| I had a great time on the tour with Izu, a woman with a New York accent who lived for many years in the Haight-Ashbury district... She led us to see some of the wonderful architecture, pointed out where Janis Joplin lived, showed us the famous 710 house where the Grateful Dead lived, and gave us a touch of history on the Diggers, the communes in the area, and even shared with us about the soup kitchen and the underprivileged kids who were learning culinary arts and then serving their efforts to the homeless in the area. My personal favorite, however, was that I won a prize on the tour! Izu started singing and I was able to state who sang the song as soon as she started singing it, having grown up listening to the Woodstock LPs that my parents had... My girlfriend, who lives about 30 min. from the Bay area, also went and was surprised to learn a lot of the history of the area, and I even got to share with Izu one of my favorite memories of Country Joe McDonald, from a Pepsi commercial back in '94, when they did the 25th anniversary concert of Woodstock. Definitely a great tour, and I know I would have passed right by some of my favorite musicians' hangouts if I didn't take the tour... My most memorable moment, though, was walking down in front of a shop on either Haight or Stanyan, and seeing 2 guys passing a joint back and forth between each other...The difference being that these two guys were medical marijuana users...Things have changed, and yet somehow, they still remain the same. | ||||||

| This is the best tour to take when in San Francisco! The tour guide is very friendly and quite the character ~ she made it a very enjoyable experience for all. She knows what she is talking about and provides interesting stories and knowledge tidbits that you will not hear anywhere else. Regardless of whether you remember the 60s or were not even born yet - you will have a great time!!!!! | ||||||

| I can't imagine not taking the guided walking tour! Having only limited Haight Ashbury knowledge from my musical enthusiasm, I was delighted with the depth of our tour. Stanley gave such color and depth and background we truly experienced the past. Loved the visuals (photos) from days gone by. Loved the neighborhood feeling, allowing us "in" for a few hours. Especially enjoyed things we would never have seen or learned. The murals, and the in-depth descriptions of same. Getting a look inside the Bed and Breakfast with the dining room dedicated to Haight Ashbury history. The architectural aspects even outside of my "rock and roll" interests was informative and interesting. And, after experiencing Haight Ashbury in such detail, we went straight to the box office at the Marines Memorial Theatre to buy tickets for the show "love Janis" that evening. What a way to end our visit to San Francisco! The show was fabulous. The musical performance outstanding. I highly recommend capping off the Flower Power walking tour in this way! From our observence, there are two suggestions I would offer: #1. a tiny, unobstructive, eensy weensy something (maybe a Flower Power logo on a little stand) sign at the corner where we were to meet for the beginning of the tour. Being strangers in a strange land, myself and others were questionning if we were in the right place. #2. placing your brochures at the Marines Memorial Theatre during the remaining production of "love Janis"... and handing out their brochures during the Flower Power tour. It was the icing on the cake! | ||||||

| Good fun, Izu was definitely a character who knew lots of background information and quite clearly loved what she was talking about. Not a strenous walk at all, but a great way to see a really cool neighbourhood. Good length of time and definitely worth the money. If you have even a passing interest in the subject matter, you'll enjoy the talk. | ||||||

| I had signed up to take this tour alone while my husband was in town on business. As it turned out, his meeting was cancelled so he took the bus to meet me when I was finished. I ended up running into him before the tour started. I, then, went to meet my tour group at the specified location. Ezu greeted myself and the other tour participant. She is so very friendly and enthusiastic. It really is infectious. She then encouraged me to go and get my husband so he could go along. She literally has first hand knowledge about the Haight and it's history. Oh, the stories she has to relate. I strongly recommend this tour for anyone who is interested in rock n' roll--or in American History for that matter.. GO!!! You won't regret it. | ||||||

| My husband and I brought our 2 teenagers on the tour. We feel that our guide, Stan, gave us more information about the neighborhood than we could have gotten anywhere else. It was a good time for each of us. Stan was witty and seemed to know everyone in the neighborhood, past and present. He was very friendly, after the tour was over he offered us tips on how to make other parts of our vacation better. The portion of the tour at the "psychedelic museum" was slightly disappointing, it needed either more time (we didn't get the 'run through' of the black and white photos on the wall that the owner, Pam, said she should do and then got distracted) or less talk about her family and how they bought the house and run the inn. Overall it was definitely worth the time and money to take the tour. | ||||||

| This tour was the highlight of my wife and my short stay in San Francisco our tour guide was Isus and she was fabulous she brought an air of informality to the tour and was amusing as well as being very informative the tour should be a "MUST" for anyone who has an interest in the Haight Ashbury experience as it was all brought to life by our guide | ||||||

