Disappointed

First off, my experience might not be representative because I was the only visitor on the tour that day. Other reviewers mentioned two tour guides and talking to people from the community. The only people who I talked to were my guide, Rabbi Epstein, and a friendly man at the library who kept me company until the rabbi arrived (late!). I think meeting others and chatting with them would have made the tour much better. I would have appreciated to start off with a quick overview of the structure of the tour. We stayed in the library for a while (longer than I expect from a walking tour) and the rabbi explained a little about the faith and answered questions. Then he took me to the synagogue (looked inside through a two-way mirror) and the museum, showed me places where torahs are restored, teffilin are made, and the matzoh bakery. I felt a little rushed from one place to the next; I didn't find out where we were going until we arrived and didn't get to see much of the neighboorhood itself. We did hardly any walking. The people working in the places we visited ignored us, which made me feel not welcome and uncomfortable asking questions and taking pictures. Maybe it was because I am a woman and most of them were men. I asked about this in the beginning of the tour but didn't understand the rabbi's answer (too abstract). The last stop was lunch, which was not at the regular Deli I think (they didn't serve the meals mentioned in the FAQs). I had a tuna sandwich that wasn't very remarkable. Although part of the tour description, there were no stops at (or mentioning of) other eateries and merchants.

A memorable trip--I'm still thinking about it

I was very impressed with the depth of explanations. Both our guides really wanted us to fully understand the beliefs behind the observances. They were open to questions and did everything to make us comfortable. And the range of things we saw was quite wonderful--I especially loved seeing the scribes and the museum of manuscripts. I felt I had traveled to another part of the world and learned a great deal. I recommend the tour very highly.

Lubaviches behind the scenes

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour which was run by two Rabbis. I had the opportunity to meet a number of other people including some other Rabbis. The tour was excellent, giving one a behind the scenes tour of life in the Brooklyn Shtetl. I thoroughly recommend the tour to anyone who wants to know about our Jewish roots and who wishes to understand and get to know the Jews of Brooklyn. I especially enjoyed the busy Synagogue, the Rebbe Museum, the Mikvah tour and the Shmoor Matza factory.

Really enjoyed the rich source of information and knowledgeable answers to questions. This is not an outside tour about the jews but an inside tour led by members of the community itself. It was a very rich cultural experience. The time invested in the tour was time well spent.

We both enjoyed the tour which we found very interesting, and which enabled us to learn more about the Hassidic way of life. We will recommend the tour to friends and family planning to visit New York.

Fascinating experience

The tour was fascinating, informative and provided plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Everybody I encountered were open, friendly and welcoming. I learned so much about the Chassidic way of life and it has remained a constant talking point since my return to the UK. It has left me eager to find out more. The only disappointment was that I was unable to view the Torah being scribed as there was not enough room in the building for our group.

Absorbing

I found myself being the sole member of the tour for the day so had a one-on-one tour with Esther and her darling 9-month-old son once we left Rabbi Epstein's introduction to the Hassidic community. I found the tour fascinating and stimulating. So many highlights but the top ones were learning about and gaining an understanding of Hassidic Judaism, visiting the synagogue, scribe, and the motzo factory. The time went so fast! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wishing to understand better our Hassidic neighbors and community. The warmth and kindness extended were the "icing on the cake".

We visited the Jewish Tour in Brooklyn last week and we experienced a very detailled look into the world of jewish people. It was amazing how friendly and helpful everybody was. All people we visited were open to give us as much information as we asked for. Our guide was increadible. He had an endless knowledge about his culture and he has the wonderful ability to include all of the perticipants with his presentation. We realized that it wasn't only his "job" he did but he guided us because he loves to show Jewish culture to other people no matter where they from. We learnt so much during these 5 hours and we wish to thank him for his effort!! All the best from Germany Anja and Sebastian

The Rabbi provided extensive commentary on all of the areas that we visited. Most noteworthy was his openness to questions of all types. We gained much insight into the Jewish culture and religeon. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone going to NY.

The tour was very interesting. We were only a small group. The two guides spent a lot of time with us (more then four hours); they tried to answer all questions. If you want to see something very different we can recommend it. Off course you have to be interested - otherwise it gets boring. The Hassidic Jews in Crown Heights are obviously not as orthodox as the Hassidic Jews in Williamsburg. We never really understood the differences. We would have liked to hear more about that.

Very instructive experience.

The tour shows the way of life of this community in a very practical way; besides, you get to know some of the most important places for the whole Hasidic Judaism, as for example the Chabad Library and 770. The tour guides were excellent, and one of them, Rabbi Kaplan, didn't hesitate to stay some hours more in order to answer all our questions. If you want to learn more about Jewish tradition, this is definitely an opportunity that you cannot let pass.

Educational Experience
Sun, Dec 28, 08   10:00 AM NicolaM Female 40-49 Local Individual
I found this tour to very interesting and it was a wonderful educational experience. I learnt so much about religion, theology, history, culture, society, language etc. etc. I really appreciated the knowledge and learning of the rabbi who led the tour. What really made this tour outstanding for me was the attitude of the tour leader, in particular his efforts to answer all questions as comprehensively as possible.
