If you're interested in history, then the carriage ride and harbor tour are Charleston must-dos, in my opinion. Both provide entertaining, but very different, glimpses into events that shaped Charleston and the nation.
Website directions to the boat dock could have been a lot clearer (if directions include taking a particular street "to the end" they should at least tell which way they expect you to be going on that street) and the ones to the carriage ride take you to the horse barn, not the parking area.
Once there though, the staff are friendly and the guides are knowledgeable and entertaining.
If you want to have the Charleston "experience" rather than just a visit for shopping and eating, then both of these tours should be on your list. |

When purchasing the cruise we were lead to understand that we would disembark and tour the grounds of Fort Sumner like the other tour boats. Perhaps I misunderstood but, nonetheless, we were really disappointed that we only cruised around the fort. Otherwise the cruise was enjoyable. |

I would highly recommend both tours to any visitor. The only complaint I have is when I reserved these tours the person I spoke with did not tell me the carriage ride was over at 4 P.M. I also would have liked to purchase the tour of a plantation that I was not informed that I could have gotten all 3 tours. I was very disappointed. I hope to visit again & have more time to do all of this. |

We enjoyed the Harbor Tour and the Carriage Tour very much. Both tour guides were very knowledgeable and personable. The Carriage Tour guide even had to wiggle the mules out of a tight spot due to some inconsiderate car drivers... twice! He was professional and pleasant about it. The Harbor Tour guide was also professional and funny - they both provided lots of historical information about the area, and were very pleasant to everyone on the tours - even the kids, which was nice because not all adults take to kids on tours.
The only thing that I didn't care for was the online ticket purchasing. It was easy to access and complete, but it was confusing. Even though we were reserving tickets for both tours (on different days, which is a really nice plus), we had to choose one or the other to register through. Also, we had to pick times online, which was not a problem, but the carriage time was not honored. We ended up having to go on a later tour, which wasn't a problem for us, but was kind of inconvenient because we had planned our day around it. As far as I could tell, it was the only way to do it and get both tours for one price. (We could have done it over the phone, but then we wouldn't have gotten the free parking, or so it seemed.) Our hotel allowed for printing of the tickets, but it was good to know that if they didn't, we could just write down the ticket number or show the confirmation email on our smart phone instead. This is a nice plus when you don't have printing capabilities.
The arranging of these tours was a little confusing, but the tours themselves were wonderful. They were very educational and allowed us to see a lot of the city. I would definitely recommend them both! |

when i booked the 'combo' for my family of six i (foolishly) believed that meant reserved placement for both tours. we were given a time for the harbour tour (which rocked, BTW) but when it finished and we went to go on the carriage tour we were informed they were SOLD OUT for the day. yes, we got a refund and yes, your fine print does indeed say 'first come, first served' - so i guess you're covered legally - but it's still patent BS marketing to sell a 'combo' and only provide half of it. |

The cruise would have been terrific I am sure but the boat was full on top and on the first floor the fumes were a little more than strong, but after we got underway and some windows were opened it was much better. The person directing the tour was very informative and funny, no problem there. As for the carriage ride it was very cramped, 6 people on a 3-4 seat bench. (2 large people, myself included, 2 other people and 2 children, I'd say it was rather cramped, would have really enjoyed it a bit better had we had room to actually sit straight rather than with my arms crossed so the 2 ladies with the children would have some room. The tour guide was great she did a great job and again very informative. Overall, without all the fuel fumes and not being able to feel my arms from numbness from time to time, it was an okay tour. Thanks and may each of you have a very blessed New Year and pray you have many more. Thanks for the tour anyway.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Darleen
*one of my former students actually worked for Palmetto Carriage years ago his name was J. Glenn, not sure if I should say his name or not, he has turned out to be a pretty smart guy in the Police force. Also the crew on the boat was very friendly and helpful, good crew to go with......................... |

The Harbor Tour was a great way for my family to start our visit to Charleston! The Captain was very knowledgeable but kept the tour interesting with some humor and trivia questions. He pointed out some points of interest that helped us plan the rest of our stay. We also saw some dolphins in the river, which was a big hit with the kids! Parking was close by and FREE!! |

The tour was just the right length of time and I felt it covered a lot of ground in a good amount of time. The boat was clean and the guides were attentive, knowledgeable, and helpful. I would highly recommend this tour for an overview of the Charleston harbor. |
