Love and Peace still lives in Haight Ashbury

I found the tour highly enjoyable and informative. It was a great way to get a real feeling for what it must have been like to be a part of the Flower Power 1960's. Izu is the perfect person to lead the tour because she is such an enthusiastic and warm person with a great sense of humour as well as being very knowledgable. I would recommend the tour to anyone who wants to get a taste of the area in the company of a person who was actually there when it was happening. It was certainly a highspot on my visit to San Francisco.

Hours of Flower Power

The "Flower Power" walking tour of Haight Ashbury was fun and engaging. The trippy history of this colorful area of San Francisco was brought to life through the guide's storytelling. While all the extra storytelling was appreciated by the group, the tour did go on an hour longer than estimated, so you may want to consider this while planning your tour. Leave extra time to revisit some of the spots that are pointed out throughout the tour. There is much to see and do in this area and I'd definitely recommend sticking around for a bite to eat after the tour and some window shopping along Haight Street. Transportation from downtown via the Route 71 bus was convenient with a stop right across the street from the group's meeting place on Stanyan Street. Enjoy!

Well done...behind the scenes

My boyfriend and I really liked this tour, and eventhough he is not really into hippie stuff, he did get a lot out of it. If you walked around Haight-Ashbury on your own, you wouldn't come nearly close enough to finding all the cool historical details that were pointed out to us. Our guide Izu was great. She really knew the area and made the tour as personalized as possible, pointing out things she experienced in the 60s and 70s. She also had run-ins with Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin, and had mutual friends with the Dead and the Hells Angels, so stories about these guys abound. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys history or architecture, or who is just looking for a unique, colorful tour in the area.

Overly Grateful Dead and political

Overall we enjoyed this tour. The leader, Izu , was entertaining and knowledgeable. Having said that she dwelt on the connection with the Grateful Dead , clearly knowing them. We were interested in other buildings in the area, such as the Jefferson Airplane house which we never saw. The stop at Pam Brennan's house only served as a useful loo break. Pam herself added nothing to the tour and bored us to death with some half baked waffle over drugs and verged on the controversial poltically. While we agree there is a political context to what happened in the 60s she made some comments about present day society which might have offended some ( lthough not us because they were such drivel as to be meaningless ) and had nothing to do with the area and what had happened in it. The architecture part of the tour was fascinating as was the social history. Without Pam we would have thought more highly of the tour.

Fun and Informative

My husband and I highly recommend the tour with Izu. Izu knew the area and the history that made it famous. She was a tiny bundly of energy and enthusiam. Her colleague Pam presented a glimpse into her home as well as her political leanings. I was a little hesitant when I booked the tour but it was worth it, no matter what your age. It is a window into the 60's and 70's.

Izu, the walk leader, is a doll! Very knowledgeable, lots of first-hand experience with the hippie days! She knew everyone and everything from 1967 up. Good info on architecture, what happened where, whose house, etc. She also was able to establish a great group atmosphere very quickly - and our group included old folks (OK, 50 year olds), our 14 and 20 year-old kids, other families with same age children, some couples without kids, and some international visitors. She gave good advice on shopping and eating, too - we stayed to eat afterwards in Haight and the kids did the thrift shops all afternoon. We highly recommend this tour - fun and interesting !

Flower Power Tour a Blooming Blast!!

My husband and I loved the Flower Power walking tour of Haight Ashbury, and we adored the tour guide (not sure of the spelling of her name) Iszu. She was very, very entertaining and knowledgable about the area and the era. The tour is a very easy walk and features lots of great information about the architectural history of the area as well as stories about the famous personalities who lived there. There are many photo opportunities and a visit to a B&B/museum with loads of ephemera about the 60s in Haight Ashbury. This tour was definitely the highlight of our recent trip to San Francisco, and we recommend it to Baby Boomers especially, but on our tour there were adolescents who enjoyed it as much or more than we did!

Izu Will Please You!!

Izu was my guide. It was great to get a sense of the feel and vibe of the neighborhood during the Summer of Love and the subsequent years from someone who was there and experiencing it firsthand. Personally, I enjoyed the more political topics - the Diggers, the protests, the drive to create an egalitarian community. Overall, I left the tour feeling satisfied, more connected to the neighborhood, and as if I had bonded with Izu and the other people on the tour. She had a way that made us all feel comfortable and like a group of friends on an informative walk.

We loved this tour because it was fun and gave us an insight into Haight Ashbury life we would not have had otherwise. The guide was a real character - a Haight Ashbury resident for decades, she had been to Woodstock and was personal friends with the Grateful Dead!

The tour guide was extremely knowledgable about the area and its history. She made the tour even more interesting by adding her own personal experiences to the general history of the area. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who has an interest in the 60s music scene in San Francisco.

A Fantastic Tour!

My family and I recently travelled to San Francisco from New York, and decided, because of my fascination with Haight Ashbury, to sign up for the Flower Power Walk. It was, in my opinion, the best part of my trip. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone, even those who, like my sister, didn't have a particular interest in the hippie culture; I guarantee you will leave the tour with a newfound interest. The tour guide, Izu, is one of the most flamboyant, interesting woman I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her knowledge of the area, and the history of what once was a haven for hippies is astounding. Not only do you get the chance to learn all about its history, but you have a great time.

I had been to San Fran three times before so I was looking for something different to do when I found this tour on a website. If you are at all familiar with Haight-Ashbury, hippies, Grateful Dead, and the Summer of Love, this is a fantastic tour to take. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. The tour guide was great and very informative.

Second Time is a Charm

I originally took the tour with my wife in summer of 2004. I took the tour again a week ago with my 19 year old daughter, who has always been interested in the 'summer of love'. Please take from this review that: THE TOUR GUIDE MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD!!!! Originally our tour guide (I won't mention any names, but her initials are Pam) was interesting enough. The down side of the tour with Pam was that everything ( I do mean everything ) in the tour had a political slant to it. It was very obvious from the beginning of the tour and it only worsened as the tour went on. I guess that tour would have been okay to someone with the same political views and agendas as the tour guide. Enter Susan.......the second tour was much better because our guide never once mentioned her political views or opinions and concentrated more on the guests of the tour. She made everyone in our group feel welcome and she appeared very genuine in her interest. It was easy to see that Susan LOVED her role. She was very well known in 'the haight' . She was called by name among residents and shop owners alike. Everyone in our group enjoyed the tour. I only wish was that my wife could have been on the second tour also to see how much difference the tour guide made. I truly enjoyed the second tour so much more. It was money well spent. A big thanks to Susan aka Isu (sp?)
