Cool but Fascinating

It was a long walk but very good excercise (can bring drink but no alcohol). Number one story is about a train inside the tunnel....that still bothering me since that night of that tour. Other stories by different location but right in the area from the start of the tour.

Noise could wake the dead on Ghost Walk.

Some friends came in from out of state for a quick visit and wanted to take a ghost walk during the one night they were in town. The Shadows of Shockoe is "the only game in town." There are six stops on the tour, but only two of the stops are actually located adjacent to where the ghost story takes place (the Poe house and the site of the 1925 train cave in). This was the source of much disappointment among those in attendance. The other major problem is the noise competition. From the ambulance sirens to the medical flight helicopters to the hecklers driving by, the ghost walk leader was interrupted frequently by this noise. Because what she was saying was crucial to the success of the evening, we often had to wait several minutes for the offending noises to stop so that she could continue delivering her messages. Several participants brought digital cameras on the walking tour. As the guide discussed the presence of some ghosts in nearby buildings, participants took photos of the windows and several of those photos show what appears to be the faces of these ghosts. Thanks for your time and attention.

Pretty Good

Good information. Well organized. Would have liked to walk to the places more. Think it was focused on people who don't like to walk that far. Too bad the area isn't great now with lots of loud, obnoxious people driving around. But you can't do much about that. Overall fun and interesting.

The ghost walk is an interesting, informative tour. No ghost were around but we enjoyed the walk.

The tour would be better if actual Ghost hunting was included. Use of EMF dectors and access to a medium would be much more exciting than telling stories....

My husband and I took the tour and both enjoyed the experience. A lot of history and information packed into the tour. I, personally, enjoyed the Poe Museum Enchanted Garden...spectacular in the moonlight. I definately recommend this for anyone from the area who hasn't done it and anyone from out of town that likes history. BUT the tour took us 2+ hours, not the 75 minutes mentioned on the website. Our guide was a bit strange but did a decent job. Also, the hike from the Canal/Dock Street straight up to the Capital should be noted as a bit more than "mildly strenuous uphill walk" - just be prepared and bring a bottle of water. All in all, we had a good time and would recommend this activity.

The Haunts of Richmond Tour was really fun. Afterwards, we took the Widow's House Tour. That was fun also. Only one little problem. It was hard to navigate the rooms. You didn't know how far to go until it was too late.

I have lived in Richmond for most of my life and have wanted to take the walking ghost tour since Haunts of Richmond started theirs. I was not disappointed! It is a great mix of the history of the city with some creepy stories thrown in. The guide was very personable and humorous and willing to answer questions, which is always a good quality in a tour guide.

Lots of historical facts to be learned along with a touch of the ghostly side. Oh and lots and lots of exercise. I learned a lot of the city's history, saw sights I hadn't seen before and heard the ghostly tales that surround some of the buildings in Richmond. It's a fun tour but not a good trip for small children or pets because there is a lot of walking up and down hills. The tour guide was interesting and took care to make sure the group was together with no stragglers getting lost or grabbed by a ghost.

A lot of history, a lot of fun
Sat, Jun 16, 07   9:00 PM tess_marie Female 20-29 Local Group of Friends
It was really good. I think a lot of it was stuff we already knew from the Ghosts of Virginia books, but we definitely learned a few things we didn't know about. Also, walking around Capitol Hill was amazing, because it's so beautiful and creepy there at night, and I had no idea it was open so late. The kicker was being able to go inside the gate of Monumental Church; that's supposed to be one of the most haunted places in town.

It was okay.

The tour was "okay." It could have been better. The tour guide/story teller, although very historically informative, did not present the stories with a scary undertone. I guess it was because of the atmosphere (traffic and drunkards). It would have been really nice if she told the same stories inside of the buildings of which they are associated with, as well as change the tone in her voice to "build" the story. That would have been a bit more interesting and spooky. I would only recommend this tour for its historical rhetoric.

We both enjoyed the "widow's mansion". It kind of creeped both of us out at times. Liked how the rooms were based on "real ghost stories". Would like to do it again when you change it up. The walk was neat as well, a fun way to learn some history.
