Excellent guide, but not so excellent crowd
Fri, Oct 26, 07   7:30 PM jesslrob Male 20-29 Local Family Without Children
Our tour guide was fantastic. She was totally funny and entertaining and a had a huge knowledge of Richmond history. We loved her. The problem was our company on the tour... We went on a 7:30PM tour, and it was overloaded with noisy kids, who were constantly yelling and interrupting the tour guide, as well as two large wet dogs. I love kids, but I think the tours should be split into adult tours and family tours, because people of different ages definitely have different attention spans. Given the choice to go again, I would go at 9:00PM instead of 7:30PM, to end up with a more adult crowd. Also, I don't think big wet dogs should be allowed on the tour. Leave the big wet dogs at home, people. As much as they love to walk, they don't care about Richmond history. Walk your big wet dogs, THEN go on the tour. Just my opinion.

Comparison to New Orleans Haunted Tour
Thu, Oct 25, 07   9:00 PM noaccount Male 50-59 Local Individual
The week following my Richmond ghost tour I took a New Orleans French Quarter haunted history tour on the night before Halloween. The New Orleans tour was longer and about the same price, but the Richmond tour leader was a better, more serious story teller. My favorite ghost tour was in Las Vegas where the tour involved a short entertaining stage show and then a bus tour around Las Vegas to visit the few haunted sites available in the young city. The tour was conducted by a licensed undertaker and comedian and his stories were fantastic. It was well worth paying twice as much for the Vegas tour than was charged for the Richmond or New Orleans tours. Ernest A. Bachman Gum Spring, VA

Haunts of Richmond

The tour guide was great she was very up beat and added a little something extra to the stories. However, we were hoping for something a little more “real”. I think if we had been able to go into the various buildings or if we had the opportunity to look around on our own, if only for a few minutes, it would have had more of a Halloween feel. As for the haunted house, just a tiny bit of light would have been nice. I know they were going for the ambience but you could not even see if someone in your group was right in front of you or if they had moved and because we did not know how we supposed to move through the house it made more annoying then scary. In addition, because we had no idea what was expected of us as far as navigating the house our timing was off and we would miss the beginning of the next story. The Actors were great however; it was hard to hear some of them above the recordings. Overall, our experience was okay but not really worth fifty dollars.

Learned Richmond Stories

I went on a double date to this. I am from Richmond & have always lived here. The tour was good. It would have been better had there been MORE stories. A few people were expecting it to be "haunted" like people jump out and scare you... I wasn't expecting that lol. I learned a few things & saw a few things I was u naware of... I was disappointed they didn't even touch on the "lady in grey" which is a HUGE part of Richmond history & why Richmond burned during the Civil war... she's still around they say. I just think that for $70 & change for 4 people there should have been more... or light refreshments or a water cooler or something else... or an offered "haunted house" in the building we all met at. But it wasn't bad.

Great Fun and educational too!

First, the staff was very very accommodating and nice! The tour was informative. We learned a lot about Richmond's history that was new despite having been residents for almost 20 years! It was appropriate for children, our 9 year old had fun and wasn't scared at all.

It was a great history lesson....not really as scary as I'd like though. It was interesting to hear the history of Richmond though.

Great history, not a lot of scare

Overall my wife and I enjoyed the tour. It was a lot of walking, but on a nice night in Shockoe Bottom, it wasn't a big deal. The tour guide was very knowledgable about the history of the stories he told and was a good speaker. The tour was not very scary but if you enjoy the history of the stories and the old buildings than the tour is enjoyable. The other guests on the tour were the worst part. About half the other guests joked about the tour guide and the tour for most of the time. If the mocking guests were removed I would vote the tour with 5 stars.

Great Scare and Historical Entertainment

The ghost tour was perfect for our group whihc included local Richmonders and family from Washington DC. Some in the group are related to Sarah Elmira Royster (she was a very distant great...great grandmother) so the focus on Poe and his past really hit home for the group. Great walking tour and ending the night with the stage event really set-off the evening. We recommend it to anybody who loves an old fashion scare with bit of southern history thrown in.

Good historical significance but not enough scary ghost substance. I've taken tours in Old town Alexandria and enjoyed those more because they linked the buildings with more concrete stories.

We all enjoyed the tour. Some had already been on it and others of us were first timers. We got some history and some chills. All in all a fun night.

Shadows of Shockoe Tour A Blast

A group of friends and myself headed down to take the Shadows of Shockoe Walking Ghost Tour on Thursday, October 18, 2007@ 9:00 PM. All of us enjoyed the tour a great deal, even though a few of us has previously taken the tour (which was much different this time around). I would recommend this event to anyone looking for an enjoyable evening.

Thoroughly enjoyed learning local history!

Marcia (I think that's her name!) was very enthusiastic and seemed to know lots of details about places and people we would otherwise probably not have known. She let us ask plenty of questions and gave fully detailed answers. It was a very enjoyable evening. Make sure you get there on time, as the group gets started right away; we were about five minutes late and missed out on the first stop, but our tourguide waited for us as soon as she knew we were on our way. P.S. Our group consisted of my husband and I, our college daughter and two of her friends and our 14-year son. We all enjoyed the walk and found lots to talk about afterwards!
