Excellent Intro to Hassidic Life in NY
Mon, Aug 17  10:00 AM yoshore Male 60-69 Local Individual
I am a secular Jew and knew very little about the Chabad Lubavitch movement. I took this tour by myself, with 2 other couples in the group. The rabbi's that took us around and talked about the history and daily life of the community were very helpful, friendly and open to questions from all of us on the tour - Jewish and Christian. There were other members of the community we met along the way. All were extremely friendly and outgoing toward us. This really impressed me - I was very surprised at how welcome I was made to feel in the synagogue and on the street. I came away with a totally new respect for the Lubavitch movement. I have begun more research on my own and have already recommended this tour to several friends, Jews and non-Jews.

The tour helps one understand the culture and lifestile of the Lubavitch Hassids. The information provided touches upon the history, values and customs of the community. The guide was very friendly , knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Tours like this promote tolerance and understanding. The little lunch was simple but the food was delicious and healthy. Thank you!

This tour was recommended to me by a family member, who was extremely enthusiastic about it's content and guides. After taking the tour myself, I agree completely, and encourage anyone interested in knowing about ways of living one's religion and learning about being happy in one's life choices, to join this tour. No question to either of the guides was off limits and I felt as if the community was unselfishly sharing itself with me. Thank you.

My background is Reform, so I wasn't exactly sure as to what to expect with the Hassidic movement. I was surprised cameras were allowed; but, also happy, as I used to be a photographer. To have an Israeli assist me in putting on tefillin and praying the Shema was an experience I won't soon forget. Although, I had done this one other time in Israel at the Western Wall, the process was somewhat rushed. Omer (as I recall was the young man's name in Brooklyn), was extremely patient with me and helped me along the way.. I was also very interested and amazed in the restoration of Torah's. This is a very tedious, time consuming, and exact art. Everyone was extremely professional and friendly. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn more of the Hassidic movement. You will be glad you did. Rabbis Epstein and Kaplan were very gracious to invite us in their daily lives.

Answered questions that I had about the traditions and beliefs of the Jewish group. Increased understanding of the reasons for traditions and daily activities. Immersion in the local community was very helpful. The attitude of the guide was very conducive to questions.

Rabbi Epstein is very charming, very open about Chassidic life and was very interesting as well. You get a glimpse of a culture that is not very well understood, even by other Jewish people, myself included. I would highly recommend this tour.

The Chassidic Walking Tour was the best and most interesting thing we did on our eight day trip to NYC. Both Rabbi Epstein and Rabbi Yisroel Ber Kaplan were most gracious and spent considerable time with our small group of just two couples. Both Rabbi's did a wonderful job of answering our questions and showing us around the Lubavitch area in Crown Heights. Would highly recommend this tour to both Jewish and non Jewish (ourselves) alike.

Worship Please inform guests before taking them into worship services what exactly you will be doing and what to expect. Children really need to be forewarned about what to expect. Thank you, Steven M. Wilson

And Now For Something Completely Different...
Sun, Apr 19  10:00 AM sooke54 Male 50-59 International Tourist(s) Family Without Children
If you ever wondered, as a tourist coming to NYC , about the bearded men with black coats and fedora hats you encounter on the streets, then this is the tour for you. The Lubavitch Chassidic Community in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights have a tour that attempts to explain their philosophy of life, and have a look at their synagogue, yeshiva, and mikveh ( woman's ritual bath). Our guide, Rabbi Kaplan, enthusiastically answered all the questions I had about how they dealt with homosexuality, the theory of evolution, and the Middle East. I wished I had learned more about the ongoing tensions between his group and the rest of (mostly black) Crown Heights, but there only so much to fit in during the 3 1/2 hours. Our Sunday group contained five people and the price included lunch at a local deli. I thought the tour was an excellent value for the money.
