Great Albeit a Little Long
Tue, Aug 18  9:30 AM peterzerve Male 30-39 Local Group of Friends
Our tour guide was funny and possessed an incredible knowledge of just about everything related to the tour. My only suggestion would be to shorten the tour by about twenty or thirty minutes. Highly recommended. Although my friends were visitors, I am a local of 2.5 years and I learned a great deal on the tour.

fun

I enjoyed the tour but it went over by almost an hour. I thought less information on the arcitecture and more on the 60's and the summer of love would have been better. I did learn more about the city, the Haight and I will come back just to hang out and shop in that area.

Fantastic experience, wonderful guide!

The tour of Haight Ashbury exceeded our expectations! My husband, our 16-year-old son and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our NY-born tour guide Izu was in the Haight in 1967, was at Woodstock and then returned to SF for college where she lived in a commune in the Haight. Anyone can recite information about locations and dates, but only a person who has lived in the Haight more than 30 years can relate firsthand experiences! Izu has tons of wonderful stories. My favorite story was during the Summer of Love, Izu awakened to awesome music. She threw a coat over her pajamas, put on her shoes and walked down to the Panhandle. Jimi Hendrix had showed up unannounced and was playing on a flatbed trailer. Izu knows her stuff! Her love for the Haight, its history and its residents -- past and present -- resonates during the tour.

Izu is awesome!

We loved our tour guide, Izu! She had fun stories and a lot of knowledge about the area. It was cool to hear about the hippie days from someone who had been there. We learned a lot and definitely recommend it.

Fun, if you were once a hippy

I didn't know much about the music or the stories back then, so going with my husband was actually a treat for him. Our tour guide is a very interesting woman and definitely liberal. If you are hard core republican or Christian, don't go. I wish our tour guide would tell us about the Flower Power, but she was all about the music and Jerry Garcia. My husband enjoyed it, although he's not a Grateful Dead fan neither. Oh, if you want to go to Magnolia for some microbrewed beer, their service SUCKS! They might have very good bitter, but we will not trade our dignity for it.

Haight Ashbury from someone who has lived the life

My wife and I really enjoyed the tour of the hood. Our guide "Izu" was a regular in the area who new a lot of the main characters like Jerry Garcia and Pigpen! Her stories of people tripping on LSD and jumping off balconies, the 4:20 clock...etc....made the tour well worth the money. Although it only lasted a few hours I feel like I have a better understanding of the area. Well worth the time and money.

I lived in the Upper Haight for many years & recently took this tour as part of a nostalgia binge. Izu really exemplified the Haight & its history.

a great time was had by all. our tour guide put everyone at ease w/her jokes and vibrant spirit. It felt personable and not manufactured at all. At the end of the tour and after hugs all around, we had lunch w/2 other couples on the tour. This tour will bring the spirit of the times into perspective for you. HIGHLY recommended.

Our tour guide Izu is great. Shares the stories and history of the Haight, the people and the houses. It says 2 1/2 hours. Our went well over 3. We had such a good time learned alot. You can tell Izu cares alot about the area and is involved in its presversation. See it before it all the mom and pops are bought out.

Great information which took me right back in time

Izu really was able to add the personal touch to the tour: she's lived it and is still there! I loved the historical information about the people and the music as well as the anecdotes of her own interactions with the folks at the time. The tour was a bit long and I was very happy to sit down in the dining room/museum on the last stop of the tour and could easily have skipped that whole part.

A MUST FOR ANYONE INTERESTED

A trip to the Haight is superficial at best without someone like our guide who takes the lid off and goes through the wonderful contents and explains them all. The fact that SHE WAS THERE BACK THEN, in combination with her joyful, casual, sincere enjoyment in guiding allows for a truly unique experience. Not only is it always fun to "re-live" those times, and not only were we "re-living" it at ground central, but she provided first hand insight and stories which made the "re-living" memorably special. I wanted my kids to understand a bit of that special time; I cannot think of a more effective way at accomplishing this.

OK interesting but long
Tue, Aug 4  9:30 AM vmansley1 Female Unspecified International Tourist(s) Individual
To me it seemed too long. I could have managed without the talk on the species of trees. The meeting place was in a suspect area as McDonalds car park was full of homeless people and one 'crazed' one threw his pancakes and his carton of maple syrup went all over me!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actual 'flower power' details were informative and I enjoyed it. Loved browsing the boutiques afterwards.

Great for Deadheads and hippies of any age!
Fri, Jul 31  11:00 AM bbanfield Female 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Group of Friends
Even though I had visited the Haight several times before, I thoroughly enjoyed the Haight Ashbury tour with Izu. She was very knowledgeable about the history and architecture of the neighborhood, and showed us the former home of the Diggers along with a house Charles Manson lived in. Yipes! Of course, there were lots of musical landmarks. I'm a Deadhead, so I was glad to see the Grateful Dead house at 710 Ashbury, but I hadn't realized that Janis Joplin, Country Joe, and Jimi Hendrix all had lived in the next block north. We also visited a hippie museum in an old house that had a wonderful kitchen and lots of photos and memorabilia of the 60s. I really got a good feel of what it's like to live in the Haight today. There's only one thing that would have made this tour more enjoyable - a visit from Benny the dachshund. I heartily recommend it to any Deadhead or anyone who still believes in giving peace a chance, and I bid you good night!

Haight-Ashbury was one of the highlights of SF
Tue, Jul 28  9:30 AM tonywray Male 40-49 International Tourist(s) Couple on a Date
Every moment of our tour of Haight-Ashbury with Ezu was magical. She had everyone listening eagerly to every story she told of the neighborhood and the famous people who visited and lived there over the years. We laughed until we cried at her stories. Her tour was one of the highlights of our visit to San Francisco. Thank you, Ezu.

Great time

This was a great walking tour. Izu is a trip and a half all by herself. She is knowledgeable and calls it like she sees it. One of the best tour guides I have ever had. The Haight was never about being politically correct. It was about expressing yourself. She certainly does and it adds a great touch to the whole tour. Kept us all laughing while showing us around. It will run long. So be prepared to walk a lot and spend extra time. DSM
