I had done our own walking tour of the Haight in 2005, based on guide books, and got no real sense of its streets but Izu knows the Haight inside and out from her own groovy past and her enthusiasm, love and gossip for this now-historic neighborhood was catagious. Since the Haight of 2007 is no longer what it was 40 years ago, it was good for Izu to bring it all back to our little group - who would have guessed that history could be such FUN? I heartily recommend the Haight-Ashbury walking tour, especially if Izu is to be your guide - and, again, the smaller the group, the richer the tour (thus, November with its reduced crowds will be an especially good time to go!). Interesting Stroll

The tour was very interesting. As a teenager who lived in LA during the late 1960s it was fun to see the places which I'd heard about for years as the crucible of the Summer of Love. In LA at that time we had the Sunset Strip, Pandora's Box, Laurel Canyon, and local groups such as the Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, the Doors, and Love. Perhaps some commentary contrasting the two rival West Coast hippie phenomenon would delight the tourists. I would be interested in more information concerning the music and drug scene in the Haight during those days. A suggestion would be to assemble a small photo booklet with before and after pictures of various buildings and places taking the tourist back to the 1960s. As a real estate consultant, I would have liked some data on price levels then and now. In LA those data can be researched via the Assessor's office. I don't know how one conducts such research in San Francisco. Our tour guide did not mention much about the Free Clinic. It was an integral part of the Haight experience I'm told. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Thank you. It brought back many pleasant memories. Otis Hackett

A great tour with a knowledgable and enthusiastic guide. We both rated this as the best thing we did in San Fransisco.

fun, interesting, great SF history & architecture

it was a prefect day for walking around, just for starters. The guide was a bit late and the tour ran overtime. I guess it was on "Haight Time." but the guide should really arrive early so that the whole grp is not standing around wondering where she is and whether she is going to show. It was fun to hear the history and see the houses, many of which are magnificent. But the guide, Ysu, is somewhat egotistical and self-promotional, which I could do without. it is definitely good that she is a local and a life-long hippie, but the tour is a bit too much about her (tho she does know her stuff and does make it colorful and memorable).

Great Tour!

What really inspired us to go on this tour was the musical history aspect. However, we were also treated to architecture, area history, and culture of the Haight-Ashbury district. We would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone who is visiting the San Francisco area. Thanks again Ezu!

Great Tour with fun tour guide

The tour was very informative for someone who is interested in victorian architecture, and music from the 60's as well as the entire undertone of the 60's. There were some things that I knew I would see but, our tour guide IZU showed us things that I didn't know I would see. I would have to say that was the most interesting part of the tour. If you are inclined to disliking a tour that is sprinkled with political overtones, then I would suggest not taking this tour, but other than that my wife and I had a blast. IZU was warm, funny, and easy to talk to. If you like music, especially classic, or progressive rock, then I highly reccomend this tour, just to see the photos in the hippie museum, as well as some buildings that influenced some of the greatest rock and roll tunes ever recorded. It's the kind of tour that will make you think, weather you agree with the beliefs of hippies or do not. The point is that it will make you think, and when you are free to think, you can be free to form your own opinion. I highly reccomend!

I would recommend this tour for people who want to have an idea of what was special about the Haight Ahsbury area in the 60s and the history and renaissance of that neighborhood that remains otherwise quite rundown and would not be very interesting otherwise. Your guide will ahve for you many anecdotes and knows his botanics (no not only that kind- lol -the neighborhood actually has a huge variety of trees he will eb happy to tell you about), so whether you are a fan of the counter culture movement, architecture, Janis, Jimi or the Grateful Dead or just want a 3+ hour walk (yes you do need to like to walk... A LOT!) you should enjoy this tour. Fun and informative.

I had a great recommendation from a friend about this tour and I signed up on line as I was going to San Francisco to visit my son . The guide was beyond boring. He was dressed indirt cut off jeans and t-shirt reading "I'm boring"! Very apropo!! He spent much too long explaining things like misspellings on the sidewalk street names, tree varieties, and house architecture -- no mention of the hippy era. My son and I left after an hour and a half ...we were waiting for it to get better, but it didn't. It was a total waste of time and money!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Izu and plan to return to the area and spend a weekend. I recommend that tour participants leave plenty of time after the tour to shop at the local businesses and dine in the local restaurants.

what a fantastic tour
Tue, Oct 9, 07   9:30 AM susieloge Female 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Family With Children
My husband and I took the tour with our 24 year old daughter and her boyfriend. We all equally enjoyed the tour. Izu did a FANTASTIC job. She was very informative, fun and interesting. We have been to the Haight district quite a few times in the past and have really enjoyed walking around and seeing everything and wondering what it would have been like living there in the sixties. This tour gave us a great insight into that and showed us many places of interest. It was so much fun talking with Izu and hearing her first hand experiences living there. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone.