Entertaining Walking Tour of Haight Ashbury Area

| My wife and I recently took the walking tour of the Haight Ashbury area on a Saturday morning. The tour included the past homes/apts of the Grateful Dead, Hell's Angels, Country Joe McDonald, Janis Joplin and Jimy Hendrix, etc. Seeing where these past rock stars lived was very interesting, but what really made the tour special was the stories that were told as we walked along. Our guide Issuzu (sp?) really did a great job describing what was going on in this area in the late 1960's. Issuzu was living in this area at the time and through her experience living there, I felt I gained better insight to the hippy movement and specific people living in the area. Issuzu also made recommendations on shops and restaurants to visit in the area. My wife and I highly recommend this walking tour which last approx. 2 1/2 hours. The walk was very easy. Don't forget to take your camera. | ||||||

| I did this tour on Saturday 23rd Sept '06. There was a small group of 5 doing the tour that morning. The guide is a lady called Izu who has lived in the area for about 30 years. She is quite a character. We bumped into several of her friends while doing the trip and almost felt part of the community by the end of the tour. The tour is scheduled to last 2 hours 30 mins and does not involve a lot of walking. Izu will bring you to the main points of interest in the area and explain the history surrounding them. The tour also involves a stop off in the "psychedelic museum", a friend's house with artifact's of the 1960's. Not being American, I knew only a little of the Haight history. This tour gave me a great insight into the area & period - I've even ordered a Grateful Dead CD as a result of it! I strongly recommend this tour. | ||||||

| Our tour guide was Izu, who has lived in the Haight-Ashbury since 1971 and also visited in 1967 with her parents as a child. The things she told us could only come from 'the real deal" and everyone was very entertained and came away wanting more, even though Izu didn't finish until we had covered every question. I can honestly say that this was my best part of my trip to San Francisco and I feel more educated about the area and more inclined to walk the area on my own. People like Izu are hard to find because they tell you the truth and the little-known facts. We finished the tour by going inside a house which is actually in the famous Grateful Dead photo with them at the street sign for Haight-Ashbury. Give yourself a more than few hours for this tour but you'll come away thinking about it for years - And if you're a huge fan of the bands, actors and music of the area, it will be glued to your heart forever. | We greatly enjoyed this tour--and appreciated Pam Brennan's eyewitness accounts and personal stories about Haight Ashbury when hippies were at their height. Also enjoyed hearing about the changes the Haight has experienced over the years--for better and worse. Have one suggestion about organization: Suggest routing the first half of the tour to the "main" sights on Haight Street, taking a break in the middle (at Pam's house)--then going to the remaining stops. During our tour, the break came about 2/3 or 3/4 through the alloted time, and we saw the main sights at the end of the tour--which made that part of the tour seem a bit rushed. Overall, though, we loved the tour; it totally met my expectations. And it's comforting to know there are still people like Pam around--who embodies the best of the 60s. | ||||||

| I just had a very enjoyable tour with Pam. Yes, she emphasized the political activism, but only because that was central to the whole hippie movement. As she pointed out, these were poor kids who were "beat" with the whole capitalistic system and trying hard to create something better. At the time Haight was a poor neighborhood so that's why they gravitated there. They fought the Viet Nam war because it was unfair and decimating them - not the rich kids. They minimized working (for money) because they felt that distracted people from more important values - like taking care of each other. We can't understand the 60's without understanding these things. And even now, they are trying to run a highway smack through the Haight! Speaking as one who was there, Pam is what it was about. | ||||||

| The perfect way to appreciate Haight-Ashbury is a guided tour by one of the original Hippies that have called this place home since the Sixties - a walk through the past, the present, and the future of this fascinating suburb of San Francisco. I would highly recommend this tour. One consideration for improving the tour: perhaps a once a month (or bi-weekly) tour that concentrates on a specific element of the Haight in more detail, i.e. Janis, The Grateful Dead, The Summer of Love...this would not only capture more interest but also promote 'repeaters'. | ||||||

| An authentic "trip" into the San Fran of the late 60's. This is the kind of raw, real history they DON'T teach you in school (but should). By far the coolest, most unstuffy tour I've ever been on - and actually one of the most informative. And a MUST for any Dead Head, Joplin or Hendrix fan. | ||||||
