One of the best things we did in NYC!

| We didn't have time to see a lot of NYC on our first trip there, other than the usual "gotta see" things. We chose the Chassidic Walking Tour as one of the atypical touristy things to find time for. What a find and what a pleasure the 3+ hours was! There wasn't a question that was off-limits and we were given inside looks into the culture, synagogue (with services in progress), an art gallery, the extensive/valuable/historical document library, saw the scribes and artisans at work, AND enjoyed a wonderful lunch. It was very educational; the background info before we even started the tour was very beneficial. I think it will be one of the things I remember and recommend the most to others going to NYC. Thank you for opening your culture and neighborhood to outsiders. | ||||||

| We usually visit New York City twice a year. This trip we found the JewishTours brochure at our hotel and immediately phoned to make a reservation, as it sounded both interesting and educational. Rabbis Epstein and Kaplan were friendly, informative, anxious to share their views, and able to answer our questions. They really fill the three hours with wonderful and interesting things to see as well as explanations of the Lubavitch neighborhood and customs in Crown Heights. | ||||||

| A fascinating peek into a Brooklyn the average tourist doesn't see. Our tour guides were warm, gracious and, of course, very knowledgeable regarding the subject matter. No question asked by the tour group seemed to faze them. | ||||||

| The leaders of the group were excellent. They provided a lot of information, and were willing to answer any question, no matter how simplistic. My husband and I, even though we are Jewish, learned much from the interchanges. We travel a lot, and one of the activities we really enjoy is going to peoples' homes, and interacting with locals. This might be an interesting and worthwhile addition to your tours. Anyway, thank you for a fascinating couple of hours. | ||||||

| My son and I felt we had been given a special opportunity to talk with, view and understand what can seem a mystical, unapproachable community. We came away with a broader view of the culture, and a sense of spiritual enlightment as well. We highly recommend this tour for anyone who as ever been interested in this group of people. Bring your questions. The guide responds warmly and openly. | ||||||

| We found the tour to be very helpful in beginning an understanding of the area and the people. The tour guide was quite forthcoming in answering questions and set everyone at ease swiftly. We're glad we decided on this unusual tour. We lived in NY for several decades in the past and wish that we had taken the tour then. | ||||||

| The Rabbi did an excellent job of informing and getting everyone involved. The artifacts, craftsmen, and museum were all very impressive. The Rabbi did an excellent job of putting things in context and explaining about the role of the late Rebbe in leading the community in interpretation. And, last but certainly not least, the lunch was delicious! Unfortunately, two of the ten people in our group had another agenda - to save the Rabbi's soul to get him to accept that Jesus is the Messiah. Obviously, that wasn't going to happen. The Rabbi handled them rather skillfully, but nothing short of clamping muzzles on them would stop these two from monopolizing the floor-time of the tour. I still highly recommend going. However, I think some explicit ground rules should be established limited the number of questions that any one member of the group can ask. | ||||||

| Rabbi Epstein is very charming, very open about Chassidic life and was very interesting as well. You get a glimpse of a culture that is not very well understood, even by other Jewish people, myself included. I would highly recommend this tour. | ||||||

| Even though the guide was enthusiasitc and had good knowledge, the tour was limited to very few destinations. The website gives the impression that it is a 3 hour walking tour; whereas, the walking part does not exceed an hour. Also, the tour guide had a hidden agenda (i.e. make Lubavitchs look like a great group of people) and his main goal for the tour does not align with those of the visitors who would like to see Crown Heights in more detail. | ||||||

| Sometimes google searches throw up more than trash and nonsense. This was a wellspent half-day tour into a New York few international tourists will get to see. We probably all know the "Big Bagel" is the largest Jewish city on the planet but Rabbi Epstein gives a unique insight into Chassidic and Lubavitcher life - as Scots and Catholics raised on the likes of Bashevis SInger, Chaim Potok and other great writers we were interested to get a glimpse of everyday activity among the successors of the Baal Shem Tov and visit this "Vatican" of the Orthodox. Rabbi Epstein is a warm, humourous, kind and obviously well-schooled and spiritual man who vibrates his faith and communicates it animatedly and informatively to others. And this is not like an encounter with some nutty evangelical group - the Lubavitcher have no real interest in converting Christians (would that all Christians would reciprocate and respect the faith of the Chosen People!) - but are people of faith who recognise that others also find their own way to God. We took in firstly the weird and wonderful sights of Crown Heights, the mystic mayhem of the rabbinical college and its shul, some interesting local activities including watching the manufacture of tefillin and the repairing of Torahs from round the globe. As we but the day before had been showing our children illuminated manuscripts at the Met this was a special moment and a step back in time - perhaps more accurately a step out of time. We finished off with a simple deli lunch - better informed, uplifted and glad to have met the irrepressible Rabbi from Chattanooga on whom the Lord most surely has shone His face. If a quick zip round a gallery or 5 minutes is the extent of your attention span this may not be the trip for you ( allow 1hr 15 mins each way by subway from Midtown Manhattan) but if, like us, you wanted a more offbeat New York tour that will stay with you for some time give Chassidic Discovery a go - we were glad we did! | ||||||

| as we were only for two days in NY, I was not sure than taking the tour was the best choice, but it turned out to be my best time there. As a christian (with no jewish background), i've always thoughts all our roots are in the Jewish faith and tradition, and most of us are missing so much to ignore them. The openess of the tour, the friendly atmosphere allow anyone to learn a lot, dig deeper into one's faith roots, widen the understanding of the Scriptures. I think every christian with an open mind would draw huge benefits from taking the tour, learning and just listening. What really struck me after the tour was this quiet feeling of peace and joy that our two guides were able to communicate to me. A big thank you to both of them for this heart experience, and sharing with me so much Anne Georges (France) | ||||||
