Interesting but a little long

The tour is a very interesting look at some of the history of downtown Richmond. It is not very creepy or scary so dont go expecting to be frightened. Make sure to where comfortable walking shoes as you will walk about 2.5 miles, a lot of it uphill. The tour guide was pretty knowledgeable but in my opinion let her interest in the paranormal get in the way. Dont expect much from the Edgar Allen Poe aspect. All around it was an okay experience.

Historical info good/less emphasis on ghosts

Our family enjoyed the historical info on this tour and would have liked more of it. It is interesting to see Richmond on a night walking tour as we would never do this alone. The children ranged from 14 down to age 6. They all felt there was too much to-do about "ghosts" etc. We enjoyed walking around the governor's mansion and capitol building. Our guide did not wear the widely-mentioned "white robe" and I was glad of that. I wish he had shared much more information about Edgar Allan Poe and other historical figures. There was plenty of opportunity to share additional info while the slower walkers caught up. I don't regret doing it as it was interesting. But, I won't be doing another "ghost" walk for a long time.

Not scary, not fun, not good!

The tour and the advertisement for the tour was very misleading, non-interactive and boring. Will not reccommend to any other individuals or groups.

I wasn't sure what I had gotten myself into but as it turned out, this ghost tour was really alot of fun! There is so much history to Richmond and this tour can really only touch the surface. Our guide, Marcia, was very energetic, personable and thorough with the stories she told us. In between stops there was a great deal of walking, even hiking up steep inclines and hills, but she was very patient and tried to stop occasionally to give everyone a breather as well as a preview of the next stop to come. Thank goodness it was not too terribly hot! We were encouraged to ask questions along the way and take pictures with our digital cameras whenever we wanted. And there were some moments when certain cameras wouldn't work! All in all, we were treated to a 2 hour tour in which we learned a great deal about haunted Richmond and got some great exercise to boot! Thanks Marcia!

Pretty Good

Our guide was great. I forgot her name (So Sorry) She had a lot of energy, enthusasm as well as information. Which she presented it with out a lot of the fake theatrics. I would have liked to hear a little bit more on the history of the area but it is a long walk and fast pace so I understand it is hard to get it all in. Just know that it is a long ghost walk, ours lasting almost two hours. There are lots of hills and it can be almost too much if it is very hot like it was for us.( Mid July) I would highly recommend the walk to most people keeping in mind the length and hills. Ghost walks are a great way to learn about the area you are visiting. This one ranking 2nd in the ones I have been on.

Disappointed

Having recently moved to Richmond, I was quite excited about participating in a ghost tour of the city. I have previously participated in ghost tours of Charleston, SC and Nashville, TN and thoroughly enjoyed both tours. Consequently, I had high hopes for this tour. I had read prior to the tour that I should be prepared to be heckled by local residents. I couldn't understand why until I showed up for the tour. The guide was wearing a long white cape, emblazoned with Richmond Ghost Tour on the back. This tour takes place on a Saturday night and winds its way through Shockhoe Bottom, which is a big place for night life in Richmond. Consequently, in addition to the fact that the cape is hokey, it drew a considerable amount of unnecessary and unwanted attention to our group. In addition, given Richmond's racial tensions and history, I have to wonder how wise it is for a group of white folks to go around the city led by a man wearing what looks like the makings of a Klan costume. I really felt quite uncomfortable. As compared to my previous experiences on ghost tours, the stories related by our guide were not compelling. Most of the stories, in some way or another, related back to Edgar Allen Poe. Poe, while macabre and interesting in his own way, was not the subject of the tour. Ghosts - paranormal activities - were the subject of the tour. Finally, I should mention that the tour guide had complete disregard for traffic laws. At one point, he had us walking against traffic down a one-way street IN A LANE OF TRAFFIC. In fact, a Richmond police officer stopped to say something to us. There are plenty of sidewalks in Richmond, so I am sure that it would be possible to reconfigure the tour so that the groups don't have to endanger themselves or inconvenience others.

Fun and Entertaining Insiders View

We felt the tour gave us a sense of history and an insider's perspective on events that helped create some of Richmond's history. The presentation was told in a serious enough way that you had could believe in the possibility of the haunting nature -- yet at the same time felt the reality of some of the tragic events. The walking was a great way to take in these sights and the stories told provided details that truly helped tell the story.

Heavy on the supernatural
Fri, Jun 20, 08   9:00 PM scottklinger Male 40-49 Domestic Tourist(s) Individual
Other ghost tours I have taken balance the supernatural with some local history -- this had little of the latter. If you are into mysterious faces in the window, and pictures of orbs, this tour will satisfy you. If you are hoping to learn a little about Richmond, you will be disappointed. The tour was also heavily focused on stories from the white community, the guide was able to offer little of stories from Richmond's African-American or Native American communities.

Wish I lived closer so I could go AGAIN!!
Sat, Jun 14, 08   9:00 PM atheinert Female 20-29 Domestic Tourist(s) Family Without Children
The ghost walk was essentially the only tourist thing we got to do during our visit to Richmond, and I'm so glad we decided to go. It was spooky and fun, and also helped us to learn some history about Richmond we would have never gotten in the history books. Our tour guide was great, and a 75 minute tour soon turned into 2 hours and 20 minutes. However, we had a wonderful time, and I did see something shadowy in one of the windows at one stop. I do wish the downtown area was better policed, as the scariest part of our tour was walking back to our car. I LOVED IT!! As my first ghost tour, I am now interested in trying to find some in my own home state. Thanks again for a wonderful evening!!
